I used this idea in an assembly yesterday, focussing on people we trust and what it means to trust God. This would work really well if you are exploring miracle stories or stories about trust. Suitable verses to use with it might be: Joshua 1:9: Remember, I commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t be afraid, because the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Psalm 56: 3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. John 14: 1 Jesus said, “Don’t be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me I have to admit that this trick is not an original idea. I found the trick in this book: Simple Science Object Talks by Heno Head Jnr and would definitely recommend getting cold of a copy if you can! You will need: A glass of water (about half- 2/3 filled) and an index card. This is what you do: place the index card over the top of the glass, making sure that the whole of the rim is covered by it, and press down. Hold onto the top of the card with one hand and move your other hand down the glass, towards the bottom of it. Carefully flip the glass upside down, making sure you keep holding the card in place. You may get a TINY bit of drip page at this point, but don't panic! Now slowly move your card holding hand out from underneath and the card should stick, holding the water at bay! I love using science in assemblies because it is generally fool-proof, as long as you have a little practice first. I got a teacher in the assembly to sit at the front and asked if they trusted me to turn the glass of water upside down on top of their head? Even if I covered it with the card? They were not too eager! I then performed the science and it went down very well! We talked about the fact that what was holding the card in place was the air pressure pressing upwards (stronger than gravity pressing downwards). Please forgive my scientific explanations- they are not my strong suit! We can't see the air pressure but we know it must be working or the water would drop out. We can't see God but we know that he is there holding us up and supporting us too. The teacher might not have wanted to trust me, but I knew what I was doing and God knows what He is doing! Talk about: What is trust? Who do you trust and why? Have you ever trusted God? When might you need to God? Encourage children to all have a go at he trick, but make sure you have something ready to collect the drips just in case!

(Mark 1:14-22) At first glance, today's scripture appeared very simple... too simple for a game. There are a plethora of fish crafts but, we haven't played a game in a while, and I had my heart set on having an active activity this week. I read the scripture over and over trying to pick out enough details to support a game. As the week waned, I tried to talk myself into a craft anyway. But I couldn't do it. Thankfully, I awoke Saturday morning with this game idea: Supplies: Colored cardstock Scissors Sharpie Any fish drawing Bean bags (hacky sacks would work well, too) Questions (click to download) Optional: Blue plastic disposable table cloth If you do not want to draw your own fish, or have a picture you can use, you are welcome to download mine here. (Of course, this is for your private use only, and you may not sell the image or anything made from it.) Pre-class Instructions: 1. Using a copy machine or printer, copy the fish image onto 18 pieces of colored cardstock. 2. Cut out the fish. 3. Write one question on the back of each fish. Notice there are only 9 questions, but I have instructed you to cut out 18 fish. Each question will appear on two fish. This allows the game to be played in teams (each team getting their own set of questions/fish, or when there are only a few kids playing, the repetition will help them learn the correct answers.) 4. Print out the question & answer sheet in case it is needed during game play. How to play: 1. If using a blue tablecloth to mimic water, spread it on floor. 2. Spread the fish, face up, on top of the water. If not using the tablecloth, just spread the fish in a smallish area on the floor. 3. Pick a spot on the floor where the kids will stand when it is their turn. I used a rug we have in our room. I simply told them they could not step off the rug during their throw. 4. Each child gets one throw at a time. They are to toss the bean bag in an attempt to land on a fish. 5. When they land on a fish, they get to turn it over and read the question aloud. If they get the answer right, they get to keep the fish. If they do not know the answer, the fish must be returned to the sea, face up. Be sure to tell everyone the correct answer so the next time someone lands on that fish, they will know the answer. 6. The team or child with the most fish at the end of the game wins. This week we are learning about Job. There is so much to learn from Job. He was faithful no matter what happened to him. There are several printables today, including a fill-in-the-blank for the kids to list the before and after things that Job had. And there is a song with visuals, too! Lesson: Today our lesson is found in Job 1 & 2, 42. It is in the middle of the Old Testament, right before Psalms. Job lived in UZ. He was faithful to God. Click here to download the before and after visuals of Job and his blessings. Job had 7 sons and 3 daughters. He also had 7000 sheep, 3000 camels, 500 oxen, 500 female donkeys and a very large household. One day, Satan told God that the only reason Job was faithful was because he had so much, and he had an easy life. So, God told Satan that he could do anything to Job, except lay a hand on him. Soon after, a servant came to Job and told him that while the oxen were plowing and the donkeys were eating beside them, the Sabeans came and took them and killed all the servants except for him. While that servant was talking, another came and told Job that a fire came from heaven and burned up the sheep and those servants, all except for the one that came to talk to Job. While the servant was talking, the Chaldeans took the camels and killed all the servants, except for… the one talking to Job. Again, while that servant was talking, another came and told Job that all his children were eating a meal and a great wind came and killed everyone, except for the servant talking. Job stood up and tore off his robe and shaved his head. He fell to the ground and said, "The Lord gives, and He takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord." No, Job didn’t get angry and shout at God for his misery! Now, Satan told God that Job was faithful because those things (servants, animals his children) that were taken away didn’t hurt him physically. So, God said Satan could do what he wanted except kill Job. (Job 2:7) We purchased this pot and broke it! My husband used this for a visual when he taught the teen class about Job, and I used it for this lesson. The kids loved it! The first thing Satan did was put painful boils all over Job, from his feet to the top of his head. (Job 2:7) Job used a broken pot to scrape himself! Then, Job’s wife started telling Job to curse God because of what was happening to him. Job told her that sometimes there’s good in life and sometimes there’s bad and Job did not curse God or sin. When his three friends came to see Job, they didn’t even recognize him! They ate with Job for seven days and nights and didn’t even talk! They did talk after that, and Job stayed faithful and didn’t blame God. But Job did have questions for God. (Job 38:1) and God answered Job out of a whirlwind. Job said “I know You can do anything (Job 42:2) When Job prayed for his friends, God gave Job back all that Job had lost, He even doubled it! (Job 42:10) God blessed the last days of Job and gave him (42:1212-13): Click here to download the before and after visuals of Job and his blessings. 