The more I look at Matisse's artwork, the more it really speaks to me. I love his vibrant colors and the way his artwork expresses such movement. Around this time last year, Chuck and I made Matisse Collages from construction paper. We had such fun making them together... that I thought we could take it to the next level... wall murals! Making Matisse Murals with Kids This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support! Yup. We made ourselves Matisse mural. The idea was inspired by this gorgeous kate zaremba wallpaper. (Love, love, loooove!) Here's how we did it! First, Chuck and I grabbed a bunch of paint chips and got cutting. (Two things I've learned recently... 1) Preschoolers LOVE scissors. So Chuck's totally on board anytime cutting is involved. 2) Paint chips are like construction paper... on steroids. They're seriously one of my favorite crafting materials. They come in fabulous, modern colors and they're free! Woot woot! That's why I used them to make a Christmas tree advent calendar and paint chip wall art.) Then, I taped a large piece of white craft paper onto the wall. Then we pulled out our trusty glue sticks, cutout shapes, and circle stickers and began making art! The circle stickers by far were his favorite to stick onto the wall. And we just kept going and going and going! I thought it would be fun to glue on super large googly eyes. While we got gluing, Chuck realized that he could also glue on glue sticks. While they didn't stay stuck for long, he enjoyed the diversion. And then we used washable markers to add finishing touches. (Side note: Thank goodness washable markers really are washable. I left him for just a moment and when I got back there was marker all over the wall too.) I loved how the results turned out, but the best part about this project for me was hearing Chuck say "Look mommy, I'm an artist." Yes you are, Chuck. Yes you are. Second graders are finishing up some really creative drawings set under the ground, so we did a lot of visualizing to come up with our ideas. We looked at some classic book illustrations by Garth Williams of Cricket in Times Square fame and the always classic Beatrix Potter. All of these story animals live in a hidden away, subterranean world and the job of the illustrator is to create that world. We talked about visual textures found in the layers of soil, clay, and rock. Some drawings show a realistic setting for a possible hibernating animal, readying for winter, and others have more of a sense of humor about them, as if the animals lived like people. Hi, friends! I mightah told y'all that we're on a bit of a Rousseau-tiger-y kick at my school these days. If you follow me here, I've shared tons of photos of my young artists tiger-tastic work. Last week I shared the relief sculpture tiger pieces created by my fourth graders. I'll be certain to share all the deets on the other projects as well but for today, I thought I'd start with y'all the biggest hit: The First Grade Henri Rousseau Jungle Mural! A lil back story: we have our school Open House after the first month of school. I try my hardest to have a work of art hung by each student for the occasion. The last couple of years, we've done Dot Day. This year, I decided to opt for a different theme: Henri Rousseau's jungle paintings. I chose this for a couple of reasons. I'm emphasizing that Art is an Adventure and that artists are too! Also, the tigers are our school mascot so it looks fab-o and school-spirit-esque to see them plastered on the walls of our school. Having an over-arching theme for all grade levels really helps me keep my learning targets in line (5 different art lessons is enough! You add 5 different themes/topics/cultures/etc. and my lil mind is blown). So, Rouseau-inspired tigers it was! And first grade totally nailed it. To start, we began the school year by painting and texturing papers. The first grade was allowed to pick from a variety of warm colored pieces of construction paper. They added white, yellow and red to these papers in any way they decided. These were used as the basis for our tiger drawings. To better explain the process, I created a video! This video is in kid-friendly format so feel free to share in your art room with your students. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the video! I created this just for y'all...so please let me know what you like, what you'd like to see more of and if you'd like me to pretty please stop. In case you can't stand the sound of my voice, I've got snaps of the drawing steps. I drew with the children while they sat on the floor with their papers and oil pastels in front of them. We emphasized each element of art as we drew. This was a great way to introduce the elements of art by demonstrating them in our drawings! When using oil pastels, I always emphasize that we are not to wipe the oil pastels as they'll smear. My fave oil pastel brands are Sakura but I do love Gallery's fluorescent oil pastels. That's what's used on the eyes and the nose. So bright and the viscosity is very smooth. We used black last because it can be the most disastrous as far as smearing goes. The kids were really excited to use black as suddenly their drawings came together. I love the sweet personality of each tiger! Once the drawing was done, we used our green painted papers to create leaves for our tigers. These were added either in front or behind our tigers. From there, we added a tail and glued that to the back of our tigers. We used some