It’s that time of year again, where the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. Even though I love Autumn and cosy evenings, I do miss the sunny days… it’s just not the same waking up in the dark every morning! Therefore, as we get out of into Autumn and into winter, I find myself looking forward to winter solstice. If you’re the same, here are a few ways to celebrate winter solstice in your bullet journal! Recommended Supplies: Archer and Olive Journal – The lovely and thick pages have no bleeding or ghosting, so you get a clean start for every spread! Also, it means you can decorate the spread without worrying about it. Pencil – To carefully plan out your ideas so you can make sure your spread has everything you need. Fineliners – My favourites are the Unipin fineliners as they’re waterproof, affordable and have a strong nib. Decorative Touch (optional) – This could be anything from washi to watercolour, or of course, nothing! I usually like to add a personal touch to my spreads so they’re more fun to use and look at. What Is Winter Solstice? I’ll be honest, up until recently, I didn’t actually know what winter solstice was. I simply knew it as the shortest day of the year. But I found out winter solstice is actually something widely celebrated around the world. If like me you’re not sure what it is, in basic terms it is the mid point of winter with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year. As I am in the Northern Hemisphere, this happens in December. But if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, you will probably wonder why I’m talking about it now, because for you the solstice happens in June! Also, for some people winter solstice marks the beginning of winter rather than the mid point. It’s really interesting that one day can mean so many different things to different people! As I said before, for me winter solstice is simply the shortest day of the winter, and it’s significant to me as I look forward to brighter mornings. However, in some cultures it is a very significant time of year where symbolically it is the death and rebirth of the Sun, so it is celebrated with festivals and rituals. For this blog, I talked to a few of my bullet journal friends in different parts of the world to see what winter solstice means to them, and how they like to celebrate it in their bullet journal. Countdowns The first thing that comes to mind for me when I think about celebrating winter solstice in my bullet journal is a countdown to the day! Whether you’re counting down to celebrations, or simply counting down to brighter days, it’s a fun way to get excited. Not all of these trackers are specifically for winter solstice, but they could all be easily tweaked to work for you!! My favourite tracker is this one by Marie (@metro_boulot_bujo). Here you can see how she has kept a track of how the nights were starting to get longer. If you wanted to do this, you could include the whole month like Marie has, or a countdown to winter solstice. You could also make it simpler but just highlighting either the sunlight hours or night hours if you’re not as creative as Marie! Another idea for a countdown tracker is to create doodles, one for each day of the countdown, and colour them in each day! This example is a Christmas countdown by Julia (@julia.pezowicz) but you could adapt this to be more suited to winter solstice with anything you wish. One with snowflakes or little suns could be really cool! Finally, I couldn't find an example, but if you want to do something really simple you could make a countdown by making a box for each day until winter solstice, and crossing off or colouring in each day that passes! Winter Bucket Lists I was talking with Julia ( @julia.pezowicz) about what winter solstice means to us. She said for her it’s time to complete her autumn bucket list, and start on her winter bucket list! I thought this was an amazing idea, and if you want to do one too here are some ideas: An example of a bucket list perfect for this time of year is this one by Masha (@mashaplans). It includes lots of lovely activities like family movie time, lighting fall scented candles and drinking pumpkin lattes! I love this winter bucket list by Anna (@anna_akhremenko), which has more fun things to do at this time of year! And finally, here’s another lovely layout idea by Ola (@chwila.dlasiebie) where they can check of each item as they complete it! Hygge For Elizabeth (@elizabeth.kramer.art), winter solstice is the start of winter, and it a time to bring elements of hygge into her days. I had never heard of hygge before, but it’s a Danish word that doesn’t have a direct translation in English. But in short, hygge means “cosiness” and by bringing hygge into your days, it means really simple things such as lighting candles, having nights in with friends and home baking. If you’re still not sure what it is, head over to Lisa’s Instagram (@the.whimsical.journal) and you’ll understand exactly what I mean! If these images inspire you, maybe you want to bring some elements of hygge into your bujo. If so, why not start with a reminder of what Hygge is like this gorgeous spread by Elizabeth (@elizabethturn): I love this spread by @din_notes of their perfect cosy day. Makes me want to doodle mine too: And here’s an ultimate guide to hygge with gorgeous drawings by @bullet_journal_joys, which would be a lovely idea to think about your favourite things and include them in your journal: Winter Illustrations And finally, a way I always celebrate winter solstice in my journal is including some sort of drawing/painting/quote about winter. Here’s my favourite wintery painting: And a fun winter quote by Stephanie (@stephiejournals): Hopefully I’ve given you some help and inspiration to celebrate winter solstice in you journal! And if I have, I would love to see your spreads, so tag me on Instagram (@hayleyremdeart) and use #hayleyremdeinspired to get the chance to get your creations featured in my stories!

