Die Welt von Gestern – das war aus Sicht Stefan Zweigs die bürgerliche Welt im habsburgischen Österreich, die in zwei Weltkriegen unterging. Zweig schildert das alte Wien, das Leben seiner Generation und seine eigene Biografie. Im südamerikanischen Exil, in dem er 1939–41 dieses sehr persönliche Buch niederschrieb, erreichten ihn die Schreckensmeldungen aus Hitlers Drittem Reich. Die »Welt von Gestern« war unwiederbringlich verloren – doch in diesem bewegenden Buch wurde sie für die Nachwelt aufgehoben.
