I used this idea in an assembly yesterday, focussing on people we trust and what it means to trust God. This would work really well if you are exploring miracle stories or stories about trust. Suitable verses to use with it might be: Joshua 1:9: Remember, I commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t be afraid, because the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Psalm 56: 3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. John 14: 1 Jesus said, “Don’t be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me I have to admit that this trick is not an original idea. I found the trick in this book: Simple Science Object Talks by Heno Head Jnr and would definitely recommend getting cold of a copy if you can! You will need: A glass of water (about half- 2/3 filled) and an index card. This is what you do: place the index card over the top of the glass, making sure that the whole of the rim is covered by it, and press down. Hold onto the top of the card with one hand and move your other hand down the glass, towards the bottom of it. Carefully flip the glass upside down, making sure you keep holding the card in place. You may get a TINY bit of drip page at this point, but don't panic! Now slowly move your card holding hand out from underneath and the card should stick, holding the water at bay! I love using science in assemblies because it is generally fool-proof, as long as you have a little practice first. I got a teacher in the assembly to sit at the front and asked if they trusted me to turn the glass of water upside down on top of their head? Even if I covered it with the card? They were not too eager! I then performed the science and it went down very well! We talked about the fact that what was holding the card in place was the air pressure pressing upwards (stronger than gravity pressing downwards). Please forgive my scientific explanations- they are not my strong suit! We can't see the air pressure but we know it must be working or the water would drop out. We can't see God but we know that he is there holding us up and supporting us too. The teacher might not have wanted to trust me, but I knew what I was doing and God knows what He is doing! Talk about: What is trust? Who do you trust and why? Have you ever trusted God? When might you need to God? Encourage children to all have a go at he trick, but make sure you have something ready to collect the drips just in case!
This week the lectionary pointed us to the story of Jesus telling the people that he is the Bread of Life (John 6). As a response, here is a reflective colouring sheet to help children to think about Jesus' words. I know that this comes a little late if you looked at this story on Sunday, but who knows when it might come in handy in the future! Click here to print off the sheet.

Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Ruth 1:16 Ruth is a great book to use to teach children about loyalty and faithfulness. Ruth stays faithful to her mother-in-law, Naomi, and leaves her own community to join Naomi's. Not only this, but she takes on a faithfulness to Naomi's God and becomes an ancestor of David- an amazingly important woman! There are so many themes to pick up here... welcoming new people into a family or community who takes care of us and who we take care of (and why we do this) what it means to become one of God's people how God works through unexpected people Here is a craft (inspired by this post on Scrapbooks etc) to help pick up and explore the theme of the unity that comes from faithfulness to each other and to God: You will need: 4 strips of coloured paper (2 of one colour and 2 of another colour). Mine were about 1cm thick and 15 cm long; glue. Take your first colour and glue at right angles like so. Then glue the 2 strips of the second colour over the top as below. Fold the colour 1 strips over the colour 2 strips as shown and continue... ...all the way to the end. Secure ends with glue. Talk about: Like the braided paper, Ruth joined her life together with Naomi and with God. Who is your life joined to? Why do you think Ruth decided to stay with Naomi? What would you have done? The unity of the braid makes the paper strips much stronger than they were separately. How might this be similar when we join with others in community and with God? Pray: Make another braid. Choose one colour to represent God and another colour to represent yourself or someone you know. As you braid the strips together, pray that you or the person you have chosen will grow closer to God.

We had a great time yesterday looking at the story from 1 Samuel 24 where David cuts off part of Saul's robe. We are looking at 'feelings' at the moment and used this story in the context of choosing not to get angry but asking God to help you do the right thing. To establish the idea of 'choosing' (David CHOSE not to kill Saul) we played a game. I put 5 red balls and 1 blue ball in a bag. Children closed their eyes, put their hand in the bag and chose a ball. The person who chose the blue ball won. For some reason they wanted to play this again and again! Next we acted out the story by hiding and creeping up on the 'king' and I cut off a piece of the cloak our 'king' was wearing. We talked about how David might have been angry at Saul for trying to kill him, but he chose to not hurt anyone. We then discussed how we feel when we are angry and how we can ask God to help us. I showed the children some reflection bottles (bottles containing water and glitter) and they took it in turns to shake the bottles and watch the glitter settle and we prayed that God would help us to calm down when we felt angry. They were fascinated and I had to quickly make up another bottle for them to use during our play activities! Our craft was paper tearing and sticking to represent the piece of robe that David cut off. They spent ages on this! Then we had some free play around the themes of the story... playing with the reflection bottles continuing with the paper tearing activity Playing with capes and crowns hiding in the 'cave' we made from draping a play tent in fabric The children especially loved the last two activities and kept taking it in turns to hide in the cave, creep out and mime cutting the robe of a resting 'king'. The grown ups had to be constantly surprised kings! As a take home activity, each child took away a copy of the story cube. Print off a copy here.
