Thank goodness we live in an age where we can get inspiration from teachers all over the world! Most art teachers are alone in their building, so we do not have the opportunity to collaborate with our peers as much as the other teachers do. I'm so blessed to live in an age where an art teacher clear across the country or world is accessible in mere seconds! We can all share our great ideas, and not have to leave the comfort of our pj's if we don't want to! Anyway.... As I was scrolling through Instagram, I came across this beautiful project from Art with Mrs. E. Her 4th graders did such a great job, I wanted to try it out with ours as well! We will be starting this when we come back from Christmas break! I love this technique of spreading chalk to create the look of the Northern Lights. Here's how I did it. Materials: Sargent Art chalk pastels Crayola White oil pastel Crayola Artista II white paint 9x12" Tru-Ray construction paper Sax 90 lb paper First start with black paper, and a piece of 90lb white paper. Tear that 90lb piece of paper 3 or 4 different ways horizontally. Then, use chalk pastels to add color to the top of the tear. Rub in an upward motion to spread the chalk onto the black paper. Oh, and add a thick white line in chalk for the snowy ground! Add more color than I did in this picture! I realized I didn't add enough when I starting spreading it, and not much color was coming off! Here's a new video showing how to color and spread the chalk onto your black paper For some reason the warm colors spread and colored better than the cool did. I did 4 layers, but you could do more or less, or even do them going in a different direction! Maybe vertical instead of horizontal! I'll try that next! The next class the students can add paint to their picture, by painting black evergreen trees, their reflection in the water, and stars or snow in the background. Now that I've completed mine, I'll do the stars before I do the trees next time! Whoops! Guess my trees will just have snow on them! When I instruct the students to do the stars, we will rub the bristles with our fingers to create the stars, so our paint dots are much smaller! After they paint the black trees, add the reflection of the lights with chalk to the water, in a horizontal motion. Then, add the reflection of the trees in a horizontal motion with black tempera paint. Stay tuned for some awesome art! Hope you and yours have the happiest of holidays, and a wonderful New Year! Last week we had a 1-2 hour delay, each day, so I haven't had 4th grade until today! Mrs. Fambrough's class is off to a wonderful start, and as usual, Mrs. Stacey is so very proud of them!! Dr. Fambrough's class did a great job today, too! “Lauren Stacey is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.”

This week my 3rd and 4th grade students kicked off the first week of Fall by making leaf prints!! These leaves came off a sycamore tree and have a sort of fuzz on the back that soaks up the watercolors and allows them to blend beautifully! I let them paint it however they wanted. This student painted the sky on hers and asked me to take a picture of the leaf against the sky to see the camouflage effect! We used the crayola 16 color box which is my absolute fav right now! We tried it with other leaves too Students learned about craftsmanship and we talked about keeping their paper background nice and clean without smudges. My younger grades made crayon resist paintings and leaf rubbings with multiple colors. We are ready for Fall and cooloer temps in Houston!

As the room parent for my daughter's second grade class this year, I wanted to make something pretty cool for the students in class to give their parents for Christmas. I knew I wanted to incorporate photography and to do something fun and something they would like to keep for years. This was a project that was a mix of a few ideas... starting with the currently popular 'photo booth' and adding in some amazingly awesome Christmas themed photo booth props. (all cut using the Silhouette machine) So, the idea was to take several photos of every child in my daughter's second grade class, edit the photos into photo strips, print them at Costco, and then collage pauge them onto wooden boards and make them into ornaments. Yup, that's a lot of boards and red paint. I rolled it on because I could do so indoors and they would dry in a reasonable amount of time. (Had to take into consideration the December weather, spray paint wouldn't have dried outside.)

This week 4th grade will start their fall birch tree painting! We create these by using.... Materials: 12x18 90lb paper Crayola black tempera paint little pieces of cardboard and tempera cakes for the leaves and grass Day 1: We will look at photos of birch trees online, and talk about the texture of the bark and really examine what these birch trees really look like. I'll demonstrate how to drag the cardboard and black paint across the paper to create this unique bark texture. The students will get a piece of practice paper first, will practice creating these trees until they get the hang of it, and then they'll get their final piece of paper to create their painting on. Here's a picture of how to get started. If you're right handed, swipe your cardboard to the right. Vice versa if you're left handed. I create one side, and then flip my paper around to create the other side of the tree. This makes things so much easier! Here's what the students should finish on Day 1 Day 2: We'll add branches with Sharpies, and paint leaves and grass with our tempera cakes! Here's what they have finished so far! These guys and girls are off to a great start!! You can also change the background up to accommodate for any season. Here's a different arrangement, with snow and sunset colors in the background! “Lauren Stacey is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.”
