The wheels used on the old-timer cars in LEGO's own Hobby Sets (from the seventies) came in very handy. The wheels have a metal pin at the back, designed to be attached to special 2x4 bricks, but those would have looked ungainly. As an alternative, I found that the pins fit quite nicely inside pneumatic hoses, which in turn fit inside a Technic brick, with the forming the axle. The model actually drives quite well.
