This is the first part of a series of lessons to help young men and young women prepare to be missionaries. Examples are taken from the story of the Army of Helaman in the Book of Mormon.
The purpose of this blog is to provide fun activity ideas for YSA wards and branches. A good activity will get people to come where they can be spiritually strengthened and make friends who share their values. Once upon a time, it was "Feed them, and they will come," but now it's "Entertain them, or they won't come." This blog is to help anyone whose job it is to come up with an activity to have an idea that will bring in a crowd.
We actually used this as a mini YW lesson to help the girls pass off a choice and accountability value experience, but as I was teaching it I thought that it would make for a great family home evening lesson for older kids and teens as well. A printable version of the handout can be found here. Opening Prayer: Opening Song: Hymns #266, "The Time is Far Spent" Scriptures: Ecclesiastes 3:1, Doctrine and Covenants 60:13, Article of Faith #13 Materials Needed: A clock, the video, and handout (click here to get it in a printable version) Discussion: Imagine for a second that each and every day, your bank account is credited with $86,400. But at the end of each day the money disappears. What would you do? You would try to use up every penny of it every day. Show: Show them a clock and tell them that each and every day they are given exactly 86,400 seconds to use as we choose. We can't save them for another day. Once the seconds are passed, they are gone and it is up to us how we use them. Discuss: According to studies, the average person spends 35-40 hours in front of a television or computer screen. That is an average of 5-6 hours (=18,000 seconds) per day, which equates to approximately 20% of every day. Think of what we could accomplish if we tried to cut that time down by half or fourth. Quote: If you have a twenty-hour-a-week television habit and would repent and convert in into a gospel study habit, in one year you could read the Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants, The Pearl of Great Price, and the entire Bible. In addition, you could read Jesus the Christ, Gospel Principles, the Relief Society manual, Preach my Gospel, the Miracle of Forgiveness, and this would still leave you time to read the Ensign, New Era, and Friend each month. This is based on your ability to read only ten pages an hour. paraphrased from Elder William Bradford Video: Choose This Day (embedded below) Recite Article of Faith #13 (emphasizing "seeking after praiseworthy pursuits"): We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things. Discuss: What kinds of things qualify as "praiseworthy"? The answers could be reading scriptures, serving others, developing a talent, being a better friend, sharing the gospel, writing letters to grandparents or missionaries, helping a family member, staying caught up in school, doing family history, etc. Conclude: Encourage students to try to prioritize their time in such a way that they can use a greater portion of their time each day in more praiseworthy pursuits. Bear your testimony of how you've been blessed as you've tried to use your 86,400 seconds each day more wisely. Closing Song: Scripture Power Closing Prayer: **********************

For a few weeks now I have thought that it might be a good idea to add a few things to our normal Family Home Evening meeting on Monday nights. Chad and I discussed it and we decided to make a few changes. First, I created a Family Home Evening conducting sheet to help the kids learn how to fill it out and how to properly conduct a meeting. Secondly, we want to make sure we remembered to council together as a family to discuss calendaring and problems or issues that we may be having. Thirdly, Chad and I want to add Preach My Gospel Missionary training. In the most recent conference Elder Ballard said, "I invite all members, regardless of your current calling or level of activity in the Church, to obtain a copy of Preach My Gospel. ... It is a guidebook for missionary work—which means it is a guidebook for all of us. Read it, study it, and then apply what you learn to help you understand how to bring souls to Christ through invitation and follow-up." The new conducting sheet helps us remember to do these new things. Hopefully these changes will be a positive thing for our family. Download a pdf version of the conducting sheet HERE This is what the conducting sheet looks like. It used to be cuter until I realized that I would be printing this out every week and that I didn't want to use up a bunch of ink. :)
Even though this game was created for the Seminary Assessment Test, it's a game that could be used for Family Home Evening, Mutual, or just for fun. I printed out the map above on a 24" x 36" engineering print for about $4. You could also do the next size down for only $2. Each player has a marker ( I made mine in different colors out of scrap paper). The starting place is in Fayette, New York (where the church was established), then it goes through Kirkland, Ohio (where the gathering took place) then the finish is in Independence, Missouri (where Zion is located). The reason I put a temple at Zion is because that is what the Saints were headed there to build. Each player takes a turn answering a question. If they get it right they can move forward one space. If they get it wrong then they stay where they are at. Some of the question cards will move them ahead 2 spaces, and some of them will move them back one or two spaces. The first person to get to Zion wins. Question Cards Here are the question cards. I printed them out on card-stock. If you right click and save it into your pictures, or copy and paste it, then you can use it in your printing program. Size it to fit the entire sheet of paper so the portions will print out properly. You might notice that the answers appear to be on the wrong side. That is because it will be printed out on the back side of the paper, so it is reversed. A blog with ideas to aid us on our life's journey to perfecting ourselves and our families. Crafts, Printable Pages, LDS lesson helps and more.
