Welcome to a crafty edition of The Cherry On Top. I've got that top hat I promised and this one was designed totally in a traditional scrap fashion. I'm providing you with a step by step tutorial, a hit up of the hybrid hat and the free template so you can make one yourself. Let's take a look at the materials you will need. rigid paper template scissors glue/glue dots double sided tape tape embellishments Cut out your template as shown below. There are a couple methods of applying the top of the hat. If you want to just use the circle, then you don't have to cut out all of the squares around it. The same goes for the bottom of the hat, but using the teeth for the bottom/brim will add stability and strength. Here's one of the methods to apply the top of the hat to the middle of the hat. I had difficulty doing it this way when it came to adding it to the bottom of the hat. I couldn't always get it just right. I traced around my templates on to my paper. Then cut them out. Put the teeth in place by popping them up then fit the middle of the hat so it lines up nicely with the teeth. I used tape on the inside to hold it in place where it fit. Then used double sided tape on the seem to close it up. If you are going to use rigid paper, then you might want to consider using tiny glue dots on your teeth, like shown below. Glue is more forgiving, but it takes a while to dry and you might find your teeth popping off the inside of the hat. I used a scissors to get in there and apply each tooth. It isn't a huge deal if a few teeth don't stick. I found the glue dots to work really well and I didn't have to go back and keep applying the teeth to the inside of the hat. However, if you are using regular, light weight paper, I would consider glue. It works easier and there is more room for mistakes. Otherwise, you might tear your paper. Some of the time, my teeth on the top of the hat just didn't fit right. If you are using riding paper and you fin that you also can't get the fit just right, simply use the inside circle of the hat. I used glue around the outside edge of the inside of the top of the hat and dropped it on the middle of the hat. Then I placed this very light ribbon spool on the top until the glue dried. The top was just a tad bit too big so I snipped around the edges slowly and carefully with small, precise scissors. Choose a band for your hat. I went with the antique looking gold and inked around the edges in black. Take a look at your band and make sure none of the white around the edges is showing from where you cut. I didn't do that! Apply the band with double sided tape, glue gun or glue if yu are working with light weight paper. I had this awesome embellishing from Webster's Moments, but it was a bit too long, so I snipped off a bit at the tips. To fix my problem with the white exposed around the edge of my band, I used some black eyeshadow. The effect was even better than the ink! I used a really narrow glue edge type of double sided tape to adhere my ribbon. That way I didn't have to wait for the glue to try. I get so darn impatient with this part. Hehehe...I just want to decorate it and make it pretty, ASAP! Hehehe... To cover up the line going down the back of the hat, I used these tiny gold dots with tiny glue dots on the back to adhere. It adds a nice touch to your look. Add a couple of flowers, greenery, beads, pearls, pins whatever you choose. I used this beaded pin and three paper flowers, twirled the green wire into this shape. That's it! This is the back of the hat. I left the front plain. With the band and the ribbon it looked great. I do display it this way, though. Here's another paper hat I made. I used a cereal box for some serous rigidity and papered over it with Graphic 45 lovelies. I pimped this sucker way up! Hehehe...Click on the image to see more about this project. Welcome to The Cherry On Top. We're continuing a project we started last weekend. I've also got a free template on hybrid Saturday's blog. It's in png format so you can use it digitally, traditionally and hybrid style. Click on the image to get to the blog for the download. I'm just uploading a little video on how to get the perfectly cropped pics for in your pockets. It only took me a couple of minutes with PSE. If you need the template for the pics follow these directions: 1) download the free template pictured here 2) open the template in your scrappy program 3) crop the style of card you want, rounded edges or typcial 4) shrink your card of choice just slightly 5) double check that the insert will fit by placing it over the original template These are what I made. I've got the finished result down a bit further. You can use these for so many things. I've made a mini for my mom. You can put them in your agendas and or planners to store goodies if you leave a bit of space on one side. It's also the perfect size of a door hanger. Cut out a big hole at top center and you're set. Here's the rest of the tutorial for you. We left off where you needed to just finish up your project with pics and our favourite part, embellishing! There's my photos, perfectly cropped and printed thanks to the video and previous tutorial. Are you like me