Cyanotype (Sun Printing) is a photographic process where light sensitive solution is applied to water colour paper. Natural plant material is positioned in the paper and then exposed to sunlight. The print is then rinsed, resulting in beautiful blue tones images. Please note that I endeavor to make the colour as accurate as possible, but the colours may appear differently in your device. It is advisable to display the print away from direct sunlight, which can cause the print to fade.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK This hand-printed cyanotype is a unique one of a kind work made without a camera lens using living plants. It looks like a screenprint or block print but it’s actually a form of 19th century photography called a cyanotype . The shade of blue and the size of the flowers in this individual 18 x 24” monotype are the same as in the “Eight Agapanthus Triptych”. However, this one is made on a smooth, watercolor paper, rather than the same slightly textured paper as the other three. That is why I did not include it in that set, although it would go well with them. It only takes a momentary pause to realize how much beauty exists in our natural world. The tiny barrier island where I live is home to some of the most magnificent specimens + evidence of God's majestic work. I was inspired to capture them in this 19th-century photographic blueprint process called Cyanotype. I consider the collection of these organic specimens for artwork an act of worship. I astutely look for interesting material on my various nature outings + travels when possible, always imagining what beautiful images they will produce. This soothing Prussian Blue color is produced when two chemicals are precisely mixed, hand-applied to paper in a darkened room, cured + later exposed to sunlight. I select + place the specimen on high-quality paper, which is hand-torn in sizes that beautifully reflect the authentic proportions of the specimen. After a precise amount of exposure, the plant or organic sample is removed, the paper is washed clean of the chemicals + the captivating silhouette is revealed. The hand-applied solution, along with the selection + placement of the organic material, makes each piece a unique keepsake. Cyanotype is a 19th-century form of camera-less photography + one of the most permanent of the photographic processes. The scientist John Herschel first developed it in 1842 for blueprinting. Anna Atkins, a botanist, later used cyanotype to capture her algae collection. She is often considered the first female photographer + a pioneer of the Cyanotype process.
Printing on fabric treated with cyanotype chemicals has always fascinated me - I've dabbled in it a bit, but never really explored it more than that. With all the plant life returning, I'm getting several ideas using cyanotype printing - hopefully I'll have something to show you in a week or two! So what is it? Cyanotype is coating a surface with certain chemicals that when exposed to light make a blue-tinted photographic image. It's been around a long, long time .... British scientist Sir John Herschel invented the process in 1842 and it was one of the main photographic processes used until the early 1900's when black and white photographic prints became more popular. British artist Anna Atkins was one of the early users of cyanotype, creating this piece between 1851 and 1854. You can paint the cyanotype chemicals on a wide range of objects - paper and fabric are mainly used. I'm especially interested in using the process with fabric! I've shown this piece of Lotta Helleberg's before, cyanotype fabric pieces put together into a quilt. This is something along the line of what I'm thinking of working on - I just need to do a little more research into how this type of piece could be laundered. Entanglement, cyanotype appliqued onto linen and hand stitched, 2016. detail of the above work See more of Lotta's work here. Lynette Miller is an artist who works in several mediums, cyanotype being one. Sedge Cyanotype print, collected from the forest bordering the Little River in North Carolina. 9 inches x 12 inches Canson water color paper Print signed on verso. Pencil notations on verso. I can combine shipping on multiple prints to the same address. grass 107.22 Description of Cyanotype Process The cyanotype process is a photographic process. Two chemicals, ammonium iron(lll) citrate and potassium ferricyanide, are combined to create a UV light sensitive solution. The solution is applied to a surface like paper. An object is placed on the treated surface and exposed to a UV light source, like the sun. After a certain amount of time the object is removed and the paper is rinsed in water. This stops the developing process and creates a permanent image. Places on the print that are white blocked the light from coming through. Areas in blue are places where light was able to penetrate the object or bend around the object. This type of photograph is called a photogram. It is a true to life image of whatever has been placed on the paper. Care of cyanotype prints on paper Cyanotypes are unique in that they prefer acidic conditions. Alkaline conditions will cause bleaching and fading of the image. Use only unbuffered, pH neutral or acid free matting, front and back, for framing your print. Direct sunlight will cause fading of the print. Do not display print in a location that will receive direct sunlight. Should fading occur because of exposure to sunlight place the print in a dark location and within a few days the print will darken back to its original color. MEDIUM cyanotype on paper SIZE 11” x 14” "Each year, I look forward to tulip season - the selection from my local flower farmers that I bring home in brown paper wrapping from the Saturday Farmers Market and stand tall and upright in vases around my home. As the days move forward, each tulip takes on a personality of its own, dancing its way out of the vase and into my memory. I love the gestures, the leaning and arching, and the movement that these delicate yet strong, perfect flowers portray. Known as a symbol of joy and unconditional love, this collection was born out of watching flowers take shape in the vases around my home this season that promoted moments of pondering and gratitude." - Sarah Rafferty
