Disclaimer: I did not come up with this lesson. I actually remember my children’s church teacher doing this lesson for us when I was really young—like 6 or 7. And if I remember the point of the lesson (putting God first) from that long ago, it is definitely a winner. This lesson could go with […]

Continuing my series on crafts related to the Creed... (for the rest, check out the "I Believe" activities under the Sharing the Faith tab above) Highlighting the Four Marks of the Church found at the end of the Nicene Creed, I made this craft as a vehicle for dicussing how the Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. Here are some topics I would teach as I made this with kids: -One= Christ founded one Church. It was never his plan for us to break into smaller groups with differing beliefs. When He comes again, we will all be united as one. -Holy= The Church is the spotless Bride of Christ, good and holy, even though it is made up of broken and fallen people. When He comes again, the Church will enter Heaven as His Holy Bride. -Catholic= The Church is universal. Our faith is for all people of all cultures of all times. When He comes again, we will see how all encompassing the Church really is. -Apostolic= The Church is founded on the teachings of the Apostles, and continues to follow their authority today through their successors the Bishops. We are blessed to have leadership in our time by those given authority from Christ. -The Church is not a building, but is the people. We are the Church, and we make up the Body of Christ. -We believe all of these things as we say the Nicene Creed- "I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church." So, for the craft, you will need a copy of the printable (link at the bottom of the post) and one piece of black construction paper for each kid, as well as various colored scraps of paper, glue, scissors, and a circle punch if you have one. First mission: color the pieces on the printable. I chose to leave the church and "Our Church Is..." white to represent it being the spotless Bride of Christ. Then cut them out. Second mission: cut open the doors on the solid lines and fold on the dotted lines. A little trick for kids having trouble-fold the church in half length ways and clip on the line. Then open it back up and cut the rest. Here is what it looks like after that step- Third mission: lay the church in the center of the black paper and trace the opening with a white crayon. (I love finding a purpose for the neglected white crayon in my Crayola box :) ) Fourth mission: Cut or punch out circle of various colors. This is step you could do ahead of time to speed things up if you are crafting with a large group. Glue the circles inside the white rectangle. Glue the church on over the circles without gluing down the doors. Then glue on the rest of the words like this: Fifth mission: glue the "We are the Church!" and the Ephesians verse on the inside of the doors. This is to remind the kids that we, all of the people of God, are the Church, and we are one body. Sixth mission: Go share it with somebody! Here is the link to the printable:

Song: Popcorn Praise Praising The Lord No Matter What Pops Up Introduction There’s all kinds of things that happen to us in life. Sometimes good things and sometimes bad things, sometimes happy things, sometimes disappointing things, sometimes joyful things, sometimes scary things and on we could go. Each day is a day of choices and almost like popcorn they pop up to surprise us. Then comes the choice of how to react to the surprises along life’s way. Some people wake up to a tragedy that comes along. Like their house burning down or someone they love dies. We all will face some kind of hardship in our life. The most important thing through these hard times is knowing how to get through it without them changing us in a bad way. God talks about hard times throughout the bible continuously. Each bible story tells us something about facing life’s troubles. Daniel facing the lions, David facing a giant, Moses facing angry Pharaoh, Ester, taken from her home. Joseph being hated by His brothers. Paul and Silas in prison – God has given us non- stop examples of hardship and He shares with us the examples of others and their choices. Some of us may be joyful today because of some great accomplishment, or a prayer that’s been answered. Some of us may be angered inside over something someone did or didn’t do. Everyday will be a new adventure of feelings and choices. What are some of the problems you are facing today? Are you very happy over anything? Name some things God has given us in which we should be thanking him. (short time Of discussion.) God does not want us to be controlled by our feelings, but wants us to react to our feelings – by following Godly choices based on Truth. The truths we learn from God’s Word. Praise is one of the choices the bible teaches us to do through both good and bad circumstances in life. I’m not talking about the kind of praise and worship services some churches have today, but a time of personal praise spent between you and God or praise during a difficult time. God answers the prayers of praising Christians. God draws close to a person with a genuine heart of praise. God uplifts the grieving through a personal time of praise. God gives songs to those who long to praise Him. God gives joy in the place of tears to those who will praise Him. If one praises the feeling of joy soon follow. Praising the Lord encourages our heart to go on in the faith. Miracles happen in the life of a person who praises the Lord with a true heart. The devil will flee in the presence of real praise especially praises that include the shedding of Christ blood at Calvary. David gives us many examples of praise in the Psalms. David was a man of praise and praised in both good times and bad times. He praised through His problems. Paul and Silas sang and praised the Lord after being thrown in prison for the cause of Christ. Both Old and New Testament stories have taught that God reacts to praise. We need to learn to praise the Lord no matter what pops up in life. We can always tell God when we are angry, tell him when we are sad, tell him when we’ve been hurt, tell him when we’re happy, pray about things that need changed, but to be a Christian Survivor, we need to place our burden on Him and praise through life’s difficulties and by His leading take action as the Lord leads. This lesson is intended for preschool, but there are new printables here that could be used for early elementary also. Saul was not nice to the Christians. Saul was also called Paul and he grew up in Tarsus. He was a Jewish leader and was very smart. He was glad to see people being put in prison because they believed in Jesus. Saul was still following the Old Testament rules. Saul was in Jerusalem, and he went to the high priest. He wanted permission to bring back anyone that was teaching about Jesus. He wanted to make sure the Christians were in prison. Saul went from Jerusalem to Damascus. It