If you teach preschool, transitional kindergarten (also known as TK or junior kindergarten), or kindergarten then this bilingual homework folder cover sheet might be for you! I created these sheets as a custom request by my dear friends Linda Veik and Susan Lopez, both kindergarten teachers in Fontana, CA. Updated 7/21/2016 Special thanks to Yaileen Nieves for reaching out to me on Instagram and asking if I would translate this resource into Spanish. Absolutely! With teamwork from Yaileen, you will find the alphabet corresponds to words in Spanish. The letter Gg for instance shows a "gato" and the letter Vv shows a "vaca." Thank you, Yaileen! Thank you, thank you, thank you! :) UPDATED 10-1-18 Please re-download. I have freshened up the fonts and clip art. There are now SEVERAL different options, including some with coin images for penny, nickel, dime, and quarter as well as math symbols for plus, minus, greater than, and less than. UPDATED 7-8-19 Someone pointed out that one of the Spanish pages had the number words in English and another person pointed out that the word December was spelled incorrectly on some of the Spanish pages. Ack! Thank you to those ladies! Both issues have been corrected. Please re-download and use the updated sheets. Have a great year!! :D UPDATED 8-20-19 Yikes! Special thanks to Vanessa for reaching out to me to correct the addition, subtraction, greater than, less than, and coin words on the Spanish versions of this Freebie. Please re-download! Thank you again! <3 UPDATED 1-4-22 It was brought to my attention that the little boy clipart I used for the month of May was insensitive. This was certainly NOT my intent. As a former teacher in a district with over 90% English Language Learners, many who dressed in traditional attire to celebrate cinco de mayo, I did not think it would be found offensive... I apologize if you, your students, or their parents found it as such. In order to avoid future issues, I have changed it to a garden gnome with flower because "April showers bring May flowers." I also updated the Spanish word for orange as I was not aware I was using the term for the fruit rather than the color. It now correctly reads "anaranjado." I want to thank the person who pointed that at out and extended me a little grace as I am not a native Spanish speaker. <3 Please re-download. Thank you! What's Included? * Several different options for use as a Homework Folder Cover Sheet (ENGLISH and SPANISH). ** Option One: Has a school monster on it. The alphabet is slightly smaller on this version. ** Option Two: No school monster. The alphabet is slightly larger on this version. *** Option Three: Cute kids (original simplified style) What information is on the sheet? * A primary dotted line for you to write your student's name * Letters Aa-Zz with pictures and words for each, most are easy-to-read CVC words (exceptions are the vowels, which begin with a short vowel sound: ant, egg, ill, ox, up and also excluding Qq which shows a quilt and X which shows an x-ray). * Months of the Year * Days of the Week * Numbers 1-20, shown with ten frames and with the word and number word * Colors and Shapes - basic shapes are: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, hexagon, and oval. 3D solid shapes are: cube, cylinder, sphere, cone, and rectangular prism. * Added 8-15-18 - coins: penny, nickel, dime, and quarter - each showing the coin name, heads/front, and back/tails image of each coin as well as the value or worth of each coin. * Added 8-15-18 - math symbols or signs with a fun mustache theme: plus sign, minus sign, greater than, and less than. How do I use these? * Print (be sure to select "SHRINK OVERSIZE PAGES" or "SHRINK TO FIT PAGE" so as to not cut off the page borders), * Write student names on the lines using permanent marker, * Paste onto the front cover of your folders using a glue stick, * Add other useful info for them on the inside pockets of the folder and in the back of the pockets if you wish prior to the next step, * Laminate folders (Folders should be open when feeding through the laminator), * Use a razor blade to cut slits on the inside to make the pockets usable. Note: You may also wish to paste other types of sheets on to the inside pockets and/or back cover before laminating. The ones pictured on the cover have a sight word list laminated on the back cover. Don't want to mess with laminating? You may instead choose to buy pronged folders or binders and slip into a page protector. Or purchase folders with a clear pocket on the front and back and slip into the pocket. Feedback and follows are GREATLY appreciated! This took about two hours to complete from start to finish (that was for the original cover! The newer covers added LOTS OF TIME and were a labor of love) and feedback and follows really make it worth my time so please take a moment if you would. I enjoy reading and replying to each piece of feedback I receive. Have a GREAT school year and thank you! Karen :)
No school district can be all charismatic leaders and super-teachers. It can't start from scratch, and it can't fire all its teachers and principals when students do poorly. Great charter schools can only serve a tiny minority of students. Whether we like it or not, most of our youngsters will continue to be educated in mainstream public schools. The good news, as David L. Kirp reveals in Improbable Scholars, is that there's a sensible way to rebuild public education and close the achievement gap for all students. Indeed, this is precisely what's happening in a most unlikely place: Union City, New Jersey, a poor, crowded Latino community just across the Hudson from Manhattan. The school district--once one of the worst in the state--has ignored trendy reforms in favor of proven game-changers like quality early education, a word-soaked curriculum, and hands-on help for teachers. When beneficial new strategies have emerged, like using sophisticated data-crunching to generate pinpoint assessments to help individual students, they have been folded into the mix. The results demand that we take notice--from third grade through high school, Union City scores on the high-stakes state tests approximate the statewide average. In other words, these inner-city kids are achieving just as much as their suburban cousins in reading, writing, and math. What's even more impressive, nearly ninety percent of high school students are earning their diplomas and sixty percent of them are going to college. Top students are winning national science awards and full rides at Ivy League universities. These schools are not just good places for poor kids. They are good places for kids, period. Improbable Scholars offers a playbook--not a prayer book--for reform that will dramatically change our approach to reviving public education.

9781452070872. New condition. Trade paperback. Language: English. Pages: 264. Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 264 p. In this inspiring book, Howard Temperley describes his childhood during a time of expanding opportunity and rapid social change. As a young boy, he experienced the poverty of the 1930s and the social dislocations of war. For him, however, the war proved a liberating experience. As an evacuee he spent three glorious years more or less running wild in the Lake District. Back in the urban North East and bored by schoolwork he took refuge in reading, drawing and wildfowling. It was, therefore, a great surprise when, halfway through his second Sixthform year and in spite of a hitherto mediocre school record, Oxford awarded him an open scholarship. In his later chapters he describes his adventures as an improbable cavalry officer, Oxford undergraduate and Yale postgraduate, touching along the way on his encounters with English snobbery and American affluence. With a sharp eye for detail and exceptional writing skills, he paints a vivid picture of what it was like to belong to that upwardly-mobile generation who, thanks to the 1944 Butler Act and other changes in social policy, were granted educational opportunities far greater than had been dreamed of by their parents. Let this moving autobiography take you back in time and relieve one man's incredible journey from a war refugee to a successful Ivy League graduate!
