Book plates are page illustrations, pictures, or photographs, that are printed separately from the text of a book, but they are bound in during production. Pre-1960’s, bookplates had no writing or images on the reverse. In order to save money by the publishers, the majority of bookplates since the 1960’s have either writing on the bookplate, usually the title of the painting, and/or writing and images on the reverse. Due to the process used for platings, bookplates retain the color, texture, and intensity of the original painting. It's about time to pull N. C. Wyeth's Pilgrims off the shelf. I get it out every Thanksgiving, even though I don't have any children around to read it to. I love to browse through it myself! It's the story of the settling of the Plymouth Colony and celebration of the first Thanksgiving, magnificently illustrated with paintings by the renowned American artist N.C. Wyeth and carefully researched text by the well known children's author Robert San Souci. It's a beautiful reminder of the bravery and determination of our forebears. It's a must have if you have children or grandchildren around for Thanksgiving, or just simply because it is a lovely little book. Get a copy this holiday season and snuggle up on the sofa with the cuties in your life...little ones, or big ones!

A lot of people will be familiar with the works of Andrew Wyeth, the famous American Painter best known for his detailed realistic portraits of the people and the land around the north-eastern States. Possibly what is less known, at least here in England is that the Wyeth family is a small dynasty of painters, Andrew being the best known. His father N. C. Wyeth was a well known artist and illustrator of derring-do childrens books. Andrew's son Jamie Wyeth has followed in his father's footsteps. I'll feature the work of all three here, starting with N. C Wyeth. Newell Convers Wyeth (1882 –1945) was the star pupil of artist the Howard Pyle and became one of America's greatest illustrators. During his lifetime, Wyeth created over 3,000 paintings and illustrated 112 books, 25 of them for Scribner's, which is the work for which he is best known. Wyeth was a realist painter just as the camera and photography began to compete with his craft. Sometimes seen as melodramatic, his illustrations were designed to be understood quickly. Wyeth, who was both a painter and an illustrator, understood the difference, and said in 1908, "Painting and illustration cannot be mixed—one cannot merge from one into the other."

Pastiche? Mash-up? The best form of flattery? Whatever you want to call it, artists have enjoyed riffing on historical paintings for ages. For some, it’s a fun way to learn and explore issues of color, composition, and application of paint by intimately copying from a master. For others, it’s a means to tap into the […]
Thumbelina is the first fairly tale I read, and its because of this illustration by N.C. Wyeth. She was so small she could tiptoe along flower stems. (by Else Wenz Vietor) Louis Reed shows here how it became cold and Thumbelina must live with a filed mouse or perish. That is how she met Mr. Mole~ who proposed......... But a swallow saved her this could be a reason I like tiny things; little houses cups and moles and squirrels I can hold in my hand. Nevertheless I like making larger things too and am at work on some If I can keep my hair from out of my eyes! (A picture from a doings at my sisters; my poor family knows I don't like to have my picture taken but somehow someone snapped me when I wasn't looking~) xx Julie listing this morning, some ornaments and cups then a day out of doors, maybe I'll see Thumbleina if I look hard enough....