Print these out on bright colored cardstock. Or, print them on colored paper and put them on white cardstock (then you don't have to buy a bunch of different colored cardstock that you won't use later). Next, laminate them to protect them.
I saw the idea for tabbed General Conference journals in several different places online. I liked the idea and wanted to make them with our young women and for our family, but was disappointed not to find any printable versions of the apostle tabs that I'd seen. So I made them myself and thought I'd share them here for all of you! My favorite part of these tabs is that I made them so they are perfect sized to be cut out with a 1-1/4 -inch or 1-3/8-inch square punch ! Easy peasy! Here are the tabs followed by directions on how to use them! The YW loved them! Happy Conference weekend! Preparing the tabs: Print tabs onto white cardstock. Punch tabs out with a 1-1/4-inch or 1-3/8-inch square punch ( or the with scissors). Laminate, if desired. I started off just using regular Scotch tape as shown in the picture, but ended up preferring the invisible gift tape instead. Attaching the tabs: Use a piece of clear tape across the entire tab and attach it to the notebook as shown--with only the name sticking over the edge of the paper. Leave a page or two between each tab (you may want to count the number of pages you're working with, so you know how many) and stagger the placement of the tab, so it is just below the one before it. Five tabs fit perfectly down the side of the 5x7-inch notebooks that we used. I recommend placing the tabs in some kind of order (either seniority or alphabetical). Here is seniority order: Nelson, Oaks, Eyring, Ballard, Holland, Uchtdorf, Bednar, Cook, Christofferson, Andersen, Rasband, Stevenson, Renlund, Gong, Soares. A few more notes: Notebooks: For our family we used 5x7-inch notebooks, which came from the dollar bin at Michael's. These 5x8 floral notebooks from Amazon are super cute too. For the young women, we used some extra personal progress journals that we had in our closet. They were almost identically sized, which made it easier to use the same size of everything. Decorating: We used an assortment of scrapbook paper, glue sticks, and mod podge to decorate the covers. How to make it into a YW value project (we put this inside the back cover): Click here for downloadable, printable version (print at 60% to fit inside of 5x7-inch journal) "Making the Most of General Conference" printable (we put this inside the front cover): Click here for downloadable version ( I used Kristy Maguire's version)--print at 65% to fit inside of 5x7-inch journal Happy Conference weekend! Instead of approaching missionary work by telling others that they need the Church, we can let them know that “the Church needs you.”
A fun game for your family that reinforces concepts you’ve taught and helps kids have fun while learning!
Today we learned about Samuel the Lamanite. I gave an overview of the story using bricks to help fill in the wall. After we read the scriptures and learned about Samuel's warnings I did this activity with my students. I printed out one brick and one arrow for each student. On the arrow they wrote what problems or challenges that they face today. On the brick they wrote a scripture that stood out to them in Helaman 13-16. I loved that almost every student found a scripture about Christ and told how it comforted them. Then I had them come up to the board and place the brick and the arrow on the board to form a wall. Here are the printouts for this. Samuel the Lamanite I copied off of Google Images but it linked back to the LDS color pages. Arrows I printed these out on gray cardstock Bricks I printed these out on red paper To see all of my Book of Mormon Seminary Ideas just click here.
For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is: Making Preparations to Get the Most Out of General Conference Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family. Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest." On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings. Invite a member of the family member say the prayer Sing: "Come, Listen to a Prophet's Voice", Hymnal # 21 Discuss any family business Follow-up with last weeks FHE. Family Home Evening Instruction: Imagine you are in class and the teacher says, "Okay, today I am going to give you some information that will be essential for you to know for your test." She goes on to say, "You will need to write down this information I give you because it is very detailed and you will not be able to just remember it." You suddenly realize that you were so busy this morning thinking about a fun party that you friend was going to have that day, that you completely forgot to bring some paper and pencil with you. You realize you are unprepared. Now, think of it this way, in less than two weeks, you will be listening to the prophet, apostles and other church leaders. They will be prepared to share with you guidance and direction from your Heavenly Father. This guidance and direction is essential to you safely making it through the tests of this mortal life. Are you prepared to receive the direction and guidance? Are you prepared to receive the personal revelation that your Heavenly Father would like to give you? Invite each family member to share ways they can prepare for General Conference. Give each family member the paper, "Preparing for General Conference". Click free download button below to print Invite family member to use this paper to track their preparations for conference. Invite them to fill in the circles each day they say their prayers and read the scriptures. Invite them to think of questions they have and write them down. Then invite them to also use the paper during conference to write down any answers or personal revelations they receive. Close by sharing your testimony. Close with a Family Prayer. Tips for holding family home evening together as a couple.
