Mindfulness practice helps kids develop a sense of calm, self-awareness, & emotional regulation; a holistic life skill that promotes mental & physical health.
Urge surfing involves mindfully noticing and “riding out” urges as they rise and fall in intensity until they eventually subside. Urge surfing with mindfulness has helped break unhealthy habits like binge eating and other addictive behaviors. Practicing this skill does not automatically reduce urges, but it changes how we respond, leading to self-control and mastery in overcoming them. The Urge Surfing DBT Worksheets feature three worksheet activities for clients to answer questions about the skill. Through these activities, they get a chance to reflect on their triggers, the thoughts and sensations they have, how they handled the urge, and what they can do better next time. Using these worksheets helps kids and teens learn to accept an urge and its accompanying discomfort, which can lead to better self-control. When used in individual or group discussions, you can start by introducing the concept of urge surfing. There are six levels of validation in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which promote an environment where people feel accepted and understood. As much as possible, we should use the highest level of validation in any given situation. The first level is about showing interest and being present while the sixth level is radical genuineness. The DBT 6 Levels Of Validation worksheet asks clients to engage in reflection and describe a scenario where validation would be helpful. For each level of validation, they can brainstorm ways to show support to a friend or loved one going through a difficult experience. Kids and teens answering the worksheet can practice articulating their responses, which helps them develop their communication skills and have healthier relationships.
