Dioniso (in greco attico: Διόνυσος; in greco omerico: Διώνυσος; in greco eolico: Ζόννυσσος o Ζόννυσος; in Lineare B 𐀇𐀺𐀝𐀰 di-wo-nu-so, forma genitiva di-wo-nu-so-jo Lineare B: 𐀇𐀺𐀝𐀰𐀍) è una divinità della religione greca. Inizialmente fu un dio arcaico della vegetazione, legato alla linfa vitale che scorre nelle piante. In seguito fu identificato come dio dell'estasi, del vino, dell'ebbrezza e della liberazione dei sensi; venne quindi a rappresentare l'essenza del creato nel suo perenne e selvaggio fluire, lo spirito divino di una realtà smisurata, l'elemento primigenio del cosmo, l'irruzione spirituale della zoé greca, ossia l'esistenza intesa in senso assoluto, la frenetica corrente di vita che tutto pervade. Dio "ibrido" dalla multiforme natura maschile e femminile, animalesca e divina, tragica e comica, Dioniso incarna, nel suo delirio mistico, la scintilla primordiale e istintuale presente in ogni essere vivente; che permane anche nell'uomo civilizzato come sua parte originaria e insopprimibile, e che può riemergere ed esplodere in maniera violenta se repressa e non elaborata correttamente. Dioniso viene spesso rappresentato nelle arti come vestito di pelle di leopardo o pantera (pardalide), trionfante su di un carro assieme alla sua compagna Arianna, solitamente accompagnato da un corteo chiamato tiaso e composto dalle sue sacerdotesse (dette menadi o baccanti, donne in preda a frenesia estatica e invasate dal dio), bestie feroci, satiri e sileni. Care al dio erano le piante della vite (da cui il legame con il vino e la vendemmia) e all'edera (in particolare alcune specie di edera, contenenti sostanze psicotrope e che venivano lasciate macerare nel vino). Uno dei suoi attributi era infatti il sacro Tirso, un bastone con attorcigliati pampini ed edera; altro suo attributo è il kantharos, una coppa per bere caratterizzata da due alte anse che si estendono in altezza oltre l'orlo. Veniva identificato a Roma con il dio Bacco (simile a Dioniso, pur non essendo la stessa cosa), con il Fufluns venerato dagli Etruschi e con la divinità italica Liber Pater, ed era soprannominato lysios, "colui che scioglie" l'uomo dai vincoli dell'identità personale per ricongiungerlo all'originarietà universale. Nei misteri eleusini veniva identificato con Iacco. Altro epiteto con cui veniva chiamato è Bromio, usato anche da Euripide ne Le Baccanti, da βρόμος, "fragore", "fremito", perché secondo il mito il dio era stato generato in mezzo ai fragori del tuono dalla madre Semele colpita dal fulmine, o perché l'ebbrezza del vino produce fremito e furore. È il dio della mitologia greca di maggior fortuna nella cultura contemporanea, in particolare nel Novecento, dopo che il filosofo Friedrich Nietzsche, nella Nascita della tragedia, ha creato la categoria estetica del dionisiaco contrapponendola a quella dell'apollineo. Mito Origini L'origine del nome Dioniso è suggerita dal genitivo Διός e da νῦσος, quindi il nysos di Zeus: il "giovane figlio di Zeus".[6] Per altri studiosi, l'etimologia è invece legata al monte Nisa, dove il dio venne allevato (theos-Nyses, il dio di Nisa);[7][8] e c'è anche chi propende per il significato di "dio notturno" (theos-nykios).[9] Il poeta Apollonio Rodio invece propose il significato di "nato due volte" (da di-genes) o "il fanciullo dalla doppia porta". Secondo Detienne, Dioniso è il dio straniero per eccellenza, poiché proveniva dalla Tracia. Le ricerche più recenti, in effetti, hanno messo in rilievo l'esistenza di elementi comuni nel culto greco di Dioniso e nei culti della Tracia, con possibilità di rapporti reciproci, uniti forse a influssi dall'Asia Minore (già autori antichi, come Euripide, sostenevano l'origine frigia di Dioniso, che presenta forti affinità col dio Sabazio).Questa tesi ben si accorda al fatto che diversi elementi attestano l'antichità del culto di Dioniso in terra greca: in particolare la presenza del nome sulle tavolette micenee in lineare B, il carattere orgiastico dei culti della vegetazione della religione minoica, nonché la credenza, diffusa a Creta, che il toro rappresenti una forma di epifania divina (e Dioniso venne talvolta invocato con l'appellativo di "toro"). Le notizie relative alle modalità della nascita di Dioniso sono intricate e contrastanti. Sebbene il nome di suo padre, Zeus, sia indiscusso, quello di sua madre è invece vittima di numerose interpretazioni da parte degli