Flower #1- Karey Solomon's flower [Bottom Left] This started with Karey Solomon's idea in Tatting Times August 2010. Karey has a pattern from using up thread off of shuttles. Her Grandmother's Flower Garden tablerunner-tablecloth-bedspread is all little flowers of compatible colors fused together. The instant I saw it I thought about my Grandma's Flower Garden quilt pattern . I wanted mine to look more like that so I used a gold color to go around the flower. This flower started with Karey's hand dyed size 20 thread. It is variegated purple, blue and green. I surrounded her little flower with 6 others then surrounded the whole circle with gold Elizabeth size 20.
Six out of the nine large motifs are now made. Only three left, plus the edging. Of course, with a pattern like this, there's not really a whole lot new to say with each new motif added. I really like the negative spaces that are emerging between motifs, though. I think these secondary patterns are going to be even more interesting in this 3x3 doily than in the 2x2 version shown in the book. Once I start the third row of motifs, it won't fit on the scanner bed anymore, so from now on it will be photos. Hopefully I'll get some good light when I need it.
My Motif # 6 is from Judi Banashek's book "Advanced Tatting Patterns". I used white Lizbeth Size 20 thread. Judi is the founder of our Oklahoma Shuttle Bugs tatting group. She is a wonderful teacher and I learned so much from her. A few years ago she moved to Waxahachie, TX to be close to her daughters. Good news! Terry McGuffin gave me permission to post her pattern for the Windmill Snowflake. As soon as I locate it I'll try to figure out a way to post it here.

Here's a true study in mixed textures. This cocoon-style cardigan prominently features a gorgeous open lace panel in the back. Then, ribbed dolman sleeves are knit out from the sides of the back panel to provide a tailored contrast and create the cocoon shape. A striking, yet delicate, banana leaf panel embellishes both the shaped shawl collar and the optional sleeve cuffs. This is a conversation-starting piece that will give you a variety of stitches and techniques to work on and combine for a gratifying result. Sample is knit up in Berroco Ultra Alpaca – a yarn that gives spectacular stitch definition with enough softness and color sophistication to carry off this design. Mindlessly knitting the smaller eight-point star, it occurred to me that several of them strung together with a simple crochet chain for a garland would be the perfect decoration for our sitting room this Christmas. So I enlarged the star pattern that I wrote about before to knit a 5 1/2" star ornament and did just that, adding some large tassels to the ends. Made a few pom poms for the wreath and voila! The Christmas star ornament pattern is below. Hang them on your Christmas tree! copyright 2013, S. Watterson/knitnscribble Here's the new larger 8-point Christmas star ornament knitting pattern. copyright 2013, S. paper hearts crocheted with vintage tatting thread.
I made a new pattern called Candy Heart. It's available in my Etsy shop (if you want to check it out you can do so by clicking HERE) The hearts pictured above are tatted in size 80 DMC Special Dentelles, color #210 and color #603. The pattern contains two versions: Candy Heart (pictured on the left) and Candy Heart with Border (pictured on the right). I also made a few in Liz Metallic thread (colors are Rose on the left and Raspberry Pink on the right): The construction is similar to my Classic Heart tatting pattern, but I think the Candy Heart is quicker and easier to make. The only advanced technique is a self closing mock ring at the bottom of the heart. Other than that, it's just rings, chains, picots, regular joins, and lock joins. I've actually been enjoying tatting this pattern, and made samples in DMC size 80, Lizbeth size 20, and Liz Metallic. I may tat a few more over the coming weeks: One thing to note about this pattern: the Candy Heart (above left) is designed to lay flat with minimal to no blocking. However, the Candy Heart with Border (above right) is designed to cup after closing Round 1: This is done intentionally, to prevent ruffling after Round 2 is added. As you add Round 2, the design will flatten out, which you can see in the photo below. This sample is tatted in Lizbeth size 20, color #127 Butterfly Breeze: If you are curious, here is a photo of the ruffling that would occur if Round 1 is tatted flat: Anyhow, all of this is mentioned on page 7 of the Etsy pattern, but I just wanted to go into a more detailed explanation here in case it would be helpful.
