Today we're going to talk about quilting patterns on our Tamarack Jackets! This is, I think, one of the most fun parts of making a Tamarack because there are so many options to choose from, the possibilities are literally endless! Before we get too carried away though I want to share a few tips you'll want to think about when deciding on a pattern for your quilting. All of these images are pulled from our Tamarack Pinterest board. Tips for Quilting your Tamarack Unless you have experience using a free motion foot or a longarm machine, straight lines are going to be the easiest option. Turning circles on a regular machine can be difficult with one layer of fabric and adding the batting won't make it easier. If you do want to do a circular pattern, the larger the curves the easier it will be! You don't have to use a machine, try hand quilting or sashiko for a really custom look. Practice quilting on a scrap quilt sandwich before you attack your actual garment. You may need to adjust your machine settings and tearing it out on your jacket is not fun, believe me. Don't be afraid to experiment a bit or step outside your comfort zone. Try a more intricate pattern on a solid color, or use a contrasting color on a print! This is a great time to have fun! We also have a post from the original sew-along called Quilting Tips for the Tamarack Jacket if you need more assistance with your quilting. I highly recommend checking it out! I put together a few quilting ideas if you're looking for inspiration. Any of these would make a great starting point or finished quilting pattern. I had to stop myself at 12 because I was having too much fun. I've also popped a blank jacket in below for you to print out and use as a template to experiment with your own quilting ideas. These 6 designs are relatively simple and would look great on a solid or print. I've used the top right and the bottom left for Tamarack samples in the past so you can see what those look like quilted in our product photos here. The less pivoting you do, the easier the quilting will be, and all of these are simply straight lines but they definitely create an impact! These 6 patterns take slightly more planning than the first 6, but that doesn't mean they're hard! There's a bit of pivoting which I would recommend practicing on a scrap quilt sandwich before you dive in, but it's really all very similar to sewing a garment - just with more fluffiness. If you're using a print, especially a large scale one like Lexi is using here, you can also quilt around the motif. On the front it doesn't distract from the print while on the inside you can really see all the quilting shine. I think this is a super cool option if your fabric is accommodating! Cubing Response: This activity allows students to respond to any type of writing. I have used it to connect a nonfiction article with a larger fictional story – like a class novel- with my students. However, you can use it in isolation also. Have students read the article of your choosing. Then, give them the directions below along with the blank cube sheet. Students complete their responses with one focus on each side of the cube. When they’re finished, they will cut the cube, fold it along the seams, and glue or tape it together. We have a class discussion about our cubing responses, and I often attach string or yarn to the cubes and hang them from the ceiling once all is said and done. It makes for a different type of class display and the students love manipulating their paper and using their hands even though it’s in language arts. From describing the text to arguing for or against it, your students will respond in a unique way to literature. Looking for more foldable ideas? Though my lingerie pattern B6031 comes with separate cup sizes (up to a D cup), you may still find yourself needing pattern adjustments if you're smaller or larger in the bust. Without further ado, here are instructions for a full bust adjustment. Read these if you're doing a small bust adjustment, since the alterations are the same, just reversed (more on that at the end of the post). 1. Start with the D cup pattern piece for your size. (I'm using the C cup in the photos below, so just ignore that). Mark in the lines shown in the picture below. 2. Slash along the lines, leaving a hinge at the top of the pattern piece. Open the slashed lines the amount you need to add to the bust. I added 1", which should gain you 1-2 cup sizes. Tape the pieces to a fresh sheet of paper. 3. Redraw the center front line. 4. Re-draw the dart legs, from their original leg points, to a new end point in your slash. Your dart will be much bigger now. When this pattern is sewn, the dart excess gets cut away, so you don't need to worry about all that excess fabric. (Another option is that you could gather the lower edge of the cup piece rather than having a dart. This is pretty common in slips.) 5. True the dart legs: close the dart as it will be sewn. Even up the bottom edge of the pattern piece if needed. Roll over the lower edge of the dart with a spiky tracing wheel. Open up the dart and draw over the perforated marks left by the tracing wheel. This is your new cutting line. 6. That's it! Test out your new cup piece in a cheap 2-way knit fabric. To get the correct fit, it's very important that your fabric for the test and the final garment stretch in the lengthwise and crosswise directions. For small bust adjustments: you can use these same steps, but instead of spreading the pattern piece apart, overlap the pieces, making it smaller. Your piece will get narrower and shorter, and your darts will be smaller. Let me know if you have any questions. Next, we'll be cutting and marking our fabric!
