When I said I'd created gifts for the Beaver Patrol, you knew I'd made coordinating cards, right? --------- Dimensional Beaver Cards Materials: brown cardstock white cardstock paper trimmer scissors brown marker black marker craft glue Steps: Prepare the materials. Use the paper trimmer to cut: brown cardstock - 9" x 3.5" white cardstock - 8.5" x 3" With scissors, cut: two white teeth two white eyes two brown ears one brown nose one brown tail Use the brown pen to outline the nose and draw crosshatches on the tail. Use the black pen to draw pupils on the eyes. Fold the brown paper into thirds. Glue two teeth onto the top and two ears on the sides. Center the white paper on the brown paper and glue it in place. It will trap the ears and the teeth. Refold the brown paper, which will add folds to the white paper that is now glued to it. Glue the nose and eyes to the front of the card. Fold a small flap on the end of the tail, then glue that tab to the card. You want the tail to flop down when the card is out of its envelope... .... but fold up for mailing. Quick trivia question: What do you call a group of beavers? Answer: Colony. Steve used all of the beaver cards I made, but I like them so much I may need to make more. Although now that I think about it, are there occasions that really call for a beaver card? International Beaver Day is April 7, so maybe that's just the occasion I need to justify more cards.

I am completely CASEing this from a fellow cardmaker, Tommi, on the OWH facebook page. I thought it was so clever when I first saw it. I figured it would sit in the back of my mind for awhile UNTIL I saw these flip-flops at Michaels. I quickly snagged them with my 50% off coupon and came home to play. Once again, a GREAT use of scraps! And the "sand" is rice paper that my mentor Barb gave to me over a year ago. The whole card is mounted on white, which doesn't show well here but let me tell you... it is gorgeous in person! I tried other colors for the background but white just made it swim. Get it, swim... And so begins our plunge into summer...

Hooray for Hispanic Heritage Month! :) Once again this year I was asked to create an art display celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15 - Oct 15)... and man was I excited to get started! The majority of the students at my school are Hispanic... so getting to dive a bit further into the culture and it's art is especially exciting for our kids! This year I had a ridiculous amount of ideas for projects celebrating the culture (thank you Pinterest)... but had to narrow it down.. so I went with Aztec Suns, Zapotec Weaving, and Guitars of Paracho (inspired by this pin from Painted Paper Art). To begin the project I started with my usual PowerPoint presentation (posted on slideshare) giving the students some background information before the art-making began. We talked a bit about the economy of Mexico and attempted to figure out how Mexico could be ranked as the 2nd richest country in Latin America... and at the same time be the Latin American country with the 2nd greatest amount of poverty. The kids came up with some interesting answers... but eventually we landed on the explanation that a small group of people in Mexico own the majority of the country's wealth (making it a "rich" country) while a greater amount of the population lives in poverty (estimated at 44% of Mexicans). We looked at a map visually illustrating the poverty levels in Mexico and found that closer to the United States border less people lived in poverty than in Southern Mexico. Then we focused in on Paracho, Mexico; a city located just 2 hours south of Guadalajara. The interesting thing about the city of Paracho is that it is said to have more guitar-making artisans within it's population of approximately 17,000 people, than in the entire United States! Guitar making is a tradition passed down from generation to generation and is a source of income for the people of Paracho. The guitar-making also attracts a bit of tourism for the city as it hosts a Guitar Festival each year. Next I showed my kids two clips I found on youtube which highlights the guitar-making in Paracho. The videos are in Spanish with English subtitles... but that just got my kids even more excited (since most of them speak Spanish)!! Below is one of the videos (I claim no ownership). To see the ViewPure version to show in school: http://viewpure.com/57Gc1Iy9O8g So inspired by the fine artisans of Paracho and the bright colors and patterns of Mexican art, we got started with our project! I reviewed warm and cool color schemes with my students, then had each table select one or the other to use for their sheet of 12"x18" painted paper. Instead of just painting it though (which is still super awesome)... I wanted to do something different with the kids... so we sponge painted it! Was it a giant mess? Yes. Was it a pain to try to scrub like 30 tempera-paint soaked sponges clean? YES. Was it crazy enjoyable for the kids? Absolutely. The next day I had the kids create the body and headstock for their guitars with their painted paper by tracing a stencil I made. I normally DESPISE using any kind of stencil/tracer... but for this project I thought it would be necessary (especially since I knew they were going to be displayed for Hispanic Heritage Month and time was of the essence). Next I had the kids swap paper scraps so that they had paper of the opposite color scheme (to create a bright contrast) to create the sound hole, bridge, and any other details they wanted to cut and paste. Once the shape of the guitar was fully assembled, students had construction paper crayons and color stix to add any additional color or pattern they wanted. The next day I let students choose what color "strings" (pieces of gift-wrapping ribbon) they wanted to use, gave them sequins and buttons, and then let them go to town! I love how they turned out - so bright and colorful! I've been getting compliments about them on the daily from other teachers and students! :)

