Handmade porcelain paint palette. This creamy white mini Sea Turtle Palette is a variation of my signature Sea Turtle Tile. Like the Sea Turtle Tile, these palettes can swim solo or be arranged as an interlocking group. Measuring 5 1/4 "x 4 1/2", it’s the perfect size to tuck into a tote bag or backpack when you want to do a little painting at the beach or on a hike. The Sea Turtle Palette is available with or without the Shell Cup. The Shell Cup, which rests loosely on top of the palette, is glazed on it's underside so that it can be used as a water cup. While the Turtle Palette's intended purpose is for painting, it would also make a lovely dish to hold earrings or other small jewelry items. These palettes are made with porcelain slip and are stain resistant and easy to clean. The palette was made by carving the design into a clay slab. I then made a mold of the palette using pottery plaster. Porcelain slip is poured into the mold where water is absorbed into the plaster until the palette is firm enough to be removed. The clay edges are then smoothed by hand and set aside to dry completely. Once dry, the palette is fired to about 1900 degrees. When cooled, the top of the palette is coated with two layers of clear glaze and fired a second time to about 2200 degrees. It's a slow and meticulous process but it results in a high quality ceramic palette.