autori mitografi. Alcuni dicono che il dio fosse frutto degli amori del dio con Demetra, sua sorella, oppure di Io, o ancora di Lete; altri ancora lo fanno figlio di Dione, oppure di Persefone. Quest'ultima versione, nonostante non sia accettata dalla maggior parte dei mitografi, non è comunque stata scartata del tutto dalla tradizione letteraria. In alcune leggende orfiche la madre di Dioniso è infatti definita "la regina della morte", il che fa appunto pensare a Persefone. Zeus stesso, innamoratosi di sua figlia, che era stata nascosta in una grotta per volere di Demetra, si tramutò in serpente e la raggiunse mentre era intenta a tessere. Ludovico Dolce - Site latein-pagina.de Infant Bacchus torn from Semele’s womb to be sewn into Jupiter’s thigh Nascita di Dioniso La versione generalmente più conosciuta è quella che vuole come madre Semele, figlia di Armonia e di Cadmo, re di Tebe: d'altra parte il suo nome può significare "la sotterranea", se non si riferisca a Selene, la dea Luna, che ribadisce così all'immagine della Terra intesa come grembo oscuro, ma stranamente fecondo, che sottrae la vita alla luce e l'assorbe per riprodurla, in un eterno ciclo di morti e resurrezioni. Anche sulle versioni del concepimento di Dioniso le tradizioni non concordano: secondo alcuni Zeus, dopo avere raccolto ciò che rimaneva del corpicino del diletto figlio Zagreo, generato da Persefone e ucciso dai Titani, cucinò il cuore del fanciullo in un brodo che fece bere alla giovane Semele, sua amante. Oppure il padre degli dei stesso, innamorato perdutamente di Semele, assunse l'aspetto di un mortale per unirsi a lei nel talamo, rendendola incinta di un bambino. L'ennesimo tradimento di Zeus con una mortale non restò oscuro a Era, che si poteva ritenere l'unica moglie legittima del dio. Infuriata, e non potendo vendicarsi sul marito, la dea ispirò nelle tre sorelle di Semele invidia per la sorella, che nonostante fosse in età da nubile poteva vantare già un amante e anche una gravidanza. La povera Semele subì le crudeli beffe di Agave, Ino e Autonoe, le quali criticavano non solo il fatto che fosse già incinta, ma anche che nonostante il concepimento il padre del bambino non si fosse ancora deciso a venire allo scoperto e a dichiararsi. Nel frattempo la regina degli dei, approfittando di questi contrasti, assunse l'aspetto di una vecchia anziana, Beroe, nutrice della fanciulla, la quale era sua assistente sin dalla nascita. La regina degli dei si presentò quindi a Semele, già incinta da sei mesi, che, credendola la nutrice, cominciò a parlare con lei fino a quando il discorso non cadde sul suo amante. La vecchia mise in guardia Semele, consigliandole di fare una singolare richiesta al suo amante, ovvero quella di rivelarle la propria identità, smettendo di ingannarla e nascondersi; altrimenti avrebbe potuto pensare che il suo aspetto fosse in realtà quello di un mostro. Secondo una versione diversa Semele era a conoscenza dell'identità del suo amante ed Era l'aveva messo in guardia proprio dal fidarsi del dio, esortandola a esigere una prova della sua vera identità. Suggerì quindi di chiedere a Zeus di presentarsi a lei come quando si presentava al cospetto di Era. Dopo qualche tempo, quando Zeus tornò nuovamente dalla sua amante per godere le gioie del sesso, Semele, memore delle parole della vecchia, pregò Zeus di rivelargli la sua identità e di smettere di continuare a fingere. Per timore della gelosia di sua moglie Era il dio rifiutò, e a questo punto Semele si oppose al condividere il suo letto con lui. Adirato, Zeus le apparve tra folgori e fulmini accecanti, tanto che la fanciulla, non potendo sopportare il tremendo bagliore, venne incenerita. Secondo l'altra versione quando il padre degli dei tornò dalla sua amante Semele gli chiese di offrirle un regalo ed egli promise di esaudire qualsiasi desiderio della fanciulla. Semele chiese allora al re degli dei di manifestarsi in tutta la sua potenza. Zeus, disperato, fu costretto a realizzare la richiesta di Semele, che rimase uccisa. Per impedire che il bambino morisse Gea, la Terra, fece crescere dell'edera fresca in corrispondenza del feto; ma Zeus incaricò Ermes (o secondo altri lo fece egli stesso) di strappare il feto dal ventre materno e se lo fece cucire dentro la coscia. Passati altri tre mesi e finita il periodo di gestazione, il sovrano degli dèi partorì il bambino, perfettamente vivo