I am so thrilled to team up with one of my favorite people - Amy from Raising Arrows! Last week, Amy told me of her wonderful idea for 'Listening Pages.' I immediately knew it was a project I would love to work on. The concept of these Pages is to keep little ones engaged in the church service on Sunday mornings - from singing to the sermon to prayer. I am hosting the pages for children who are not yet reading, utilizing pictures instead of words. You'll also see a space on the side of the Page where your little one

I am always looking for new ways to encourage kids to pray, especially to get them out of the rut of talking/asking/praising about the same things. I am just as guilty of this- I tend to remember to pray for the people I care most about, immediate situations, and my needs. The bigger picture and people I don't interact with are likely to be forgotten in typical daily prayer. Then I remembered this neat technique we used in a Christian club I was in during high school. It is about using your fingers as memory tricks to help you pray for a wider variety of people. Pinky Finger- Smallest and weakest finger-Pray for the sick, dying, weak, homeless, uneducated, etc. Ring Finger- Finger that is a symbol of commitment and family- pray for those you are closest to- friends and family Middle Finger- Stands up tall- Pray for those in positions of leadership- The president, government leaders, principals, employers, etc. Pointer Finger- Points the way- Pray for those who are an example of Christian life- The Pope, bishops, priests, teachers, mentors Thumb- Closest to you- Pray for your concerns, plans, hopes, and fears So I made a coloring page to hang up as a reminder or teaching tool: Click here for the printable:

Okay, I'll admit it: I started playing Christmas music yesterday. I'm getting ready for one of my favorite family traditions. During Advent we do a Jesse Tree, with readings and ornaments from the Old Testament that lead to the birth of Christ. I've noticed my children don't always have a good sense of how the different events relate to one another. For years, I've wanted a Bible Timeline to provide a context for the stories we tell. There are several commercial ones: most have a lot of text and dates and are more involved than I need. I really like this one with all the pictures, but its 10' long! That just won't work for our home. So I obsessed over it for 48 hours, and made my own. I drew a simple cartoon history of the Old Testament. It doesn't include every prophet and king and favorite story (because otherwise it would be 10' long!), but it provides a big picture, so when you're reading your favorite story you can point and say, "this happened here." I'm hoping it will help my kids develop a sense of the continuity of the story. I drew the timeline over 5 sheets of paper, but through the magic of Adobe, I've squished it onto a single printable page. Yes, ONE page. The pictures are tiny, but they are simple and readable, so I think it works. And its for you, too! Wishing you a good Advent and blessed Nativity! Grab the printable PDF here - it includes a black and white page, and one with a little color. If you don't want the teeny-tiny version, you can order it in poster from Zazzle in various sizes and paper qualities. Its also available as this pretty 17 x 24" poster printed by Fine Art America. (Be sure to select: Size: natural.)

There are six levels of validation in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which promote an environment where people feel accepted and understood. As much as possible, we should use the highest level of validation in any given situation. The first level is about showing interest and being present while the sixth level is radical genuineness. The DBT 6 Levels Of Validation worksheet asks clients to engage in reflection and describe a scenario where validation would be helpful. For each level of validation, they can brainstorm ways to show support to a friend or loved one going through a difficult experience. Kids and teens answering the worksheet can practice articulating their responses, which helps them develop their communication skills and have healthier relationships. Feel free to pair this worksheet with our DBT 6 Levels of Validation handout which serves as a practical resource on the topic. *This item is an instant digital download.
