Christmas is around the corner. Here are different Christmas lessons focusing on Jesus to use to teach kids about Jesus this holiday season.
We started lesson 14, Isaac, the Son of Promise, by talking about the promises God had made to Abraham. (You can read about Lesson 13 here.) We then had a brief discussion about how sometimes we have to wait to receive the things promised to us. Perhaps we are promised a holiday or a special […]

I have a new Minute To Win It game. It's a New Testament version. Just click on the picture to check it out. In Seminary this year we are studying the Old Testament. For our Christmas party I thought that it would be fun to have a review of the year so far with Minute to Win it games. Here is what I came up with. I gave each team 5 apples and had them do their best to stack them. The team who had the most apples stacked at one minute won. You could also have a person from each team eat an apple and the person who eats most of the apple wins. For this one you will need 2 jars and a bunch of plastic animals. I taped a picture of Noah's Ark to the outside. Each person puts the jar by their feet. While standing straight each person tries to drop an animal into the jar from their nose. The teams that has the most animals is the jar at one minute wins. Each team is given a stack of cups. The team who has the tallest tower at one minute wins. For this one you will need 2 empty tissue boxes, 2 belts and 16 ping pong balls. Put slits on the two sides of the tissue box to slip the belt through. Fill each tissue box with 8 ping pong balls. Each person playing ties the belt around his waist with the box in the back. They both have one minute to dance around until all of the ping pong balls (seeds) have been bounced out of the tissue box. For this you will need 2 straws, 40 marshmallows, and two plates. Each person will have one minutes to get 20 marshmallows (sheep) into the plate (the pen) with the straw. For this challenge you will need 10 3"x 14" pieces of poster board and about 40 cups. Give each player 5 pieces of poster board and a stack of cups. Each player builds a ladder with the poster board for rungs. The team with the tallest ladder wins. Each team gets a copy of Joseph's coat to color. They have one minute to color it on their head. Each player must use at least five colors. The team is allowed to give advice on how to color in the lines. The team that does the best job wins. This one I did not end up doing. Here's how it could be done. You will need 20 old Bibles. Each team will have one member help another team member stack 5 Bibles in each hand. Then they will have to walk across the room with all 10 Bibles without dropping them. The team that gets all 10 Bibles across the room first wins. This challenge is in reference to Deuteronomy 33:17. Give each team a bag of Honeycomb cereal. Each team will have one member lie down on the ground while another team member stacks the honeycomb cereal, one on top of the other, to look like a unicorn horn. The team that has the tallest horn wins (without cheating). For this challenge you will need to print out two pictures of the brick wall below onto cardstock. Fold the cardstock in half like a card. Place the cards at one end of the table. Both teams have a member blow the card across the table and then try to get the card to hang off the edge without falling off. If the card falls off then they have to start all over. Bounce a ping pong ball at least twice to knock over Goliath. The first person to do it in under a minute wins. Here's a printout for you to use. For the Champions I made these trophies out of Toblerone. Just print out the picture below. Cut it out and glue it to the top of a Toblerone. The students loved it. This is all the further we have studied this year. If we come up with more games I will be sure to post them on here. Good Luck! Check out my other New Testament Minute to Win it game. Here's another fun game to play with scriptures. I also have Grinch Minute to Win it Games And Alice in Wonderland Minute to Win it Games And Frozen themed Minute to Win it Ideas

This continues our series learning about Jesus. This is week 4 in the fourth quarter of a year of Preschool Bible Study that I assist with on Wednesday evening. This week we reviewed the Wise Men visiting Jesus and studied Jesus staying behind in the temple. The scripture is Luke 2:41-52. Mary, Joseph & Jesus live in Nazareth and Jesus is 12 years old now. As Jesus grew up, the Bible tells us He became stronger in spirit and was filled with wisdom. (Luke 2:40) Joseph & Mary went to Jerusalem every year to celebrate the Passover. The Passover was a special time of worship to remember God taking care of His people. They traveled with a group of people. When Joseph & Mary had completed their worship in the temple, they left Jerusalem to return home. But Jesus had stayed behind, and they didn’t know Jesus wasn’t with them! Mary and Joseph started looking for Jesus after a day of traveling. They asked their relatives and friends if they had seen Jesus. Mary & Joseph couldn’t find Jesus anywhere! When Mary and Joseph didn’t find Jesus, they went back to Jerusalem looking for Him. (Talk about being lost and how it would feel not knowing where their son is.) Finally, after three days of searching for Jesus, they found Him in the temple. Jesus was sitting with the teachers! Jesus was asking questions and listening to their answers. When Joseph & Mary found Him, they were amazed that He was calmly sitting there while they were frantically looking for Him! They asked Jesus why He had done this! Jesus