Back in March I started a Clamshell quilt. See here and here. I Googled one day to see what was out there about the Clamshell - NOT MUCH.....but, I did come across Jossie's blog and discovered she was forming a CLAMSHELL CLUB.....YES, I joined!!! The last day of each month we post our progress. Today is the first post and I decided to give the tutorial everyone asked about in March when I first posted about it........SO......here goes! The above photo shows to pick your pattern. My Clamshell pattern measures 5 inches across it's very widest and is 6 inches long. If you clicked on the 2 here's above, you will find the history on where and when I got my pattern from. I made 2 patterns pieces just alike.....trimming the top seam allowance off of one. I use self laminating pages to help stabilize my pattern pieces. Using one of your patterns with all the seam allowances, trace onto your fabric, making sure you line up the grain of your fabric with the arrows on your pattern....very important! I use what they call a mechanical pencil...the kind you add your own lead to...for tracing my patterns. These pencils make very sharp thin lines. I also use a quilters Sandpaper Board to lay my fabric down for tracing. These are soooo great, your fabric stays put and doesn't pull or bunch up while you are trying to trace. Cut out using a small rotary cutter. The blade on this cutter of mine measures 1'' across. Now.....take your pattern that is minus the top seam allowance and line up the bottom edges. I simply used my left hand to hold down......... then I used my right hand index finger/fingernail to fold down the top edges to form a nice crease all along the rounded tops edge. You could also use a hard object like this small ruler to form you crease, but I found my fingers worked better and it was a lot faster. I usually started at the top/middle and worked my way all the way down. See the nice crease I made all along the top! You could then use a washable glue to tack it down......be careful......too much glue will make your fabric sooooo hard and stiff you won't be able to get a needle through it. There are some nice glue pens out there, but I am just using what I have on hand. Or your could hand baste it down like I've shown. I take one Clamshell and lightly fold in half at the top and bottom and line it up vertically using my creases as a guide to help line it up using the graph lines on my June Taylor mini ironing pad.....remember, at this point I am working from the backside. Take 2 other Clamshells and place as I've shown. Using the graphed lines and 'eye-balling' the 2 pieces, you can line them up fairly straight. I am not overly concerned with having pristine straight rows......after all, who is going to 'whoop' out a straight edge to see if you are all lined up. I am still 'mulling' over some other ideas to improve this step. I'll let you know if I work out something better. I then use small tiny sequin pins to attach my 3 pieces. I guess you could use glue here too....I've not tried! UPDATE: I ended up using dots of glue to piece the clam shells together instead of using the pinning method. You must be careful not to use too much glue or get the glue too close to the edges for it will make the fabric hard and you will not be able to get a needle into it. I liked the glue method. It made the pieces stay together a lot better and there was no slipping around with your placement. If you do get too much glue and it turns hard, I filled my washing machine with cold water and put my top in and just let it have a good soak to remove the glue. NO washing, just soak and then let your machine drain and spin at the end of the wash cycle. I then took it outside and laid it flat out on the grass in the sun and let it dry naturally. When it was dry I lightly pressed it to make it smooth so I could sandwich it with my batting and the back. Here is the side you will be hand stitching the pieces together. I simply try to match my applique threads with the printed Clamshell fabric and use a basic applique stitch. I start at the right hand side there and stitch down to the bottom middle and then back up again to the left hand side stitching the 2 muslin pieces to my vintage printed piece. Here is a view of how your back side will look after you've stitched them together. I usually work in groups of 3's and 5 Clamshells. I find it is more 'portable' this way and can be good handwork when I travel. My design wall here shows you the different size groups I work with. When I have a more extended period of time to work on them I sew all the groups together to start forming my rows. So far, this has proved to be a very fast and easy system for me. I have been smitten with the clamshell shape for some time now! And nothing makes my heart go pitter-pat more than a scrappy clamshell project. Several years ago, I explored different methods of stitching together clams to use in a project. But about 5 years ago, I settled on a method that works best for me. This method does not require any papers or basting the curvy edge....let's face it, this could be called Mary's Lazy Clamshells! I am attaching a clamshell template here, but this method can be used for any size clamshell. So you may want to enlarge or reduce the size of the template in your printer, but if you choose to use the template I have used for my little zippered pouch, you will want to print the template at 100% . It should measure about 2.25