scrap paper to create the tails. For the tail, we talked about line and the kids drew any kind of line they wanted. Then they created a parallel line to follow the first. Then zigzag stripes were added. Once the tigers were complete, the mural was ready to be created. We spent one 30 minute class painting huge sheets of bulletin board paper green. The kids loved it! They called it a Painting Party and attacked those large sheets of paper with a ton of energy. The following class, we dialed it way down and talked about pattern. I started an organic leafy design on each paper that was green and a star pattern on each paper that was blue. The kids were given small brushes and asked to create a pattern of the original design. The next morning, I got to school about an hour before it started, got super jacked up on coffee and busted that mural out. I laid 12' sheets of paper on the floor, one for each class. I started by gluing down the night sky papers with my high temp glue gun. Then the land papers were added. To finish, I went over each land form in either black or white paint. HOWEVER, once the tigers were added, they completely vanished into the busy background! I was so sad! So I decided to outline each of the tigers in black paint. Again, this took no time because I had injected coffee straight into my eyeballs. Turns out you can run laps around the universe if you do that, who knew?! And, viola! Everyone can improve their drawing skills with Echo Drawing! Drawing is a vital skill in today’s world. Learning to draw helps us become more effective visual communicators at home, at school, and at work. Drawing well does not require having natural talent or artistic ability.… anyone can learn to draw! Drawing is all about looking carefully at things and seeing the relationships between lines and shapes, and gradations of light and dark. We call this "learning to see like an artist". "Echo Drawing" is a name I came up with to describe the “Duplication Exercise" first presented by Mona Brooks in her classic books “Drawing with Children” and “Drawing with Older Children and Teens”. These exercises help to develop observation skills and the ability to translate what we see onto paper. With the help of Echo Drawing, anyone can learn to "see like an artist". Through copying a series of designs from simple to complex, students will begin to see visual details and relationships they previously hadn’t noticed. In the process, they will learn to more carefully observe the world all around them. Included in this 12-page pdf: 1 page explaining why drawing is important and how copying can help us learn. 1 page filled with tips for completing these exercises plus strategies for seeing and drawing. 8 pages of hand-drawn Echo Drawing exercises: 15 exercises per page (2 pages each of levels 1, 2, 3, & 4, with each level increasing in difficulty). 120 unique exercises in all! 1 page of blank Echo Drawing boxes for students to create their own designs to exchange with friends. 1 page of blank Echo Drawing boxes for teachers to create designs for their students, at whatever level their students need. Miss Oetken's scratchtastic Greek Vase with Achilles from Greek Mythology We've moved on in our art history time line to Greek and Roman art and we're concentrating on Black Figure Greek pots and vases! We learned about some of the popular basic shapes of pottery and their functions for what they were used for back in Greek and Roman times. I made two types of hand outs and worksheets for students. One that explained the basic shape of the popular vases we were looking at and another that show different examples of popular patterns found on Greek pottery. I also found the link to this website (http://www.schoolsliaison.org.uk/kids/preload.htm ) a wonderful tool for showing students via projector the types of pottery that existed, how it was made, and ancient history. They also had amazing, easy, and fun printable worksheets I photocopied on the back of the 'how to draw vases' hand out! I also explained that they would apply pigmented/colored slips to decorate with pattern and to create scenes of daily life events or scences from greek mythology. They would also use a 'sgrafitto' 'SCRah-Feet-oh' or scratch with a fine sharp tool to draw detail in the painted on slip. We also learned what 'slip' was, clay mixed with water and minerals to color it. We also wanted to scratch into art history so we made our own scratch board vases to draw into. I painted my vase with black acrylic paint after I colored it in and coated it with warm colored oil pastels. Ready to scratch a design into! Example of an ancient Greek Black figure Hydra vase We also talked how important patterns were in the culture and the process of making the vase and looked at where it was usually applied, around the neck, handles, and base of the vase. Our first step after drawing the vase/pot was to choose a warm colors or cool colors oil pastels and totally COAT the entire vase, pressing hard. If you don't, the black paint will stick and absorb to those areas and won't easily be scratched away. Then after oil pastel fully colored and coated the entire vase, I had students use black acrylic paint to paint over wherever they colored in oil pastel. Next time it would be ready for scratching! We used paper clip ends and wooden styluses to scratch away gently into vases and just remove the black paint exposing the colored oil pastel underneath. Check out some of the finished products!