and try to scrimp and scrape every scrap possible? I have very limited supplies and no shops around to buy lovely scrapbooking and paper products for projects so I have to be resourceful as possible. I fit all of my photos on some left over, black card stock that a friend brought for me from the States. Use your paper cutter and if you like, your corner punch to round the edges of your matting. Most of my book has a black outline so black matting seemed most appropriate. Check it out first and make sure your matting goes with your photos. I got so lucky to find such a perfectly matching, old paper in my stash. These are just discount store goodies and they are pretty terrible, quality wise, but when that's all you can get...Make do with you have, right? It doesn't have to cost a fortune to be pretty and if you use your own "good" adhesive, it'll be fine. See how I cut out a flower and a leaf from paper. Of course, I tried to get a flower as close to the edge as possible. Hehehe... Trying to save that paper. I inked around the edge of my flower and leaf so it matches the rest and gives a touch of contrast to my background paper. A nice gem in the middle of my flower and a few of those nifty clear dots along the bottom of my photo. The paper is already pretty busy so I didn't feel the need to over embellish. Like I would EVER over embellish?! Hehehe... I'm going to be totally honest with you...I didn't mean to put the holes in the center of my backing. I wanted to put holes in the center of my photos and I thought it looked totally redundant to do both. Ha! My original plan was to punch holes in the corner of the backing, not the center, but it looks totally ok, right? Hehehe... I might have been able to embellish over the holes, but meh. This is ok. There's my book all finished. I want to send it through the mail, so I don't want to put too many goodies on there. I'm pretty sure my mom is mostly concerned with the photos, after all. Always consider who is receiving the gift and how much they will appreciate your efforts, if you care that is. There is the other side. There's more space for more photos and perhaps a touch of journaling, too. You could even turn your matted photos into pockets if you needed more space. If you don't know much about Project Life, we got a few blogs here with Project Life pages. Check it out on Pinterest and I'll show ya a couple of things you can get at a great shop like Scrapbook.com. You get a book similar to a traditional 12x12, like the one pictured here. You can use sleeves similar to these pictured here and use purchased or hand made cards and your photos to go to into the small sleeves. Here's an example of what some purchased cards look like. I like the standardisation in Project Life, but once you start looking around, you'll see that it really is quite limitless with what you can do. I'll be blogging again about different ways to use Project Life cards. Ever since I designed a few and printed them out, I really start liking project life. I do think it's a mega easy way to scrap, if you just wanna scrap fast and don't care about all of those embellishments, but you totally can take Project Life to stunning, artistic levels. Welcome to The Cherry On Top! We couldn't wait to bring this fun, easy, fast and low cost paper project to you. Seriously, the laminate is still warm as I'm typing. Hehehe...This project can be made within an hour and you only need a couple of materials. We wanted a place where you could put all of our recipe cards and keep them handy or give them as a gift. (Scroll down to the bottom to get the free recipe cards.) We designed this rigid, stand alone apron with pocket to hold your recipes. You can also hang it up and/or it will stack nicely with your other recipes, too. Materials Needed: printable scissors recipes printed in a small format to fit in pocket (around 4") thinnest, double sided tape or glue buttons 2x ribbon approximately 4" glue dots, gun or adhesive *laminator Down load the template at the bottom of the page. You can simply print it right out from here or you can click on the image and download or download the tif version available at app box also for free and design your apron like we did here with your favourite digital stash. I used my go to kit from Just So Scrappy, With A Cherry On Top. Isn't it absolutely fabulous? It's an older kit, but I use it all of the time. Click on the image to get a closer look and see more goodies in this line. It's available at the Digital Scrapbooking Studio. Tip: Make sure when you print you get it just the size you need. This template worked just perfect. Hopefully, you won't have to make adjustments. You may want to ink around the edges of your apron. As you can see I made two cut outs so I can stand it up like a book. You won't need two if you are going to hang it. For edging, simply take an ink pad and wipe around the edges. It will give a more finished feel to your projects. I inked around both. Laminate both of your pieces separately and your recipe cards. This will add to the durability, you won't have to use card stock and it's ok if it gets wet. Carefully cut around all of your laminate. Do not cut into