Founded in 1775, Royal Copenhagen was supplier of goods to the Royal Danish family and was under protection of Queen Juliane Marie.Their trademark has been the three wavy lines, symbolizing the three straits of the county in which Hans Christian Anderson spun his many fairy tales including the Little Mermaid. Finally in 1868, the company was sold by the royal family to a private owner but because of the previous designation, the word "Royal" continued. For some time after 1883, the direction of the factory changed from its typical blue to experimental styles promoted by its new art director Arnold Krog. When the company, Aluminia purchased the company, it allowed its art director to work with a variety of styles and periods. Most companies stayed away from this kind of experimentation due to the fact that styles and their accompanying accotermints would change and the molds along with the creations would go either into the closet or to the dumping bins. Finally in 1889, Royal Copenhagen won the Grand Prize at the Paris Exhibition thrusting it on the world stage. In the early 70's, Royal Copenhagen acquired "George Jensen" and Bing and Grondahl in 1987. In 2012, Fiskars, a renowned Finnish company purchased the company and Royal Copenhagen is no longer made in Denmark, but in Thailland This plate has no box but is in new condition with no chips or cracks.
