Bliaut Dress Outfit “Sea Born” Woolen overdress for women This wonderful coat is the centerpiece of our “Sea Born” collection - a selection of items for those who dream of dancing through the waves. The whole collection is full of beautiful accessories and clothing that are inspired by the sea, from the colors of the sea creatures to the graceful shapes of the ocean. We imagine you wearing “Sea Born” as you stroll along the cliffs to the sound of crashing waves, or enjoying a peaceful sunrise on the misty beach at dawn. This garment is called a Bliaut, which is a common overgarment found in Western Europe in the early medieval period. They were often the last layer of clothes to be put on after a chemise and underdress, used to add a layer of warmth. These garments were often floor-length, fitted around the shoulders and upper arm with longer, voluminous sleeves. Our bliaut is designed with consideration of the historical garment, but altered to make sure it fits the modern figure with comfort. Lacing has been added at the sides to make it easier to put on and take off, as well as keep the beautiful fitted fit across the bust and waist. Much like the historical versions, it is fitted across the shoulders and flares out below the elbow to give you beautiful bell sleeves. This lady is shown with a wide, flat coiffure, the curls of the hair falling to the side and a comb hanging down on the forehead. She wears ornate beaded earrings which run around the ears. With a small, dainty nose, the minimalist aesthetic is arresting; haunting the viewer with a lidless slit gaze and wide emotionless mouth. This ghostly figure would have stood with others in a protective circle around the tomb mound of one of the powerful rulers of the Yamato state. Though their purpose is ill-understood, it seems that they served to demarcate the burial site and were an attempt to console the dead by providing a reassuring environment for their spirits, who continued to live within the sacred precincts of their tomb. In this way the art of the Haniwa seems to crest between this world and the next, the styles and fashions of this figure are taken from the world of the living, but the reduced, melancholy features belong on a different plane entirely.