e formato, dandogli il nome di Dioniso che vuol dire il "nato due volte" o anche "il fanciullo dalla doppia porta". Quando il piccolo Dioniso nacque dalla coscia di Zeus, lui lo affidò alle cure della sorella di Semele, Ino e a suo marito Atamante. Questo però non passò inosservato agli occhi attenti di Era, la quale fece impazzire i due sposi. Atamante, credendo di vedere un cervo nel figlio Learco, lo uccise a colpi di freccia, mentre Ino si gettò in mare trascinando con sé il piccolo Melicerte. Dioniso rimase solo nella casa abbandonata e chissà cosa gli sarebbe successo se Ermes non lo avesse preso con sé. Lo portò in una lontana montagna dell'Asia minore sulla quale vivevano le Iadi, ninfe dei boschi. Queste crebbero amorevolmente il piccolo Dioniso finché non fu tempo di trovargli un precettore. (Bacchus with Pan) La divinità errante Raggiunta la maturità, Era non poté fare a meno di riconoscerlo come figlio di Zeus, punendolo però al contempo con la pazzia. Egli iniziò allora a vagare insieme al suo tutore Sileno e a un gruppo di satiri e baccanti (così erano dette le seguaci del dio) fino in Egitto, dove si batté con i Titani restituendo ad Ammone lo scettro che questi gli avevano rubato. In seguito si diresse in oriente, verso l'India, sconfiggendo numerosi avversari lungo il suo cammino (tra cui il re di Damasco, che scorticò vivo) e fondando numerose città: dopo aver sconfitto il re indiano Deriade, Dioniso ottenne l'immortalità. Ma al suo ritorno gli si oppose il popolo delle Amazzoni, che egli aveva già precedentemente respinto fino a Efeso: le donne guerriere vennero nuovamente sbaragliate dal dio e dal suo seguito. Fu allora che decise di tornare in Grecia in tutta la sua gloria divina, come figlio di Zeus; dopo essersi purificato dalla nonna Rea per i delitti commessi durante la pazzia, sbarcò in Tracia, dove regnava re Licurgo. Quando il re della Tracia Licurgo seppe che Dioniso aveva fatto irruzione nei propri territori, gli si oppose facendo imprigionare tutti i seguaci del dio: questi riuscì però a fuggire rifugiandosi da Teti. Adirato contro il re di Trancia, Dioniso inviò una terribile siccità che scatenò una rivolta tra il popolo, e maledì Licurgo facendolo impazzire: reso folle dal dio, il sovrano uccise a colpi d'ascia il figlio scambiandolo per un ramo d'edera. Un oracolo nel frattempo, a cui era stato chiesto consiglio, aveva emesso questo verdetto, che tutto il regno sarebbe rimasto secco e sterile fino a quando Licurgo fosse rimasto in vita: il popolo trascinò quindi fuori dal palazzo il proprio sovrano e lo linciò sulla pubblica piazza. Con la morte di Licurgo Dioniso liberò la Tracia dalla maledizione[19].In una versione alternativa della storia Licurgo aveva tentato di uccidere un seguace del dio ma questi, che era stato trasformato immediatamente in un vitigno, si attorcigliò strettamente attorno al re infuriato e lo trattenne tra le sue spire fino a strangolarlo. In seguito Dioniso tolse il senno anche al fratellastro Licurgo, il pirata Bute, che aveva violentato una delle Menadi. Penteo viene squartato dalle Baccanti. Il ritorno in Grecia Sottomessa la Tracia, passò in Beozia e poi alle isole dell'Egeo, dove noleggiò una nave da alcuni giovani marinai diretti a Nasso; questi si rivelarono poi essere pirati che intendevano vendere il dio come schiavo in Asia, ma Dioniso si salvò tramutando in vite l'albero maestro della nave e sé stesso in leone, popolando nel contempo la nave di fantasmi di animali feroci che si muovevano al suono di flauti. I marinai, sconvolti, si gettarono in mare ma il dio li salvò trasformandoli in delfini: pur consapevoli che non avrebbero più riacquistato la forma umana, i giovani compresero anche che il dio aveva voluto concedere loro la possibilità di riscattarsi, e così dedicarono il resto della loro vita a salvare i naufraghi. Per essersi dimostrato più buono degli altri pirati, Acete, il timoniere, non subì metamorfosi, divenendo sacerdote del dio. Quando Dioniso giunse nella sua città natale, Tebe, il sovrano Penteo, suo cugino, si oppose ai nuovi riti introdotti dal dio, facendo arrestare Acete e alcune Menadi. La vendetta di Dioniso su Tebe e sulla sua famiglia è narrata da Euripide nella tragedia intitolata Le Baccanti, composta mentre si trovava alla corte del re Archelao di Macedonia. Nell'opera teatrale, in cui è argomentata la natura più terrifica e