We had a Family Home Evening about Lehi's Dream and the Tree of Life. It was very basic due to the ages of our children, but it was fun and I know they will remember it for a long time. I feel that small object lessons always stay with my kids a little more. Like our Samuel the Lamanite FHE. I feel that doing an activity along with the scripture story makes it more "real" for them. This is what we did to learn about Lehi's Dream. I took a ball of yarn, tied it to the red desk, and squeezed it to our stair railing. I grabbed the first thing I saw that looked like a tree, my flower arrangement did the trick. (you can use a picture of a tree, sticks from your yard, anything!). I then grabbed a couple apples for the fruit. (This was as basic as basic can be, you can go all out or just keep it simple) We started in our basement with the lesson, keeping what I set up a secret. I sat the kids down and told them a VERY basic version of Lehi's Dream. ( 1 Nephi 8; 11:21-22, 25; 15:36) I found a condensed (child) version of Lehi's Dream from the Friend magazine, I loved it! After we talked about the dream, I told them, "We are going to the tree of life! We have to hold to the rod to get to the tree of life. Remember there is darkness all around in Lehi's Dream, so we need to keep our eyes closed. Try not to let go, or you might get lost. But if you do let go, keep your eyes closed and try to find your way back to the rod." They LOVED holding onto the railing and string. When they made it to the desk, they couldn't wait to eat the apples! My little girl took a bite and said, "Look! Now I'm happy!" (from the Friend magazine's version, CLICK HERE) We can all be happy if we follow God's commandments and do what's right even when people (in the big building) mock or make fun of us. Hold tight to the teachings of Jesus Christ and we can all be happy. Need more Family Home Evening Ideas with lessons, games and treats? The activity I have chosen from the Faith in God book for tonight's Family Home Evening is to "Learn how to budget and save money. Discuss why it is important to faithfully pay our tithing and how Heavenly Father blesses us when we do (see 3 Nephi 24:10-11) Pay your tithing and begin saving for a mission." Welcome everyone to Family Night Sing: "I Want to Give the Lord My Tenth" pg 150 Children's Songbook Have a member of the family member say the prayer Discuss any family business Scripture: Read and Mark: 3 Nephi 24:10-11 Discuss why it is important to faithfully pay our tithing and how Heavenly Father blesses us when we do. Video: Paying Tithing Before Family Home Evening review the pamphlet "One for the Money". Decide what parts you would like to share and discuss with your family. Also view the page on Finances. As a family discuss the families budget. Give each child a budget sheet and explain to them that they will be working on their own budget for the next month. Explain to them that their income will be things such as money received from birthdays, Christmas etc. and any money they receive from jobs or chores (such as allowance). If not doing so already, think about creating jobs/chores for your children and payment for these chores/jobs. They should only receive payment if they accomplish their jobs. This will need to be something that you agree on as a family. Expenditures are anything that money is spent on. Ten percent should come out first for tithing. Another good idea is to set aside at least ten percent for savings. Use the pamphlet "One for the Money" as a guide. Help each child fill out their budget sheet and keep track throughout the month. Each Monday, follow-up with each family member to see how their budget is going. Encourage each family member to pay their tithing and start saving for a mission. Bear testimonies on Budgeting and tithing. Close with a Family Prayer. Free Budget Printable ** I personally have not been paying my children an allowance. They do have chores to do, the chore we have given them are things my husband and I believe they need to do as members of our family. They need to accomplish these chores before they are able to play their game systems or watch TV or play with friends. I am going to be offering them extra chores/jobs that they can do to earn an allowance. Currently my children's chores consist of: Making their bed, reading twenty minutes, completing homework, cleaning their bedroom, putting away their own laundry, bringing dirty clothes to laundry room, their weekly chores (dusting room and one other room, cleaning bathroom together, emptying their own garbage, etc). Things that I will be using a chores for money are: Taking all garbage out to big garbage can, Taking recycle out to recycle can, Weeding (specified area), Cleaning Blinds (specified room), Washing windows, cleaning inside of cars, etc. The paid chores will have a money amount for each job. We have spoken to our children about their missions and the costs. It might be a good idea to have each child set aside a certain amount to go toward their mission. Personally, my husband and I will not require our children to pay for their missions themselves. But wouldn't it be neat if they were able to contribute some to their mission fund.

