Have you ever heard of foot shape genealogy? It is a concept out of the 19th century that still has some adherents today. It is based on the belief that the shape of your foot can tell you one of five ancient ethnic groups to which your ancestors belonged. Here is what you need to know about it.

I've attended a lot of meetings during my career, many of which I would have benefited from a from a more graphic version of the bell curve.
This resource includes 37 personal anchor charts and 37 full-page anchor charts that are designed to directly align with the 3rd Grade Common Core State Standards for Language. Each page of the personal anchor chart file contains two copies of each anchor chart. Simply cut them in half and each of your students can glue an anchor chart into his or her personal language notebook. Then, students can refer to the anchor charts throughout the school year as needed. Most of the anchor charts contain an interactive element, allowing students to apply the knowledge that is presented on each anchor chart. I designed the full-page color anchor chart file primarily for teacher use. You can place these anchor charts beneath your document camera and guide your students in filling out their personal anchor charts. You may also choose to display this version in your classroom. If you're a fan of anchor charts, but you aren't sure how to keep them on display for the students who need them, here's a very easy solution! Once the anchor charts are glued into an interactive notebook, they are easily accessible for the remainder of the school year! The personal anchor charts are black and white, while the full-page anchor chart uses color clip art. These 37 anchor charts are included: *Nouns *Pronouns *Verbs *Adjectives *Adverbs *Regular Plural Nouns *Irregular Plural Nouns *Abstract Nouns *Simple Verb Tenses *Regular Past-Tense Verbs *Irregular Past-Tense Verbs *Subject-Verb Agreement *Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement *Comparative and Superlative Adjectives & Adverbs *Conjunctions *Simple Sentences (Subjects & Predicates) *Compound Sentences *Complex Sentences *Writing Titles *Commas in Addresses *Writing Dialogue *Singular Possessives *Plural Possessives *Spelling Rules & Generalizations *Dictionary Skills: Guide Words *Word Choice *Spoken English vs. Written English *Context Clues *Prefixes *Suffixes *Using Roots to Identify New Words *Using the Dictionary *Idioms *Real-life Word Connections *Shades of Meaning *Spatial & Temporal Words & Phrases Here's what other teachers and parents say about using these personal anchor charts: ⭐️ Denise W. said, "My students love these anchor charts and so do I!" ⭐️ Eloy H. said, "This was great to use in our interactive journals. They provided great examples and are a great reference." ⭐️ Toni B. said, "Very helpful resource for my students to refer back to when they forget a grammar rule." ⭐️ Kimberly H. said, "This resource is great! I am using this over the course of the year to introduce the concepts to my son and then later individually teach him." ⭐️ Nicole said, "My students were very engaged when using this resource. Great resource for student achievement!" ⭐️ Jenilee T. said, "I love using these anchor charts in my classroom as well as having a matching student anchor chart for their interactive journals!" Many of these personal anchor charts are reflections of the main points that I have highlighted in various language PowerPoints. In my opinion, it is not necessary that you own each of my matching PowerPoints. I believe that the content included on these anchor charts are key elements that most 3rd grade teachers will teach when covering these topics. However, many of the graphic elements are shared between the PowerPoints and the posters. Therefore, if you DO choose to use both the PowerPoints and the posters, your students will be able to easily notice the direct connection between the classroom PowerPoint activity and the matching reference tool that they are gluing in their notebook. CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW to get a good feel for what you will get if you choose to purchase this resource. More than half of the anchor charts are shown in the preview! I was talking about this book with a colleague the other day. More like singing its praises. It was then that I thought I needed to share this resource with my blog friends. If you teach intermediate grade writers, YOU WANT THIS BOOK! The title of this gem is Razzle Dazzle Writing: Achieving Excellence Through 50 Target Skills by Melissa Forney. I love this book! It is so on-target with the skills it covers and so appropriate for intermediate grade writers. This book is perfect for 3rd grade through middle school. If I don't tell you another thing about it, you should just go buy the book because it is selling on Amazon.com for a very cheap $13.57! Honestly, I would quickly pay at least twice that for this book without blinking. Ms. Forney also has a sister book for the K-2 set called Primary Pizzazz Writing. I haven't seen it in person, but it looks like a winner. The pages of Razzle Dazzle Writing are meant to be copied for your friends and used as a teaching and reference tool. Here is a checklist from the book that notes the 50 skills covered: As you can see, the topic lend themselves to your everyday teaching throughout the year. However, this book is also great for test prep. Ugghhhh! I hate to even utter those words, but they are a fact of life for us these days. Let me be clear though that Ms. Forney is very clear in the book that it's not all about the writing prompt. She does state that our friends need to know the difference between prompted writing and free writing. I also believe this. As much as we would like our friends to embrace writing and freely write as they are inspired, the reality is when the state test comes they are going to be directed via a prompt to do a very specific type of writing. I used the mini lessons in this book to create an anchor chart on understanding the different types of prompts: And, here is another chart I created using one of Melissa Forney's lessons on using a "writing glove" to help your friends properly address narrative prompts. Sigh! Just noticed that I spelled dilemma incorrectly on the chart. Will be fixing that in class ASAP. Sorry about that! Ms. Forney has great ideas for this mini lesson. The book even includes reproducible gloves for your friends to cut out and put on a stick. The creation of these two anchor charts is directly inspired, if not copied, right from Razzle Dazzle Writing. I tweaked a bit for my friends, but the book is so well put together you can essentially photocopy what you need and do your lesson with minimal prep. Razzle Dazzle Writing includes tons of pages you can copy for your friends to keep as reference, there are also poems and reader's theater scripts that are included to reinforce many of the lessons. The poems are fun and easily understandable for your friends. The reader's theater scripts get right to the point in a fun way , yet they are short enough to be done as part of a mini lesson. I have yet to find anything in this book that isn't a perfect fit for my friends. Melissa Forney has an incredible web site where you can learn more about her books and philosophy. Click HERE to be taken to Forney Educational, Inc. There are also free downloads available on the site. THIS PDF DOWNLOAD is for a booklet titled Young Writer's Survival Guide. It is an excellent resource for your friends. Many of the topics in this guide are topics covered in more depth as different mini lessons in Razzle Dazzle Writing. That PDF alone should convince you to buy the book! So, have I gushed enough? I hope so! This is not a paid endorsement. This is a post on a book that I find myself going back to again and again and think you will, too. If you know this book, please share your thoughts. If you end up getting this book, let us know how you like it. On a totally different topic, every time I think of the name of this book, it makes me think of this scene from the movie Stripes with Bill Murray. I know, totally dating myself yet again! Also, don't forget to enter my giveaway to win a copy of Testing Miss Malarkey and assorted other goodies!
My new obsession this year has been making and using anchor charts for my lessons. Here are just some of the anchor charts I have made this year. Some of these charts are original ideas but many are ideas I have seen and used from other teachers. I am not good at drawing so I use clipart from my computer to add pictures to my anchor charts. I print them out and glue them onto the chart! It’s so much easier and looks so much better than what I could draw! I also laminate my anchor charts so I can use them year to year. By laminating the charts I can easily write and erase on them by using an Expo marker. How do you get all your students to write during their free time!?! Give them the choice to WRITE ABOUT THEIR FRIENDS! While I sent home the parent letter pictured above, I gave my students the option to write about me! I am so PROUD of all their writing. I wish I could post them all! Everyday my students can't wait to SHARE what FRIEND he/she wrote about. They even LOVE to write about themselves! "KID WRITING" just makes my heart SMILE! I created some booklets for my students to write about their friends. It is AMAZING how much more they learned about FRIENDS in the classroom! This unit works very well at the end-of-the-school year in kindergarten, but can also be used at any time your students need another ENGAGING writing activity. If you are interested in adding some FUN into your writing day, you can check out this resource by CLICKING RIGHT HERE!

Here are some random ideas from the past few weeks.... So, I have a REALLY challenging bunch of firsties. Lots of behaviour issues, so we spend a lot of time practicing behaviours and expectations. One thing we did this week is talk about being a good listener. I read this book: Then I showed the students this picture of a student. I got the clipart from here, put the image on my projector, and traced/coloured it. I asked the students what they noticed about this boy and how was he being a good listener at the carpet. I taped the cards to the poster as the students noticed those things. One student said his brain was thinking about what was going on. I thought that was super cute so I added it to my list of cards! If you would like the labels you can download them here. I keep this poster by the carpet area all the time so I can refer back to it everyday! Today was our school-wide Terry Fox Run (for all you Canadian followers). My little ones did really good with the 45 minute walk to the park. They were a TEENSY bit tired on the way back though! Yesterday we talked about who Terry Fox was and why we do the run every year. There is a really good video about Terry Fox on YouTube. Click the picture for the link! I found this sneaker activity on Scholastic (download here). We each decorated a sneaker and cut them out to show our support for the Terry Fox Run. They look pretty good up there all together! I loved this management idea from First Grade Glitter and Giggles. My first graders are always asking "Can I use markers?" or "What do I do first?" I have a label for all the supplies we use and put them up in order of which supplies I want them to use first. Feel free to download the label cards here. Just laminate and stick some magnetic tape on the back! American spelling of "color" can be downloaded {here}. Here is another behaviour management ideas... I had A LOT of tattling going on the first few weeks. So I read the book "How to Be a Friend" by Laurie Krasny Brown and Marc Brown. We talked about ways to be a friend and ways to NOT be a friend. We did some role playing with some common conflicts (name calling, not sharing, cutting in line, etc.) Then we talked about the plan: 1. Stop what is going on. 2. Talk about the problem. "I don't like it when you _______." 3. Fix it! Download the pictures and signs here. All I need to do now is say, "Stop, Talk, Fix!" and they know that they have to try and solve their own conflict! Well, that's all I have for tonight! To come tomorrow.... Math Stations - Set 1! Good night, everybody!