This was a super fun project my Grades 4- 6 mixed elective class did at the end of this school year. They LOVED this project- some even made 2 or 3. I pretty much followed the excellent instructions posted HERE on the "We Heart Art" blog. She found the idea on the Fine Lines blog. I was worried we would have to use that chunky yarn (of which I had none) but regular yarn worked well. I collect empty cereal boxes from my students all year long and stockpile them for projects such as these. Students drew some type of abstract pattern on the card. I encouraged them to use shapes as opposed to open lines as we would be colouring these in. Of course some did non-abstract images and some used some open lines and they all worked out regardless :) Once the lines were drawn, students passed over the lines using regular white glue. Then they put pieces of yarn on top. We let these dry overnight. It's important to use heavy duty aluminium foil for this next step. It's just sturdier and thicker. Students cut a piece off the roll that was about an inch larger than their cardboard. Then they covered the back of the tin foil liberally with a glue stick. They need to use ALOT and do it carefully in one direction so the foil doesn't bunch up and rip. Other blogs used spray glue for this step but I didn't have any- the glue stick worked pretty well. Then put the foil over-top and, starting from the center, gently rub over the design using a small square of felt. It really works for buffing the foil over the yarn. Take your time with this step- the more you carefully rub around the yarn, the better the final artwork will work. Some students tended to rush this step. Once it's all glued down, I show students how to neatly wrap the foil onto the back- a technique I used during my book-making phase ;) Then the fun part: colouring the whole image with coloured Sharpies! Don't colour the raised yarn part. Here are Grades 4 - 6 results: This students did 2: one using cool colours and one using warm colours
I am linking up with Fourth Grade Frolics for Monday Made It. This year I am going with a bird theme in my room. It just kind of happened. I already had a great picture I bought last year at my school's art auction. Then I happened upon these, and that's all she wrote! I have a small space above some of my cabinets in my room. Over the years I have tried to put decorative items on the soffit, but to no avail. It was just too small of a distance from cabinet to ceiling and nothing looked right, until now. Yay! I found these at Kirklands and they were the perfect size. I then saw these bird houses at Hobby Lobby. Again, just the right size. Now I was happy. :) I bought the houses and some paint and this is what happened: I am going to snip the string off the small houses, but they came in handy as I was painting them. I am heading up to my room to add them to my decor. Once my room is put together I will snap some photos and post them. Of course I am thinking of bird things to do with my little sweeties once school starts. I saw this on Pinterest and immediately knew I would be doing something like this. I then found some free bird clipart on TpT and made this. It is part of my upcoming bird pack I am working on. If you would like a copy click HERE. I also made a PowerPoint presentation for one of my classes last week. It goes with the book 'The Day the Crayons Quit'. I plan on using it on my interactive whiteboard to check comprehension after I read the story to my little learners. They will be able to choose an answer, touch it, and the correct answer will stay on the screen. I would love any feedback if you choose to view it and/or use it with your class. The Day the Crayons Quit - Revised from lolaragan Thanks for reading! Have a great day. :)