distruttiva del dio, Dioniso fa impazzire le donne della città, colpendo per prime le sue zie (Agave, Ino, Autonoe) le quali a loro tempo non avevano dato fiducia alle affermazioni di Semele che diceva d'esser stata messa incinta dal padre degli dèi. Dioniso vuole anche punire l'intera città che continua a negare la sua divinità e si rifiuta pertanto di adorarlo. Le cittadine tebane lasciano la città per andare nei boschi del monte Citerone a celebrare le orgie sacre a Dioniso. Infine il dio spinge lentamente alla pazzia anche re Penteo, convincendolo a travestirsi da donna per andare a spiare le menadi mentre celebrano nei tiasi i riti sacri al dio. Attirato sul monte Citerone, lo fa uccidere dalle donne tebane, che invasate dalla divinità, scambiano Penteo per un animale selvatico. Il sovrano che viene letteralmente fatto a pezzi. La prima ad avventarsi su di lui è proprio Agave, sua madre, posta a capo di un gruppo di baccanti. La donna torna a Tebe con la testa del figlio su una picca e non riconosce il proprio figlio se non quando oramai è troppo tardi e non può far altro che versare amarissime lacrime. Dioniso infine condanna all'esilio da Tebe i suoi parenti, garantendo così la sua totale vendetta. Baccanale, rito dionisiaco. Le relazioni amorose Chirone Viene anche detto che il giovane Dioniso sia stato uno dei tanti allievi illustri del centauro Chirone: secondo Toloneo Chennus (testimonianza raccolta da Fozio nella sua Biblioteca "il giovinetto Dioniso era amato da Chirone, dal quale apprende le arti del canto e della danza, oltre alle regole iniziatiche dei futuri riti bacchici". Ampelo Il primo amore pederastico di Dioniso fu quello espresso nei confronti del giovanissimo satiro di nome Ampelo: l'adolescente con i piedi da capretto rimase ucciso cadendo dalla groppa di un toro impazzito per essere stato punto da un tafano inviatogli da Ate, la dea della malizia. Le Moire a seguito della supplica inviata loro dallo stesso dio che voleva intercedere a favore dell'amante, concessero ad Ampelo una seconda vita in forma di tralcio di vite. Prosimno Una tra le storie più note riguardanti la discesa del giovane semidio nel regno dei morti per riportare in vita la madre è quella che racconta anche del rapporto omosessuale avuto con Prosimno. Guidato dall'uomo lungo il viaggio che lo condusse fin alle porte di Ade, sulla costa dell'Argolide nei pressi di Lerna (e considerato da tutti un pozzo infinito senza possibilità alcuna d'uscita) gli venne chiesta come ricompensa di farsi amare come una donna: Dioniso accettò, gli chiese solo di aspettare che avesse portato in salvo Semele dalle grinfie della morte. Al suo ritorno dagli inferi però Dioniso scoprì che il pastore era morto prima ch'egli potesse onorare il suo impegno. Direttosi al tumulo che conteneva le spoglie mortali di Prosimno, Dioniso s'impegnò a soddisfarne almeno l'ombra: da un ramo di ulivo (o di fico) creò un Phallos di legno e vi si sedette sopra. Infine pose la figura dell'amico tra le stelle del cielo. Questo racconto è sopravvissuto solamente grazie a fonti cristiane, il cui obiettivo primario era quello di screditare moralmente tutta la religione pagana precedente: è servita tuttavia come spiegazione parziale per spiegare alcuni tra gli oggetti segreti che venivano rivelati durante i misteri dionisiaci. Il matrimonio con Arianna Il dio giunse all'isola di Nasso, dove incontrò Arianna abbandonata da Teseo e la sposò, dopodiché riprese di nuovo il mare per la Grecia. Sbarcato ad Argo, Perseo gli eresse un tempio perché placasse le donne di quella città, fatte impazzire dal dio come punizione per l'eccidio dei suoi seguaci, permettendo a Dioniso di entrare nell'Olimpo. Dioniso Zagreo In Antropologia Dioniso rappresenta il mito della « Resurrezione del Dio ucciso. » (James G. Frazer, Il ramo d'oro (The Golden Bough), traduzione di Lauro De Bosis, Giulio Einaudi editore, 1950.) La versione religiosa orfica della venuta al mondo di Dioniso ribattezza il dio col nome di Zagreo. Zagreo (Zαγρεύς) è il figlio che Zeus, sotto forma di serpente, ebbe dalla figlia Persefone[26]. Tale nome appare per la prima volta nel poema dal VI secolo Alcmenoide, nel quale si dice: Potnia veneranda e Zagreo, tu che sai sopra tutti gli dei. Secondo Diodoro Siculo, i Cretesi consideravano Dioniso figlio di Zeus e Persefone e loro conterraneo. Di fatto gli epiteti di Dioniso a Creta