14,000 sheep 6,000 camels 1,000 oxen 1,000 female donkeys 7 sons & 3 daughters There were not any women more beautiful in the land than Job’s daughters. For our Seminary Christmas Party this year we played a God's Army minute to win it Challenge. The students loved it. Here is an explanation of the games that we played. If you would like a list of the games it is located at the bottom of this post. Keeping Score Every challenge needs a scoreboard. Here is one that you can save into your pictures and print out, or you can copy and paste it into your printing program. It's fun to have team names that come out of the Bible. You can make them up, or have each team make up their name. Every Army needs to complete basic training. So for this challenge you could have every team member complete Basic Training by doing 5 jumping jacks, 5 pushups 5 sit ups, 5 burpees. The first team that has every team member finish wins. If you are worried about some of the kids not being able to do this challenge you can modify the exercises, or have one kid represent the entire team. Do it however it works for your kids. If you have room you could design an obstacle course that the kids need to complete. For this challenge give each team a roll of aluminum foil. They have to make the full armor of God on one of the teammates. Each team should create: The boots of peace/readiness The breastplate of righteousness The helmet of Salvation The belt of truth I did not require the sword and the shield. They will use those in other challenges. The first team to complete the challenge wins. In this challenge I gave each team a cloth bandage, three bandaids and a beach towel. They had to pick a wounded teammate and wrap up their head with the cloth bandage, apply the three bandaids, then carry the wounded soldiers carefully across the room on the beach towel. The first team done wins. I gave each team a big bag of bubble gum. The players could chew as many pieces and they wanted. The first team to blow the biggest bubble wins. What was fun with this challenge was that some of the players took like 12 pieces of gum. Then they found that they couldn't chew them in time. The players who took less pieces actually had the advantage. For this game you will need a nerf gun and several plastic cups. Write various sins on the cups with a sharpie marker. Some of the ones that I came up with are: violence, drugs, laziness, too much social media, pornography, lying, cheating, bullying, etc. You will need to make two sets of cups, one for each team. Line the cups up in a row on two seperate tables. Have the players stand about 5 - 10 feet away, depending on their age. You can have one player shoot all the cups, or your can have each player shoot once then give the gun to the next player to shoot, and so on. You could either play until one team shoots all of the cups down, or the team with the most cups down in one minute wins. For this game you will need a bag of toy soldiers (from the dollar store) and a plastic bucket. For my plastic bucket I used a plastic cauldron that looks more like a Dutch oven than a cauldron. Perfect, right? I separated the toy soldiers by the color. I gave one team all the green toy soldiers and gave all the beige toy soldiers to the other team. For each team give one player the bucket and the rest of the players get one toy soldier a piece. They have to try to throw the soldier into the bucket. For younger kids you can just have them throw one at a time from several feet away. To make it harder I had the students throw it through their legs like the Center on a football team. The person holding the bucket can move around to catch the soldier. If they miss they cannot put the soldier in the bucket. The team that has the most toy soldiers in their bucket wins. Before the kids come hide 24 sheep around the room, 12 sheep for each team. Color code the sheep so that the teams can see the other teams sheep while they are searching. The team that finds all their sheep first wins. Here is a printout for the sheep. You can print it out on two different colors of paper, or you could just mark them in some way to make them different for each team. This game was actually a lot of fun even with older kids. I think that they liked finding the other teams sheep and not telling them where it was. Give each team member a piece of paper to fold into a paper airplane. Each team should have a different color of paper. Have them all fold their planes. They have to all stand on the same line to fly their planes. The team that has the plane that flies the farthest wins. Blindfold a person from each team. Have them both stand on one side of the room. When you say go have them walk to specific location on the other side of the room. The person has to find the spot by following the instructions of their team. Both teams are to give the instructions at the same time. In this game each team had to catch the "light of Christ". I gave each team a plastic dollar store sword and glow stick necklace for each team member. When I said go they had to make their necklace glow and form it into a circle. Then they had to toss it to the person holding the sword from 10 feet away. You could either have the team that caught the most in a minute win, or the team that got all of theirs on first win. Make a shield of faith for each team from a paper plate (or have them make it) Use duct tape on the back for a handle and write the word faith across the front. Each team picks a player to hold the shield of faith. The opposite team each gets a piece of paper to wad up and throw at the person holding the shield of faith. The team that can hit the most paper wads with their sheild wins. Have enough blown up balloons for each team member. Make each team's balloons in a different color. In 5 of the balloons put a letter that spells out the word T R U T H. Both teams should have their own set of balloons that spell out T R U T H. In the extra balloons put a blank paper. The kids need to pop the balloons by sitting on them. Then each team needs to figure out what the word is. The first team to spell out TRUTH wins. For this challenge you need a loaf of bread and a jar of jam for each team. I bought mine at the dollar store. Before we started I placed a plastic tablecloth down for easy clean up. Both teams are to "spread" the gospel to build God's kingdom. By doing so they had to use the sword of truth to spread the jam onto the bread. They were to create a tower with jam and bread. The tallest tower in one minute wins. I made trophies for the winning team. This year I used m&m minis . I glued silver cardstock around the m&m mini container. I printed the medallion on the same silver cardstock. I cut out the medallion and glued it to the top of the container with a glue gun. In the past I printed them out on gold paper and glued them to the top of a Toblerone. Here are the two different printouts for the medallion.