the paper, just before it. Play with your pocket placement before adhering so you get in the right spot. You may choose to make a small mark to get it right in the centre. I used that super thin double sided tape on the three, outside edges of the pocket, leaving the top open and getting as close as possible to the edge so that there is maximum room in the pocket for your recipes. Adhere the two apron cutouts at the top of the apron. I used the thin double sided tape. Look carefully and you'll see how I applied a large, flat glue dot right on to the button to adhere the ribbon. This makes the alignment perfect and it's so easy, right?! You may also choose to cut around the paper of your glue dot so you don't have to drag the entire roll. This makes for much better accuracy. Put another glue dot right over the top of the end of your ribbon so that the ribbon will be sandwiched in between the two glue dots. Place your button on top of each glue dot, covering the end of the ribbon. You're finished! This card is so sturdy, it stood up no problem with this spoon against it. You may insert your recipe cards as shown here or you can insert them horizontally as well. They fit both ways. You could go a tab bit larger with your recipe cards if you put them in vertically. Hanging your apron is also an option. (Then you will not need two cut outs.) Ooh! Hang it on a bottle of wine and use it as a tag. Of course you could print the template out small and use them as a tag. You could sew around the edges, too. Customise until your heart is content with ribbon, stitches, buttons, flowers, fabric... Here is the template. Simply adjust the size as you wish, print and cut it out or use the tiff version with the link provided to insert your paper/background of your choice and digital elements. I also want to show you what you a bit from yesterdays blog, because it's mega awesome and I thought of a nifty idea with what you can do with our free Project Life cards from yesterday. I'm providing you with a free template, just incase you can use it. This project can be done totally traditionally and or hybrid style. You choose! Ya gotta love choices. How about these fabulous colours?! I just love it on my youthful page with my youngest son. The templates are new and from Made By Keuntje. JJ went to the zoo with his dad a few weeks ago and was in 7th heaven. He went twice with his school, but never got to go where he wanted to go and they never stayed very long. So he missed a lot. This time my hubs let him be in charge and they were there for over 5 hours. Now, for my idea on an alternative use for these or any Project Life cards you have in your scrappy stash whether it be digital or traditional. I've designed this template in both straight edge and cornered in case you need it. Click on the image or below it to get the free png template. I've put it in png so you can use it digitally, with your cutting machines or traditionally. click here for the download Here's the start of my project. You'll get the idea and you can go from there. I'll finish up the project and get it in our Traditional Tuesday spot. I went through my card stock stash, looking for coordinating papers to go with my new, free Project Life cards. I was pretty impressed with my find. Hehehe.. I thought I'd show you what I got together. I matched as closely as I could, the colours from the cards. There are three different ways you can go about with the basis of this project. 1) use your cutting machine with our pngs and your paper choice 2) trace around our templates, once you've downloaded them and printed them out 3) keep your lines straight, use your paper cutter and use a corner punch for a perfect cut Tah, dah! There is the base of your page. I've inked around my card and my background paper. I like the black contrast. I used my slimmest double sided tape for around THREE edges of my card to create a pocket. I plan on inserting pictures into the pockets and using ribbon to pull and push the photos in and out of the pocket. You see where this is going...Decide on how you want to bind them or other ways you can use them. If you followed our tutorial on how to make your own journal or agenda, these will totally fit in there. I would adhere your new pocket page onto another larger paper, repeat your inking process, leaving enough room for your holes, to make an insert in your journal/agenda. I've got how to do this in the original tutorial, too. I'll make a cover to fit over these new pocket pages and more than likely bind them in the corner with a hole punch and a ring, like I did the journal you see here. Here are a couple of items that you can purchase on line that will help you with this and many other craft projects you have in mind. I love this mixed set of metal rings. Welcome to The Cherry On Top. I am going to TRY and start blogging traditional type of scrap projects every Wednesday. I work mostly with digital goodies and have branched out into hybrid, but when I get behind my crafting table and see all of these amazing goodies well, they are just going to waste and I love getting my hands sticky and glittery. Hehehe... I don't have any scrap projects finished that I