Celebrate this Leap Year/ Leap Day 2024 with this fun Leap Year activity designed for middle or high school students. This activity is ideal for ELA/ English, Science, or History classrooms. Ultimately, this lesson is for YOUR STUDENTS if you want them to learn the science and history of Leap Year while also making meaningful connections to their own lives. During this lesson, students watch two short and engaging video clips that teach students why we have a leap year every four years. Students answer 12 discussion questions that challenge them to think about the importance of Leap Day while also reflecting on what would happen in our society if we did not observe Leap Year every four years, as in no more February 29th. :) Your students will enjoy this Leap Year activity because there are an equal amount of science questions as there are history and English questions. The lesson is designed in this way so that it is fun and engaging for EVERY type of learner. Within the discussion questions are fun questions that will cultivate meaningful classroom discussion time and high student engagement. For instance, students are asked to think creatively by considering what they would do if their birthday was on a Leap day: Celebrate on February 28th or March 1st? Students are also asked to create 4 predictions about where they think they will be on the next Leap Year in 2028. My students particularly had fun with these questions because they enjoyed thinking creatively and sharing their responses with the class. This lesson will take about 30-40 minutes to complete. What is included: A digital Google Document assignment A printable packet version of the assignment A detailed suggested answer key to support YOU A grading rubric for seamless grading

This is a set of English alphabet illustrations celebrating different people children may meet and learn from as they grow up. Perfect to hang in the nursery, child care center or daycare classroom, frame in a child's room, and use to teach kids the alphabet and about different people and jobs. A diverse range of people and types of work are represented. This is 27 individual 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch (14 x 14cm) images printed on heavy stock semigloss paper, reproduced from my original colored pencil and ink drawings. You can hang this wall art in any formation you'd like - in a line across the room, a grid, etc. ................................................................................................................ I made this ABC series of drawings a few years ago for a friend who was expecting her first baby. I envisioned a world in which her boy would get to meet people of all races, genders and abilities doing different meaningful work, where everyone was respected and treated well. My hope for the youngest generation is to grow up and be able to value the connections between all of us, to help everyone reach their full potential, and to be a part of a society where everyone fits in to the whole together – where the people you may meet mean something to you. People You May Meet is about identity, hope and human connection. Systemic racism impacts each of our identities, hopes and connections. So, after I cover the cost to print and ship these ABCs, I will donate all of the proceeds to Color of Change. (colorofchange.org) Color of Change helps people respond effectively to injustice in the world around us. As a national online force driven by over one million members, they move decision-makers in corporations and government to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people in America. By designing strategies powerful enough to fight racism and injustice—in politics and culture, in the work place and the economy, in criminal justice and community life —they are changing both the written and unwritten rules of society. They mobilize to end practices and systems that unfairly hold Black people back, and champion solutions that move us all forward. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Description of Activity #1: Hexagonal Autobiography Activity Students create their own hexagonal "identity maps" that represent different aspects of their personal identity. Students incorporate images, symbols, and keywords that reflect their interests, hobbies, values, and aspirations. After completing their individual hexagonal maps students participate in a class discussion to share and appreciate the diverse identities within the class. Following the class discussion, students collaborate to create a large hexagonal display showcasing both the unique identities and commonalities shared among the students. Display the large hexagonal cluster on a classroom wall. WHAT’S INCLUDED Detailed Lesson Plans (2 Student-Centered Activities & 3 Social Studies-Themed Activities) Blank templates (Slides 5 -7) Student-Centered Templates (Slides 8-11) Social Studies-themed Templates (Slides 10-12) Completed Samples (Slides 13 - 15) What is “Hexagonal Thinking” and how does it work? Hexagonal Thinking is a visual tool to help students make connections & organize ideas on a topic. To create your Hexagonal cluster, select a hexagonal card to use as your starting point. Build your cluster by moving cards together, making sure each side that touches another card has a “connection” to the cards it touches. For example, students with similar interests would place their hexagons next to one another, and so on. Every cluster will look a little different. That is okay!
Empower your students as they reimagine the world around them through mathematics Culturally relevant mathematics teaching engages students by helping them learn and understand math more deeply, and make connections to themselves, their communities, and the world around them. The mathematics task provides opportunities for a direct pathway to this goal. But many teachers ask, how can you find, adapt, and implement math tasks that build powerful learners? Engaging in Culturally Relevant Math Tasks helps teachers to design and refine inspiring mathematics learning experiences driven by the kind of high-quality and culturally relevant mathematics tasks that connect students to their world. With the goal of inspiring all students to see themselves as doers of mathematics, this book provides intensive, in-the-moment guidance and practical classroom tools that empower educators to shape culturally relevant experiences while systematically building tasks that are standards-based. It includes A pathway for moving through the process of asking, imagining, planning, creating, and improving culturally relevant math tasks. Tools and strategies for designing culturally relevant math tasks that preservice, novice, and veteran teachers can use to grow their practice day by day. Research-based teaching practices seen through the lens of culturally relevant instruction that help students develop deep conceptual understanding, procedural knowledge, fluency, and application in 6-12 mathematical content. Examples, milestones, opportunities for reflection, and discussion questions guide educators to strengthen their classroom practices, and to reimagine math instruction in response. This book is for any educator who wants to teach mathematics in a more authentic, inclusive, and meaningful way, and it is especially beneficial for teachers whose students are culturally different from them.

My husband and I had left the church where we had gone for years and I wasn’t feeling connected in our new one. That changed overnight when we joined a Life Group, and I am so thankful!