would take Saul and the other men with him several days to arrive in Damascus. It was close to noon, and they were close to Damascus, when suddenly a light came shining around Saul from heaven. The light was brighter than the normal afternoon sun. Saul fell to the ground and Jesus said to him: “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” Saul asked, “Who are you, Lord?” And the Lord answered, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” Saul was shaking! He was amazed and asked, “What do you want me to do?” He was told to get up and go into the city and then he would be told what to do. The men that were traveling with Saul just stood there speechless! They heard someone talking but couldn’t see anyone! Saul stood up and opened his eyes, but he couldn’t see anything. The other men led him by the hand and took him to Damascus. He was there for three days. He couldn’t see and he didn’t eat or drink anything. Saul did a lot of praying. He had some time to think about what he had been doing. There was a disciple named Ananias in Damascus and the Lord came to him and told Ananias to find Saul of Tarsus on Straight Street. He is praying and waiting for you to come. Ananias replied that he has heard of Saul of Tarsus! He is putting Christians in prison. Jesus told Ananias that He has picked Saul to tell others about Him. Ananias did what Jesus told him to. He went to see Saul. He laid his hands on Saul and told him that Jesus appeared to him on the road to Damascus and sent me to give your sight back to you. Immediately something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes and he could see. Saul immediately stood up and went to be baptized. Scripture for this lesson is Acts 8:3; 9:1-19. I knew I needed to make a map for this lesson, since the kids love them. The stand-ups are great to use for review also. (Mark 1:14-22) At first glance, today's scripture appeared very simple... too simple for a game. There are a plethora of fish crafts but, we haven't played a game in a while, and I had my heart set on having an active activity this week. I read the scripture over and over trying to pick out enough details to support a game. As the week waned, I tried to talk myself into a craft anyway. But I couldn't do it. Thankfully, I awoke Saturday morning with this game idea: Supplies: Colored cardstock Scissors Sharpie Any fish drawing Bean bags (hacky sacks would work well, too) Questions (click to download) Optional: Blue plastic disposable table cloth If you do not want to draw your own fish, or have a picture you can use, you are welcome to download mine here. (Of course, this is for your private use only, and you may not sell the image or anything made from it.) Pre-class Instructions: 1. Using a copy machine or printer, copy the fish image onto 18 pieces of colored cardstock. 2. Cut out the fish. 3. Write one question on the back of each fish. Notice there are only 9 questions, but I have instructed you to cut out 18 fish. Each question will appear on two fish. This allows the game to be played in teams (each team getting their own set of questions/fish, or when there are only a few kids playing, the repetition will help them learn the correct answers.) 4. Print out the question & answer sheet in case it is needed during game play. How to play: 1. If using a blue tablecloth to mimic water, spread it on floor. 2. Spread the fish, face up, on top of the water. If not using the tablecloth, just spread the fish in a smallish area on the floor. 3. Pick a spot on the floor where the kids will stand when it is their turn. I used a rug we have in our room. I simply told them they could not step off the rug during their throw. 4. Each child gets one throw at a time. They are to toss the bean bag in an attempt to land on a fish. 5. When they land on a fish, they get to turn it over and read the question aloud. If they get the answer right, they get to keep the fish. If they do not know the answer, the fish must be returned to the sea, face up. Be sure to tell everyone the correct answer so the next time someone lands on that fish, they will know the answer. 6. The team or child with the most fish at the end of the game wins. Because the Christians were worshipping with Paul, I created an application printable about worship for preschoolers. Do's and don'ts for preschoolers. This can be used for any preschool lesson about worship. Last week Paul was in Athens. He saw all the idols in the city that the people were worshipping. God said to only worship Him. Paul went to the middle of the city to a place called Mars Hill. He spoke to the people and said he had seen the idol to the unknown god. Paul told them about God, the One True God. The God that created heaven and earth. Paul and some other Christians sailed to Troas. They were there seven days, and on the first day of the week, which is Sunday, the Christians assembled together to worship and take communion, just as Jesus commanded them to. Paul was planning to leave the next day, so he preached all day. He preached until midnight! Another part of worship that Jesus told us to do, on the first day of the week, is preaching. Since it was dark, the people had a lot of lamps lit. They were together in an upper room on the third floor. There was a young man named Eutychus in the room with them. He started to fall asleep, and he went into a deep sleep! He fell asleep and while Paul kept preaching, he fell out of the window! He fell from the third floor and died. Paul went down to him and fell on Eutychus. Paul held him and told everyone “Don’t worry! He is alive!” Paul did a miracle and Eutychus lived! The people went back to the upper room and ate and talked until the sun rose. When Paul left, the people were thankful that Paul had brought Eutychus back to life. They were thankful that they had gotten to spend time listening to Paul preach and to learn more about Jesus. Today's lesson is in Acts 20:7-12. To continue the concept of worship with the students, I created this booklet. There are direction included, but after printing the church building and cutting two lines out, the 'door' of the building will open and you can discuss ways for preschoolers to act during worship. The booklet is in color and black & white (though I didn't like how some of the graphics look for the black & white.) If you don't like to print 3 pages for each student, just print one and use it for a teacher's visual for application. You can print a picture to color below for take home. Click here to print. This can be used for any lesson about worship. I did not put anything about Eutychus in it. Also, a teacher's visual can be made to keep with your supplies to use when you have extra time. It is a good discussion starter. Click here to print the lesson. Click here to download the visuals. All are not shown. These include all visuals for Acts 20. Click here to download the pictures to color. (These are the same as the visuals but are black & white.) Click here to see the lesson for early elementary ages.