erano Cretogeno, Ctonio, in quanto figlio della regina del mondo sotterraneo, e appunto Zagreo. Secondo questo mito, Zeus aveva deciso di fare di Zagreo il suo successore nel dominio del mondo, provocando così l'ira di sua moglie Era. Zeus aveva affidato Zagreo ai Cureti affinché lo allevassero. Allora Era si rivolse ai Titani, i quali attirarono il piccolo Zagreo offrendogli giochi, lo rapirono, lo fecero a pezzi e divorarono le sue carni. Le parti rimanenti del corpo di Zagreo furono raccolte da Apollo, che le seppellì sul monte Parnaso; Atena invece trovò il cuore ancora palpitante del piccolo e lo portò a Zeus. In base alle diverse versioni: Zeus avrebbe mangiato il cuore di Zagreo, poi si sarebbe unito a Semele e questa avrebbe partorito Dioniso. Zeus avrebbe fatto mangiare il cuore di Zagreo a Semele che avrebbe dato al dio divorato una seconda vita, generando appunto Dioniso. Zeus punì i Titani fulminandoli, e dal fumo uscito dai loro corpi in fiamme sarebbero nati gli uomini. Nei Canti Orfici, nell'elenco dei sovrani degli dei, Dioniso è il sesto; «l'ultimo re degli dei, investito da Zeus; il padre lo pone sul trono regale, gli dà lo scettro e lo fa re di tutti gli dei». Sempre nei Canti Orfici[29], Dioniso viene fatto a pezzi dai Titani e ricomposto da Apollo. E, parlando della nascita di Dioniso: «La prima è dalla madre, un'altra è dalla coscia, la terza avviene quando, dopo che è stato straziato dai Titani, e dopo che Rea ha rimesso insieme le sue membra, egli ritorna in vita»[30]. Un'antica etimologia popolare, farebbe risalire di-agreus (perfetto cacciatore), il nome Zagreo. Il simbolo della maschera L'impetuoso avvento di Dioniso e la sua misteriosa presenza sono simboleggiate da un'immagine da cui traspare l'enigma perturbante della sua duplicità e con esso la sua frenesia: la maschera. Nella festa della vendemmia, ad esempio, Dioniso era presente in figura d'una maschera. La maschera, invero, ricorre anche in altri culti greci, ma solo quelle dionisiache rappresentavano il dio nella sua epifania (una di queste, in marmo, dalle proporzioni superiori al normale, con rami d'edera, risale alla seconda metà del VI secolo e appartiene al sacrario dionisiaco di Icaria nell'Attica, che ancora oggi s'intitola al dio; questa maschera serviva evidentemente a usi cultuali che ci sono noti dalle immagini vascolari). A causa delle notevoli dimensioni, tali maschere dunque non venivano indossate ma erano concepite come le immagini stesse del dio. La materia è ancora controversa, ma le diverse ipotesi confluiscono sul concetto della maschera come "epifania" ed essenza del dio, e non semplice simbolo. Sul vaso François, Dioniso, nel corteo degli dei, si presenta diversamente dagli altri: mentre quelli si mostrano di profilo, solo lui volge direttamente all'osservatore il suo gigantesco volto dagli occhi immensi. Questa particolarità viene generalmente spiegata col fatto che fino dall'antichità Dioniso sarebbe stato rappresentato di preferenza con la maschera, ma lo si rappresentava così perché era “il contemplante”, il dio della più immediata presenza. Dal vaso François ci guarda in modo così penetrante proprio perché è sua caratteristica apparire improvvisamente, e con tanta potenza agli occhi degli uomini che la maschera - tipica delle divinità naturalistiche e degli spiriti primigeni - gli serve da simbolo e da personificazione nel culto. Il volto dagli occhi scrutatori è stato da tempi immemorabili considerato come la più caratteristica manifestazione delle nature di tipo umano o ferino, e questa manifestazione viene riaffermata efficacemente dalla maschera, in quanto essa è la più forte immagine della presenza, della frontalità, di ciò “che viene incontro”: i suoi occhi sbarrati davanti a sé sono tali che non si può fuggire, il suo volto è intenso, vibrante e ambiguo, simbolo contraddittorio di immediata presenza e assoluta assenza, di realtà e illusione, ragione e follia. La maschera di Dioniso si distingue da quella delle altre divinità perché è più penetrante e immediatamente sensibile, ed è collegata con l'infinito enigma della duplicità e della contraddizione: i misteri ultimi dell'essere e del non-essere fissano l'uomo con occhi smisurati in un'esperienza totalizzante, che investe tutta la sfera dell'essere. Questo spirito della duplicità che contraddistingue Dioniso e il suo regno ricorre in tutte le forme del suo