The best advice Veronica gives kids for overcoming challenges is to be humble, teachable and willing to adapt. See her other ideas in today's post!
My oldest son, Jake, taught Family Home Evening a couple of weeks ago. It all started with a simple experiment. I told Jake that if I poured oil on water it would float on top of the water. Then we went for the food coloring. Then it turned into a discussion, mostly his idea, that ended up being our lesson for FHE. He presented it all by himself. Here is how it went..... The water in the jar represents THE WORLD (meaning the things of this world, pride, basically the things that are not of the Lord). The Oil in the jar represents US. 1 John 2: 15-17: Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. Romans 12:1-2: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. *What does "of the world" mean? *What can we do to "present [our] bodies a living sacrifice" to the Lord?" The food coloring (which was supposed to be red...but we were out) represents THE SINS OF THE WORLD. The oil repels the coloring and it passes straight through in droplets and then colors the water. The kids LOVED that part! It is pretty fun to watch! (Stir all together) Sometimes we sin and we become like the "world". Then we need to repent. (while everything starts to seperate again we read the scriptures below) John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his eonly begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting ilife. Isaiah 1:18: Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. (When it is all settled) Doctrine & Covenants 63:47: He that is faithful and endureth shall overcome the world. (Shine a Flashlight behind the jar. The lights won't cut through the bottom part but really lights up the oil.) Matthew 5:14: Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. *How can we let our light shine so that it cannot be hid? 1 John 4:1-11: Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. I love that last scripture! I could read it over and over again! Jake did such a great job. Mallory was totally into the lesson. I would consider that a success! :)

This is the Liahona Family Home Evening Chart that I created mid 2009, i was getting ready to make a family home evening board with the tags for my family and started thinking of ways that i could do something a little different than the regular board and tags, so.....this is what i came up with! It is a great new way to keep track of whose turn it is for which activity, just turn the compass star each week to show whose turn it is next week, does the same thing as a family home evening board but much more attractive, does not take up any wall space and is a great table top decoration. i have also done them for families that all the kids are grown up and moved out, a nice little decoration with all the family's names on the "Liahona" aprox 6" wide, 6"tall it started out as being able to have 6 names on it, we have recently designed ones that have 4,5,7 & 8 spots to accomadate different family sizes. we have done 9&10, gets a little crowded but works anyone wanting to purchase them can find them at our online store at Online Store 6 Spots on the 6 points of the star we have prayer, scripture, song lesson, activity, treat 7 spots on the 7th point of the star we add another "prayer" 8 Spots for the activities we put the original 6 plus another prayer or conduct, we can leave one blank to give somebody a "day off " when it hits them 4 Spots on the 4 spot version we put scripture, prayer treat, lesson if needed we could change what is put on(of the original six) to meet your needs 5 Spots Scripture, treat, lesson scripture, songif needed we could change what is put on(of the original six) to meet your needs pictures coming soon 10 Spots Online Store under catalog/categories---Christian compass

Oh Family Home Evening.... Who doesn't need help in this department???? lol... Here is what our Relief Society did to help the sisters with their Monday Night FHE's. Our theme was Secrets of a Successful FHE. Here is a picture of our invitations. For a blank copy CLICK HERE And here is what the posters looked like that we put on both sides of the foyer. As they arrived the sisters were led by some foot prints into the Primary Room. We had Mission Impossible and Pink Panther music playing. Our Bishop IS THEE COOLEST and he agreed to be the one who passed out the TOP SECRET folders as the sisters arrived. Inside the CONFIDENTIAL folders were 2 talks on FHE. One was by President Hinckley and the other by Elder Bednar. For their talks, click HERE and HERE. On the inside of the folder was a place to write any notes and thoughts from the night. We had 3 sisters speak. One talked on having FHE with young children, one talked on FHE with mixed aged kids, and the last speaker talked on having FHE as an empty-nester. We also talked about games to play, blogs that are great helps, and most importantly, TREATS. ~For a list of great FHE blogs CLICK HERE ~For free printables for stories from the Scriptures CLICK HERE.