answered them saying 'Why are you looking for Me? Don't you know that I would be doing God’s work? Mary & Joseph were so happy to find Jesus safe! Mary, Joseph & Jesus left Jerusalem to return home to Nazareth where Jesus continued to grow up. The students love these foldables. Print both sides, then fold as you see above. The 'doors' to the temple will open and Jesus is inside with the temple priests. This includes the color and black and white. Click here to download. The printable for this lesson is a Bible Review book. It is a great project for this lesson since Jesus was studying at the temple. If you want to use the above for handouts, this would be good to make one for the teacher to review. There are several ways to put them together, depending on how much time you have. Jesus would have been studying the Old Laws and people, so we used this to match the people to what they did in the Bible. This is a great discussion starter. Click here to find the download and different instructions for putting it together and how to use it. Yes, here is another map! But they love them, so I made this one to review the family traveling to the temple, I covered up Jesus with my finger for Mary & Joseph to begin their trip home, then back to find Jesus, then they all return home. This includes the color and the black & white to print. Click here to download the map. You can print the lesson with a review of last week. Click here to download the new updated songs. Click here to print the visuals. Click here to print the Pictures to Color. Click here to see early elementary ideas and printables for this lesson, including a song. Welcome to the Christmas Toddler Bible Lesson Series at Bible Basics! I'm glad you stopped by. If you're wondering what we're up to in this ongoing series, check out this introductory post. For a growing list of toddler and preschool Bible lessons you can take a look at the Bible Basics page. Since Christmas is right around the corner I wanted to share with you the ways in which we have taught our toddlers and preschoolers about the birth of Jesus. This is a perfect time to focus on the reason for all of the Christmas holiday hype and to help your young child understand what it’s all about. Plus, Christmas lessons are fun for everyone! Today we are finishing up a four-part lesson series focusing on Jesus’ birth. You can find the first three lessons here, here, and here. This is another fun activity that I always enjoy doing with toddlers and preschoolers. They get a kick out of the different items to feel and smell and I enjoy explaining the significance of the gifts Jesus received. WISE MEN GIVE GIFTS TO JESUS Matthew 2:1-12 Memory Verse: Choose one that fits your child’s age and ability. “The angel said to Mary, ‘You will have a son. You will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God.” -Luke 1:31-32 “Today…a Savior has been born. He is Christ the Lord.” -Luke 2:10-11 (simplified) Lesson Focus Wise men gave special gifts to Jesus. Project Sensory Gift Bags Materials - Small gift bags (I usually use paper lunch bags but have sometimes found gift bags in dollar bins at various stores.) - Pennies or other coins (Although I have never had a child at home or in the classroom put these in their mouths, you can replace this with aluminum foil or construction paper cut into circles if you are concerned about choking.) - Tea bag - Perfume or cologne - Fabric scrap Directions 1. Give your child a small gift bag. 2. Give your child a few pennies or other coins. Explain that this is the “gold” that was brought for Jesus. Talk to your child about how gold is a valuable gift that was given to kings. Tell him that Jesus is the King of kings. Place the pennies in the gift bag. 3. Give your child a tea bag. Let her smell it and tell her that this represents “frankincense” that was given to Jesus by the wise men. You can explain how frankincense was the sap taken from a certain tree. It was used for healing and the Israelites burned it in the Tabernacle at the place where God promised to meet with them. It is a special incense that reminds us that Jesus became our Emmanuel: God with us. Place the tea bag in the gift bag. 4. Finally, give your child a piece of fabric. Place a small drop of perfume or cologne onto the fabric. Ask him to smell it. Explain that this perfume represents “myrrh” which was given to Jesus by the wise men. Myrrh was more costly than gold. It was used when people died to prepare their bodies for burial. The myrrh reminds us that Jesus came to die on the cross for our sins. Place the fabric scrap in the gift bag. 5. Use the gift bag to talk more about Jesus’ birth and the ways that the gifts the wise men gave point to the purpose God gave Him in coming to earth. How We Go Through the Lesson 1. Recite or sing memory verse. 2. Read Bible story. We use the Beginner's Bible, but you can choose a children's story Bible or "grown-up" translation that suits you and your family. 3. Recite or sing memory verse. 4. Craft or project. Depending on the day of the week this may be a project like the one above or it could be a coloring page or something completely different. *Repeat the lesson almost every day. This could mean doing it on weekdays or taking one day to work on the project, saying the memory verse together throughout the day, and reading the Bible story before bed each night. It doesn't matter when or how, but the repetition is key for toddlers to retain the lessons presented to them. When you give your children gifts at Christmas, what significance do they have? Do they direct your child’s attention to Jesus? How?
