Are you at the time of year when you and your students could really use a laugh? You cannot read this book and keep from cracking up! I love Gary Soto's sense of humor and the great thing about this book is that even first and second graders can "get" the funny parts. This book provides a great entry to talking about minimal pairs (pares mínimos) with your students. Minimal pairs are pairs of words which differ in only one phonological element and have distinct meanings. In El viejo y su puerta, the old man is not very good at listening to his wife so when she asks him to not forget to bring the puerCa to the barbacoa, he mistakenly hears puerTa. The old man is a bit confused but the door proves useful en route to the party and there is plenty of food to eat thanks to the friends he makes along the way. The book begins with this explanation: En México hay una cancioncita que dice “La puerta. La puerca. Al viejo lo mismo le da.” Eso es porque a un viejo las dos palabras le suenan muy parecidas – sobre todo si no escucha con atención. Así es que sean jóvenes o viejos, escuchen atentamente porque si no, ¡se pueden meter en un lío! After you read and enjoy the book, you can have a discussion about minimal pairs and the importance of careful listening using these cards (you can download them for free over at Teachers Pay Teachers): You can represent the sounds in the words with magnetic letters or by simply writing the letters in the sound boxes. It is really important to help our students understand minimal pairs in Spanish so that we can better help them understand minimal pairs in English. Several years ago, I attended a PASA Conference and heard Dr. Elena Izquierdo talk about why our students struggle with English words like "meat" and "mitt". She said we really need to do a lot more work in the younger grades to train their ears to distinguish the differences. What do you think? Do you have a favorite way to train those little ears?
Spanish Alphabet Sentences are a perfect way to teach the Spanish Alphabet letter name and sounds, alliteration, vocabulary, print awareness (spacing between words), punctuation (a period goes at the end of a sentence, capitalization (The first letter of a sentence is capitalized), vocabulary, and letter recognition. There are so many ways to use these Spanish alphabet sentences. You can use these in small group, whole group (with a projector), cut the sentences up for a center, guided practice, send in your kindergarten homework folder, and even for guided reading. These alphabet sentences will build confidence in your students as they "read" the sentences. They will surely love that I included a picture at the end of each sentence. I also like to use these for letter recognition. In small group I like to read the sentences with the children, place the sheets in dry erase pouches, and have the students search of the letter with a dry erase marker. The ways to use these are endless! If you are a dual language teacher, you can use them in your bilingual learning centers, bilingual centers, bilingual literacy centers, use them with your bilingual pairs, bilingual partners. Last school year, my grade level began chaining for guided reading. This meant I would get access to helping kids improve their literacy in Spanish every day in addition to my own students. I quickly realized that there is a SERIOUS lack of Spanish resources out there and decided to do something about it. This Summer, I began making resources in Spanish to use with the bilingual classes at my school. Rimas Rimas, Rimando Once I finished this awesome (I think so) RHYMING unit in Spanish I got VERY JEALOUS and decided to make the English version right after. Rhyming, Rhymes I got to use it with my class and passed along the Spanish version to my teacher teammate to keep. Here is the outcome. Rimas Rimas I am going to ask kids to trace the words in crayon by coloring the rime in one color and the onset in another. Rhyming Rhyming A lot of these words are found in my class' favorite rhyming song book, A Hunting We Will Go. They love to sing, "A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go, we'll catch a bear and put him in underwear and then we'll let him go. Oh!" They get pretty hysterical with their nonsense rhymes as well. The packs include the same format to a RHYMING memory match game. Rompecabezas para rimar Once printed they are ready to cut and laminate. Memory is one of the class' favorite centers. Rhyming Puzzles The second feature each pack includes are pocket chart cards. Pocket chart cards are new to me as a teaching tool since my district has had Promethean boards for so many years. This is the kind of activity that got relegated to technology and the poor little pocket chart was wheeled to the back of the room. However, I can dust it off now and use these cool pocket chart cards to practice rhyming with my class. Rimas Rhyming pocket chart cards As you can see the onset is in black and the rime is in red. I love the use of color to help out kids who are visual learners SEE THE RHYMING part when they can't hear it to save their lives. Here is the link to each product: SPANISH RHYMING ENGLISH RHYMING
Is your kid having trouble with contractions? Try out this simple memory matching game.

I love our mealworm/darkling beetle unit so much, but there are not a lot of "cute" projects out there for those burrowing larvae and crawling beetles. This craftivity is an engaging project for students to review the stages of the insect life cycle and also create their own cute mealworm bug! This activity comes in English and Spanish and can be differentiated depending on the level of your class. Here's what you get so you can adapt the activity any way you want: -Beetle Body Cutout (in English or Spanish) -Mealworm Life Cycle phases with simple vocabulary in English and Spanish -Mealworm Life Cycle phases with cloze sentences in English and Spanish -Mealworm Life Cycle phases with cloze sentences out of order (students have to paste the stages in the correct order) -Mealworm Life Cycle phases with short answer spaces (students have to describe the different phases and then paste them in order) Students use pipe cleaners for the legs and antennae. The finished product beetle not only is a great review or assessment tool, they are so cute your students will love to read them and share them with others!