operare, è la causa di quello stravolgimento che ogni elemento dionisiaco non manca mai di suscitare perché è lo spirito di una natura selvaggia e universale. I Misteri Dionisiaci Elemento tipico del culto di Dioniso è la partecipazione essenzialmente femminile alle cerimonie che si celebravano in svariate zone della Grecia: le baccanti (chiamate anche menadi, lene, tiadi o bassaridi) ne invocavano e cantavano la presenza e, anche per mezzo di maschere (importanti nel culto di Dioniso, che si suppone legato alla nascita della tragedia greca), riproducevano ritualmente il mitico corteo dionisiaco di sileni, satiri e ninfe. Si identificavano con il dio e ne acquisivano il "furore", inteso come stato d'invasamento divino: scopo del rito era quello di ricordare le vicende mitologiche di Dioniso; erano incoronate da frasche di alloro, tralci di vite e pampini, e cinte da pelli di animali selvatici, e reggevano il tirso, una verga appesantita a un'estremità da una pigna che ne rendeva instabili i movimenti; gli uomini erano invece camuffati da satiri (vi partecipavano anche gli schiavi). Ebbro di vino, il corteo, chiamato tiaso, si abbandonava alla vorticosa suggestione musicale del ditirambo, lirica corale e danza ritmica ossessiva ed estatica. Un rito particolarmente violento e brutale era lo Sparagmòs (in greco σπαραγμός) che consisteva nel dilaniare a mani nude degli animali allo scopo di mangiarne le carni crude. Tale rito è persino descritto nel Le Baccanti di Euripide. Nei rituali dionisiaci venivano stravolte le strutture logiche, morali e sociali del mondo abituale. Il filosofo Friedrich Nietzsche, ne La nascita della tragedia, affermò che la potenza dionisiaca induceva in uno stato di estasi ed ebbrezza infrangendo il cosiddetto "principio di individuazione", ossia il rivestimento soggettivo di ciascun individuo, e riconciliava l'essere umano con la natura in uno stato superiore di armonia universale che abbatteva convenzioni e divisioni sociali stabilite arbitrariamente dall'uomo. Nietzsche sosteneva che la vita stessa, come principio che anima i viventi, è istinto, sensualità, caos e irrazionalità, e per questo non poté che vedere in Dioniso la perfetta metafora dell'esistenza: ciò che infonde vita nelle arterie del mondo è infatti una fonte primeva e misteriosa che fluttua caotica nel corpo e nello spirito, è la tempesta primigenia del cosmo in eterno mutamento.] Hegel, da parte sua, nella prefazione alla Fenomenologia dello spirito, raffigurò in un'immagine dionisiaca la conoscenza del Vero, quando la paragonò al «vacillare della baccante, in cui non v'è membro che non sia ebbro». Mircea Eliade scrive: «Il Mistero era costituito dalla partecipazione delle baccanti all'epifania totale di Dioniso. I riti vengono celebrati di notte, lontano dalla città, sui monti e nelle foreste. Attraverso il sacrificio della vittima per squartamento (sparagmós) e la consumazione della carne cruda (omofagia) si realizza la comunione con il dio, perché gli animali fatti a brani e divorati sono epifanie, o incarnazioni, di Dioniso. Tutte le altre esperienze - la forza fisica eccezionale, l'invulnerabilità al fuoco e alle armi, i "prodigi" (l'acqua, il vino, il latte che scaturiscono dal suolo), la "dimestichezza" con i serpenti e i piccoli delle bestie feroci - sono resi possibili dall'entusiasmo, dall'identificazione con il dio. L'estasi dionisiaca significa anzitutto il superamento della condizione umana, la scoperta della liberazione totale, il raggiungimento di una libertà e di una spontaneità inaccessibili ai mortali». Divinità enigmatica e ammaliante, Dioniso si faceva beffe di ogni ordinamento e convenzione, sconvolgeva le coscienze, sgretolava regole e inibizioni riconducendo gli uomini, in un vortice delirante, al loro stato di purezza primordiale. Per il filologo Walter Otto rappresenta “lo spirito divino di una realtà smisurata” che si manifesta in un eterno deflagrare di forze opposte: estasi e terrore, vita e morte, creazione e distruzione, fragore e silenzio, è una pulsione vitale dirompente e selvaggia, che affascina e inquieta, la sinfonia inebriante dell'universale realtà del cosmo. Per Károly Kerényi «dove regna Dioniso la vita si rivela irriducibile e senza confini». Per Roberto Calasso, il dio ubriaco era «intensità allo stato puro» che «travolgeva nell'ebbrezza e usava il sarcasmo verso chiunque gli si opponesse». Per