haven't blogged already. I'm showing off a project that is nearly finished. I'll do it in two parts which will keep the blog a bit shorter, give you more than enough inspiration and I'll share all kinds of tips and techniques that will help make scrapping easier for you. The next part will be these pages, plus a couple more, the photos and the cover of the mini. I may also have a nifty gifty for you, too. So, make sure you stop back for that. Here is a look at Maya Road's purse that I am using. It is very, very rigid. I also noted that it wasn't in their shop any more. Bummer! But that's ok! We've got a lot of other fantastic substitutions you can find at the bottom of this entry. Let's get a close up look at these tiny pages. I may kick myself in the rear for making all of these pages without having my photos, but I'm still waiting for those pictures from my mom. I want to make an album for my aunt, but I don't have any pictures. She's a scrappy sister, too. So, I know she will appreciate all of the work I put into this mini album. Most of the materials for this album are from Webster's Pages warehouse sale boxes. I bought two and wow oh man do you get a lot of stuff in there! I can scrap for ages with all of the materials. Papers, stickers, shaped papers, journal cards, embellishments like ribbons, mesh, flowers, pins... I was very imressd with the contents and all for $30 + shipping. I know for sure, I am not alone when it comes to not wanting to use, "the good stuff", but how silly is that?! I sucked it up and I'm using ALL of the "good stuff". My aunt is worth it and I want this project to be sensational. This layout above is from one small sheet from the warehouse box. Then I cut out that bottom arrangement and adhere it to my paper with the pretty scalloped valance. I used the images from the packaging, as usual for the butterfly and the bird cage. Tip: I gave the butterfly a dimensional effect by simply folding up the wings and adhering it to my page with a tiny sliver of foam tape. Then added the three Sticky Dots to match the row of dots at the top for more cohesion across the page. Tip: I also left the bottom cluster loose at the top so I could slide a photo under. A page like that is made in just a few minutes, while this bottom one took some time. I used more Sticky Dots, cut out the top part of the kite paper, then cut a sliver of that coordinating pink paper and then the lovely strand of pearls. I used the bike image from the packaging and blinged it up with clear glitter glue. I used different colours for the dangling ribbons and for the flowers. I cut the kites out of a journal card and also added the same coloured glitter glue to them so that it all goes nicely together. Shoo! Something I totally have a problem getting the positioning just right. I should have done a couple of pages upside down so when you flip the pages, you're not looking at an upside down image. A page like this came in handy. It doesn't matter which way you put it and it comes out ok. Here's an obvious mistake. I thought I had fixed it by covering up the upside down word art and then I realised my backgournd paper was also upside down. Duh! Hehehe...That is just so me. Far from perfect. This page is pretty simple, but I just love the way it turned out. Webster's Pages has such lovely, timeless papers. I layered up a fw coordinating papers, used some of their word art and lace from the box and added just a few of my own goodies in the form of that pink flower and the gems. All purchased at discount stores. Belgium does not have the awesome craft stores like in the States. If you know of one, hook a sister up, will ya?! I really love this page! Matching up the papers from Webster's and using more goodies from the box. Inked around their flower and added one of my own for a finishing touch. I just did this page, today. These little 6x6 papers are great for this kind of mini. Tip: Find a paper with a nice corner cluster like the one shown here and half of the work is finished. I cut out those two circles from another 6x6 paper and inked around the edge in a coordinating colour, added one of my own flowers and BAM! Finished in minutes. Another paper with a beautiful corner cluster and a cut out from another. Add some more Sticky Dots and shimmer and Ooh La La...Peprika! Another layout made in minutes. I did this page today, too. I grabbed a couple of yellow papers going for the nearly monochromatic look and found this nice green with the same yellow in it. Tied some more matching string, added the mandatory bling and these two tiny flowers topped off with more matching gems. Tip: I was very careful to use words and sayings that are very generalised because I have no idea what kind of pictures I am going to use. These two pages will look great next to each other with the mimicking air balloons. I'll do my best to have this ready for next week. Just two more pages and the cover. I found some neat examples with the same purse as well as some others since it may be difficult getting this book. No worries, though. This is a fun and engaging unit to practice articulating /ch/ and /sh/ in all positions of words (initial, medial, and final).
