Circles: Secants, Tangents, and Chords Guided Notes- The included 2-page set of notes covers vocabulary including secants, tangents, and chords of a circle with diagrams. These scaffolded notes include the main theorem for secants and tangents as well as practice examples for the students to answer on each of the main theorems. These notes are a great tool to help save valuable time in the classroom, simplify circle properties, and help all learners stay engaged on the new material during the lesson. Two answer keys are provided: one with just the theorems and vocabulary filled in for use during the lesson and a full key with the example answers filled in for teacher use. These notes work great on their own or as a part of my circles unit bundle.

Segment Lengths in Circles (Chords, Secants, and Tangents) Task Cards Through these 20 task cards, students will practice finding segment lengths in circles created by intersecting chords, intersecting secants, and intersecting tangents and secants. Both linear and quadratic equations included. This activity was designed for a high school level geometry class. A recording worksheet is included for students to record their answers. They can check their answers by scanning the QR code on each card. Connection to the internet is not required to scan the code. However, a QR scanner app is required on the device. There are several free apps available to download. If you haven't used QR codes in your classroom yet, I highly recommend them! Students love using the technology, and the self-checking makes it easier on the teacher! A version without QR codes is included as well. Tangents of Circles - Point of Tangency, Tangent to a Circle Theorem, Secant, Two-Tangent Theorem, Common Internal and External Tangents, in video lessons with examples and step-by-step solutions.
When starting a new unit on circles, I'm cognizant of how important learning the vocabulary is. Most geometry students are only familiar with the center, radius and diameter of a circle. Following a trigonometry unit, the word tangent takes on a new meaning. The following notes sheets and study guides should help address this.
This fantastic Circle Theorems Worksheet is designed to improve students’ knowledge of circle theorems formed from tangents to circles.
Theorem 10.2 (Method 1)The lengths of tangents drawn from an external point to a circle are equal.Given: Let circle be with centre O and P be a point outside circle PQ and PR are two tangents to circle intersecting at point Q and R respectively To prove: Lengths of tangents are
In this lesson activity, students are engaged from the start. Students will use the tools of GeoGebra (a FREE, EASY-TO-USE, dynamic mathematics software application) to discover properties of tangents drawn to circles. Namely, students will discover two theorems: 1) If a line is tangent to a circle, then the radius drawn to the point of tangency is perpendicular to this tangent. 2) Tangent segments drawn to a circle (from a point outside that circle) are congruent. The activity then leads students to another applet (available for free at http://tube.geogebra.org/m/z7QUMhmr) to provide further investigation and insight into proving the 2nd listed theorem true.
Hi everybody! As teachers, our students are always asking us "how do I study for math?" Well, Geometry, in particular has many topics, where studying is needed to help remember formulas. This is a study guide for ALL the formulas and equations to find the missing angles, arcs, chords, se...

Students will practice solving for arc and angle measures in circles created by intersecting chords, secants, and tangents with this PowerPoint Bingo Game. This includes the following types of problems: -Chords and/or secants intersecting inside the circle. -Tangents and secants/chords intersecting on the circle. -Secants and/or tangents intersecting outside the circle. -Tangents intersecting outside the circle. Approximately half the problems require students to solve a multi-step equation, then substitute their answer back in to find the angle or arc measure. This activity was created for a high school geometry class. The game can be played on an interactive whiteboard such as a Smart Board, or simply projected on to a screen. Students choose a problem from the board (the colored circles represent the problems), they write it out and solve it on their worksheet, then look for the answer on their board. I included the game, the worksheet, and 30 individualized boards with the answers. In this worksheet students will work together and compare answers. Each student will work one column of 9 problems. When they are finished, they compare answers. Even though the problems in each column are different, the students should get the same answer for each problem number. These problems will require students to use theorems about chords, secants, and tangents to find angles inside and outside circles. Algebra is required to solve the problems (multi-step equations only, no quadratics). You can use this worksheet as in class practice, review, or homework. An answer key is included. Make sure these problems are appropriate for your students - look at the thumbnails and download the preview. Students appreciate this one page reviews that cover all the different circle theorems they have learned in the Geometry circle's unit! It is nice for them to see all of the properties on 1 page. They are asked to explain the property as well as complete a problem about it. This worksheet reviews the following circle properties: ABOUT SEGMENTS: -Diameter and Radius -Pythagorean theorem overlaid on a circle -Bisecting a chord -Equidistant chord from center -Intersecting chords -Tangents meeting at a point ourside the circle ABOUT ANGLES: -Central angles and arcs -Inscribed angles -Angles created by intersecting chords -Inscribed quadrilaterals -Angles created by intersecting tangents -Angles created by intersecting secants I use this practice before a test or as general review. Before giving this out, have students practice with peers using this Quiz Quiz Trade activity.

This Equations of Tangents to Circles worksheet helps learners practise finding equations of lines which are tangent to a circle.
Here are my interactive notebook pages and some teaching ideas for "Angles Formed By Secants and Tangents" in a circle. First, we went over each theorem on the pink sheet and highlighted each theorem and explained what it meant. If you are a regular reader, I think I'm going to make a poster of all of my "left side" circle theorems and hang them up around my classroom! After going over each theorem, we started on the following foldable that has practice problems. I found that cutting out two strips of paper and positioning them around the angle helps my ESL/SPED students visualize the arcs and angles better. They were able to see the relationship between the arc measure and the angle. (Highlighting is also a very big help!) After we finished the foldable, students worked on a simple maze review over this topic. Thank you for taking the time to read! Only 5 more school days left for me :) Here are some files that I used in this lesson: Angles Formed by Secants and Tangents Foldable Secants and Tangents Theorems
