We are seeing so few birds and so few species at the moment, when we go on our birding walks. There are no cones on many of the coniferous trees, meaning that there will be no food for birds such as Crossbills this winter, and birds such as Redpolls will be either non-existant or very low in numbers. It's not expected to be a good winter for Snowy Owls, either. That's why I say "Thank heavens for Chickadees"!! They are there to greet us, no matter what! Such tough little guys, though they are always only 24 hours away from death if they can't get enough fat stored into their body to last overnight. This was a lucky shot, taken through the snow-laden trees somewhere between Bebo Grove and Shannon Terrace in Fish Creek Park, on 29 October 2013. It makes you wonder what kind of numbers will be recorded for each species during the upcoming Christmas Bird Counts, within the city, but especially in surrounding areas such as High River, Drumheller and Cochrane. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black-capped_Chickadee www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Black-Capped_Chickadee/id SNOWFALL WARNING in effect for central and southern Alberta - heavy snow for us this weekend! Wonder what we will all wake up to tomorrow morning.

i recently came across this fabulous little birdie how-to over at non dairy diary, and i was so inspired that i declared that very moment "play time"! start by painting some watercolor splotches on your paper...... and then outline them with a permanent marker. add eyes, a beak, and all those other birdie things...... and you have a nice little flock of chickadees! but why stop there? somewhere in those watercolor blobs there might also be some piggies..... and mousies..... and bunnies......oh, my! cyberspace is jam-packed with spectacular ideas...... let inspiration and a little play help you to put your own spin on them!! (and i figure if you're having lots of fun, you're on the right track!) click here for non dairy diary's tutorial! {i used these supplies to create this little barnyard: koi watercolors, micron pens, 2B pencil, waterbrush, sumi brush, strathmore 400 series w/c paper}
Taken yesterday on a quick stop at Sikome, Fish Creek Park. This little Black-capped Chickadee was maybe 5' away from me.

…In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back. - quote by Albert Camus None of these pictures...
In the summer I love waking up to the sound of these happy little birds. This time of year they're still asleep when I leave the house. However, the days are getting longer.... Chestnut-backed chickadee, backyard Olympia.

Chickadees are fun to watch as they dart and play nervously among the branches of a tree or shrub. The only problem is that they move so fast it can be hard to get a good look at them. chick-a-dee-dee-dee-dee.... 2 ¾” x 4 ¾” 9" x 11" framed SOLD www.chursinoff.com/kirsten/
