How to use grid enlarging as an easy way to enlarge an image and transfer it to your canvas for painting. Article by artist Teresa Bernard.
The 7th Graders have finished their "Shades of Summer" self portraits this week and I think they are amazing! Before we began the project, students did a pre-drawing of themselves by looking in a mirror (I tried to take some photos of those, but they were so lightly drawn and sketchy that I couldn't get anything that really showed up). The next step of the project was to use the grid method on a photograph to create a map for drawing their facial features and outlines. This method helps students stop drawing symbols of lips, eyes, hair, etc. like in the examples above, and actually draw their correctly proportioned and uniquely shaped features. They added value (shading) with various graphite pencils to make their portraits appear three dimensional, had an art critique, and then used watercolor pencils to create a reflection depicting a summer memory in their sunglasses... I hope these artists are proud of the work- I sure am! And a bonus, because this picture cracks me up :)

We are currently starting our final projects of the year. [I can't believe it!] But for now, let me catch you up on what we just finished... 5th and 4th grade have been working on the same concepts for the past two projects. Both grades participated in a school wide Egyptian art unit by creating Egyptian sarcophagi. They reviewed SYMMETRY, and learned about hieroglyphics. After that, they learned about creating TINTS and SHADES by making an undersea painting. You can find these handouts here- http://www.teachandshoot.com/2015/02/art-room-handouts-round-3-value.html I would have let the students have more freedom with other colors, but I really only had blue left, and underwater came to mind. Thanks for visiting! 3rd grade also participated in the Egyptian art unit by creating Egyptian PORTRAITS! This might be my favorite project from this year. What a wonderful job the students did! After that, 3rd grade made ORIGAMI frogs, but I forgot to take photos! After origami, 3rd grade started creating ASSEMBLAGE art like the artist Louise Nevelson. They are just starting to paint their sculptures this week! 2nd grade created a fun pyramid COLLAGE as part of the Egyptian art unit! After that, 2nd and 1st grade both created ABSTRACT Picasso PORTRAITS. 1st grade and kindergarten created Egyptian necklaces and learned a little bit about PERSPECTIVE by drawing the pyramids. Kindergarten just finished learning about weaving by creating some alligator WEAVINGs!

I haven't posted a 7th grade project in what feels like FOREVER, and here is why... We started making Greek coiled pots back in November, which took quite a while. While the hefty pieces sat in the kiln room to dry, be fired, etc, we started a a new project, which we've been working on for the last three weeks or so and some kids are still finishing up (self portraits- post coming soon). Now, we are back to working on phase two of the pots- glazing... So, I took some pictures this morning of the kids working, just so you can see that we are indeed doing something in here although my displays in the building seem to be missing my 7th grade! I will tell you more about exactly what they are glazing in the final post...