How many times have you thought, or even grunted aloud, "One of these days, I'm going to get my life together"? If you're any bit like me, the answer is "a lot." My coworker and I say this half-jokingly on the regular, and I'm betting that we all think about how messy life can be and how much we wish we could feel like we're on top of it at all times.

Winter Solstice marks the beginning of winter season and is one of the oldest known winter celebration. It is the longest night and the shortest day of the year. The days have been getting shorter and now we can celebrate the sun as it returns from the period of darkness.
The first time I saw Lovopoly, I knew it would be the perfect gift for me to make for my first anniversary with Jon. I can't believe it was so long ago that we were together. We're working on year four and still going strong (and living together)! I feel like this game was one of the most labor intensive things I've ever made for Jon. I really love making gifts for people, and I had to do it big the first time around. If you want to make a Lovopoly game or any other version of Monopoly, be sure you have enough time allotted, because it's not something you can do in a weekend. MATERIALS A game board (I bought a game from Goodwill with a fold out game board. You can also buy an actual Monopoly game so it has all the pieces.) Paint Cardstock (White and in assorted colors) Mod Podge Dice (2) Monopoly houses and hotels (You can order these on Ebay) Game pieces (These can come with the game you buy or you can make your own) Clear packaging tape Pictures Markers Large sponge brush or paint brush Computer, paper and printer DIRECTIONS Game Board 1. Paint the game board whatever color you prefer. I chose black so it would cover up everything else that was on the original game board. 2. While the board dries, cut out 36 rectangular pieces of white cardstock of equal size for the game board and four square pieces for the corners. 3. Cut out long, rectangular pieces for the properties on the board. You'll need eight different colors. Figure out which ones need three and which need two. 4. Type up and print out the names and costs of the properties for your game board. I chose properties that were significant to Jon and me, such as Louisiana Tech (where we met and went to school), Bossier City and DeRidder (where we're from), and Istanbul and Australia (the #1 places on each of our travel lists). Instead of the railroads, I did four different cruise lines, and instead of the utilities, I did a drive-in movie and a picnic in the park. Instead of jail, I did the dog house. Instead of Community Chest and Chance, I did Family Jewels and Get Lucky. Get creative! It was so fun to come up with property and card types. 5.Use mod podge to glue the colored rectangular pieces, property names and costs onto the game board as needed. You can also place some pictures on certain spaces. Use markers to decorate and label anything else as needed. 6. Use the sponge or paint brush to paint mod podge all over the game board when it looks how you want it. Money 1. Cut pieces of cardstock into rectangles, using seven different colors. -- 20 $500 bills -- 20 $100 bills -- 30 $50 bills -- 50 $20 bills -- 40 $10 bills -- 40 $5 bills -- 40 $1 bills 2. I cut round circles of seven different pictures - 3 of Jon, 3 of me, and 1 of the both of us. I printed these on regular paper. Glue these to the center of the cardstock. 3. Use a black marker to write the dollar amount on the dollar bills. 4. Optional extra step: Use mod podge to paint over the entire dollar bill. Property cards 1. Type up the information for the cards. Do a simple Google search or look at the actual Monopoly cards to get the rent prices and all of the other information for the cards. 2. Cut white cardstock into rectangles for the property cards. 3. Coordinate the colors on the board with the colors on the card, and use mod podge to glue the cardstock onto the property cards. 4. I chose to write out the names of the property on each of the cards, but you can also print it out like the rest of the information on the card. 5. Optional extra step: Use clear package tape to cover the entire card to give it a laminated feel. Alternatively, you can also actually laminate the card. Community Chest and Chance Cards I changed this to Family Jewels and Get Lucky. 1. Type up "Family Jewels" and "Get Lucky" in different fonts into rectangles. 2. Type up whatever you want for the cards. Be sure to include "Get out of the Dog House free" cards and cards that will make the players pay or receive money. 3. Print these out and cut them up. 4. Use mod podge to glue these onto pieces of cardstock. 5. Optional extra step: Use clear packaging tape to cover the cards to make it look like it was laminated. Additional steps 1. Cut out pictures of you and your significant other to use as game pieces. I taped pictures to game pieces that were included in the game I bought. 2. Wrap the game box in wrapping paper (I turned some wrapping paper onto the white side). This was the original box the game was in. 3. Use markers or paint to decorate the box. 4. Collect everything into small boxes or Ziploc bags and place in the box with the game board. 5. Give to your significant other and prepared to be showered with lots of love. 6. And of course, PLAY IT! It'll be even more fun because it's personal to both of you. I know my steps were pretty vague, but once you get started, it's pretty easy to proceed to the next step. I had a lot of fun putting all of this together for my boyfriend, and he loved it! If you have any questions or need clarification on any of the tips or need any tips, I'd be happy to help! Have you ever made a Lovopoly game or any other homemade board game? This post is for the #SummerBloggerChallenge. This week's prompt: Write a tutorial. Lies, accusations, and manipulation... it's an emotional rollercoaster that's more powerful than a soap opera.