Boy oh boy was this block a learning experience for me! At first I was so intimidated by the embroidery that I didn't even want to attempt it. But I do so love a good challenge, and for months now I've been wanting to improve my embroidery -- and by "improve", I mean actually learn how ;) This week's Splendid Sampler block was designed by Helen Stubbings and it's called Clamshells. You can download the free block pattern here. Before I talk about my attempt at embroidery I want to share some tips with you for those adorable little clamshells. I have three tutorial links to share -and if you've never attempted clamshells before, I recommend reading through all three and then deciding which one appeals to you the most! They each have some great tips and perhaps you'll end up using a mix of tutorials for your own block. Clamshells the iron-on way Clamshells with the foil technique Clamshells: EPP style That last tutorial is the one I used, since I'm a big english paper piecing fan! Alright. Now about that embroidery. I've done just a bit of it before, but it's been so long that I'd forgotten even the basic stitches. Youtube the rescue! For this block we use the backstitch, the stem stitch, and the lazy daisy stitch. I didn't use a hoop, and I feel like it turned out alright. I'm pretty sure I used the wrong type of needle but since two strands of floss fit through the eye of the needle, I just kept going. But my finished block isn't too shabby, right? I think that once I get more comfortable with the basic stitches (and find the right needle) embroidery might be quite relaxing! This week I'm going to hopefully take the fear out of English Paper Piecing curves! There are endless design opportunities to be had when using curved EPP shapes; they are ideal for appliquéing to a larger quilt design or using them in quilt borders. I'm particularly taken by this and this vintage clamshell quilts, so let's try and overcome this so called 'daunting' method so we can recreate beauties like those shall we!? Some of the popular curved EPP shapes include; clamshells, apple cores, Dresden's, circles and hearts - all of which feature one of more curved edges. Today we're going to be looking at clamshells, which are a great shape to get started with if you haven't tried curves before - because they feature both inner and outer curves. Ok let's begin. So for this tutorial I'm using the Paper Pieces 3" clamshell shape. Start by cutting multiple squares that are roughly 1/4" bigger than your paper pieces template. Stack 4 layers together and cut around the shape leaving enough room for turning over. I'm going to show you the two main methods for basting curves, glueing and hand sewing. This is where the nifty little Sewline glue pen is a real timesaver! Place a dot of glue on the paper template and press onto the fabric to secure. Swipe your glue pen from one side of the outer curve. Swipe the glue halfway across the curve and begin pulling down the fabric - be firm when you turn the fabric over to avoid bumps and pleats showing through on the other side. Glue across the other half of the curve and pull down the remaining fabric. You will notice pleats to the back of the shape, this is fine - you need these to ease around the curved edge. Volia! A nice smooth curve, aaaaand you only need to baste the outer curve, how easy was that?! OK. So if you don't have a glue pen and fancy trying it the traditional method - this is how; Grab a couple of paper clips to hold your template to the fabric in place. Take a length of thread, knot the end. Take a running stitch from one side of the outer curve - close the the edge of the fabric. Gently tug on the thread to pull the fabric over the template shape. Carry on sewing until you reach the other side and pull taut. Take a 3 or 4 stay stitches to secure. This method I find is a little fiddlier, but also gives good results. You may want to press the edge to help keep the seam flat. So once you have made enough clamshell shapes for your desired design (mine is going to be x5 wide). Take two, and place right sides together. Find the point at the side of the paper template - make sure they are both lined up precisely as this will make your sewing a lot easier down the line! Thread your needle, knot the end and take 3 very small stay stitches to join your shapes together, tie off. TIP: Join your points together in sets of two, it will be easier than a whole line of them, and will avoid over-handling them. Now we've done our first row of clamshells we want to add them to a background fabric. Cut a piece at least 1/2" wider on each side than your finished row and at least 1" wider on the top and bottom. Press the backing fabric in half lengthwise, this will be our measuring guide to line up the top of the clamshells. But first we have to remove the paper templates! To remove the paper templates, just give it a little tug and slide out. You can see above the traditional hand sewing method clamshells keep their shape perfectly, whereas the glue pen method are a little stretched - just give them those a little press with the iron. Take some quilting appliqué glue with a fine nozzle and dab some very small dots around the edge. Lay the clamshells to line up with the pressed line. Now you need to appliqué the shapes to the backing fabric. Following along the top scalloped line, run small appliqué stitches - we'll cover this in more detail on our 'EPP finishing week' ;-) Once you've appliquer the whole row we can add the next row... With the next row I'm making a set of 4 clamshells because my first row was 5. (The next row will be 5 and then 4 and so on). Place some dots of glue on the back edge as we did before. Line up the row so they just cover the tacking stitches we did to join the shapes together. Make sure they are nice and straight to carry on neat rows all the way down. Applique this row and continue again until you have the finished size you need! See, not too difficult at all is it? I hope this helped you. See you next week for more English Paper Piecing fun!
