This worksheet provides an in-depth introduction to the ‘fool’ stock character of Shakespeare’s plays, with a particular focus on Polonius as a typical fool character in Hamlet. The worksheet focuses on Act 2, Scenes 1-2, in which Polonius plays an important role. I usually teach this tragedy as an IB English A: Literature or Language & Literature Higher Level Text, but it can be seamlessly integrated into any upper school / high school curriculum. The handout provides: Comprehension & close reading questions for Act 2, Scenes 1 + 2. Introduction and definition of ‘the fool’ as a stock Shakespearean character. Close-reading and analysis activities, with select extracts and accompanying analysis from Act 2 of the play. MODEL ANSWERS for the comprehension + close reading questions and for the close-reading & extracts analysis questions. PS: I’ll be teaching this unit very soon, and so this is very much a work in progress / will mean that I update my other Hamlet resources. Should anything not be a expected, do let me know via email rather than leaving a bad review. Enjoy, and feedback is welcome!