Giorgio Colli è «il dio della contraddizione, di tutte le contraddizioni... è l'assurdo che si dimostra vero con la sua presenza». Le Dionisie urbane e campestri Il culto di Dioniso, diffuso in tutta la Grecia, era particolarmente vivo in Beozia e in Attica. Ad Atene erano importanti le dionisie rurali (o Piccole Dionisie) e quelle urbane (o Grandi Dionisie). Nelle prime, celebrate nei vari borghi dell'Attica, è elemento tipico la falloforia, o processione del fallo, che fa riferimento alle connotazioni agricole e di fecondità del dio; nelle dionisie urbane sono elemento centrale le rappresentazioni teatrali, presenti anche in un'altra festa dionisiaca ateniese, le lenee. Il ciclo delle celebrazioni ufficiali in onore del dio ad Atene era chiuso dai tre giorni delle antesterie, all'inizio della primavera: vi si riscontra la relazione con la vegetazione e il legame col regno dei morti (il terzo giorno si pensava che i morti ritornassero fra i vivi per essere poi, al termine della festa, ritualmente allontanati). A Delfi i tre mesi invernali erano sacri a Dioniso, e l'immagine del dio e del suo corteo era raffigurata su una delle due facciate del tempio. Il culto di Dioniso venne introdotto in Italia dalle colonie greche e fu oggetto anche di provvedimenti repressivi, come il senatoconsulto del 186 a.C. che vietava i baccanali, ma nella religione mistica ebbe sempre grande importanza fino all'età imperiale. Dionysus Dionysus (/daɪ.əˈnaɪsəs/; Greek: Διόνυσος Dionysos) is the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, of ritual madness, fertility, theatre and religious ecstasy in ancient Greek religion and myth. Wine played an important role in Greek culture, and the cult of Dionysus was the main religious focus for its unrestrained consumption. He may have been worshipped as early as c. 1500–1100 BC by Mycenean Greeks; traces of Dionysian-type cult have also been found in ancient Minoan Crete. His origins are uncertain, and his cults took many forms; some are described by ancient sources as Thracian, others as Greek. In some cults, he arrives from the east, as an Asiatic foreigner; in others, from Ethiopia in the South. He is a god of epiphany, "the god that comes", and his "foreignness" as an arriving outsider-god may be inherent and essential to his cults. He is a major, popular figure of Greek mythology and religion, becoming increasingly important over time, and included in some lists of the twelve Olympians, as the last of their number, and the only god born from a mortal mother. His festivals were the driving force behind the development of Greek theatre. The earliest cult images of Dionysus show a mature male, bearded and robed. He holds a fennel staff, tipped with a pine-cone and known as a thyrsus. Later images show him as a beardless, sensuous, naked or half-naked androgynous youth: the literature describes him as womanly or "man-womanish". In its fully developed form, his central cult imagery shows his triumphant, disorderly arrival or return, as if from some place beyond the borders of the known and civilized. His procession (thiasus) is made up of wild female followers (maenads) and bearded satyrs with erect penises; some are armed with the thyrsus, some dance or play music. The god himself is drawn in a chariot, usually by exotic beasts such as lions or tigers, and is sometimes attended by a bearded, drunken Silenus. This procession is presumed to be the cult model for the followers of his Dionysian Mysteries. Dionysus is represented by city religions as the protector of those who do not belong to conventional society and he thus symbolizes the chaotic, dangerous and unexpected, everything which escapes human reason and which can only be attributed to the unforeseeable action of the gods. He is also known as Bacchus (/ˈbækəs/ or /ˈbɑːkəs/; Greek: Βάκχος, Bakkhos), the name adopted by the Romans[15] and the frenzy he induces is bakkheia. In Greek mythology, he is presented as a son of Zeus and the mortal Semele, thus semi-divine or heroic: and as son of Zeus and Persephone or Demeter, thus both fully divine, part-chthonic and possibly identical with Iacchus of the Eleusinian Mysteries. His mother was a mortal woman, Semele, the daughter of king Cadmus of Thebes, and his father was Zeus, the king of the gods. Zeus' wife, Hera, discovered the affair while Semele was pregnant. Appearing as an old crone (in other stories a nurse), Hera befriended Semele, who confided in her that Zeus was the actual father of the baby in her womb. Hera pretended not to believe her, and planted seeds of doubt in Semele's mind. Curious, Semele demanded of Zeus that he reveal himself in all his glory as proof of his godhood. Though Zeus begged her not to ask this, she persisted and he agreed. Therefore, he came to her wreathed in bolts of lightning; mortals, however, could not look upon an undisguised god without dying, and she perished in the ensuing blaze. Zeus rescued the unborn Dionysus by sewing him into his thigh. A few months later, Dionysus was born on Mount Pramnos in the island of Ikaria, where Zeus went to release the now-fully-grown baby from his thigh. In this version, Dionysus is born by two "mothers" (Semele and Zeus) before his birth, hence the epithet dimētōr (of two mothers) associated with his being "twice-born". In the Cretan version of the same story, which Diodorus Siculus follows, Dionysus was the son of Zeus and Persephone, the queen of the Greek underworld. Diodorus' sources equivocally identified the mother as Demeter. A jealous Hera again attempted to kill the child, this time by sending Titans to rip Dionysus to pieces after luring the baby with toys. It is said that he was mocked by the Titans who gave him a thyrsus (a fennel stalk) in place of his rightful sceptre. Zeus turned the Titans into dust with his thunderbolts, but only after the Titans ate everything but the heart, which was saved, variously, by Athena, Rhea, or Demeter. Zeus used the heart to recreate him in his thigh, hence he was again "the twice-born". Other versions claim that Zeus recreated him in Semele's womb, or that he impregnated Semele by giving her the heart to eat. His rebirth is the primary reason for the worship of Dionysus in several mystery religions. Variants of the narrative are found in Callimachus and Nonnus, who refer to this Dionysus with the title Zagreus, and also in several fragmentary poems attributed to Orpheus.[citation needed] The myth of the dismemberment of Dionysus by the Titans, is alluded to by Plato in his Phaedo (69d) in which Socrates claims that the initiations of the Dionysian Mysteries are similar to those of the philosophic path. One version of the story is that Hermes took the boy to King Athamas and his wife Ino, Dionysus' aunt. Hermes bade the couple to raise the boy as a girl, to hide him from Hera's wrath. Another version is that Dionysus was taken to the rain-nymphs of Nysa, who nourished his infancy and childhood, and for their care Zeus rewarded them by placing them as the Hyades among the stars (see Hyades star cluster). Other versions have Zeus giving him to Rhea, or to Persephone to raise in the Underworld, away from Hera. Alternatively, he was raised by Maro.[citation needed] Dionysus in Greek mythology is a god of foreign origin, and while Mount Nysa is a mythological location, it is invariably set far away to the east or to the south. The Homeric hymn to Dionysus places it "far from Phoenicia, near to the Egyptian stream". Others placed it in Anatolia, or in Libya ("away in the west beside a great ocean"), in Ethiopia (Herodotus), or Arabia (Diodorus Siculus).[citation needed] According to Herodotus: As it is, the Greek story has it that no sooner was Dionysus born than Zeus sewed him up in his thigh and carried him away to Nysa in Ethiopia beyond Egypt; and as for Pan, the Greeks do not know what became of him after his birth. The coffin is small, as if made for a child rather than for an adult. Childhood When Dionysus grew up, he discovered the culture of the vine and the mode of extracting its precious juice, being the first to do so; but Hera struck him with madness, and drove him forth a wanderer through various parts of the earth. In Phrygia the goddess Cybele, better known to the Greeks as Rhea, cured him and taught him her religious rites, and he set out on a progress through Asia teaching the people the cultivation of the vine. The most famous part of his wanderings is his expedition to India, which is said to have lasted several years. According to a legend, when Alexander the Great reached a city called Nysa near the Indus river, the locals said that their city was founded by Dionysus in the distant past and their city was dedicated to the god Dionysus. These travels took something of the form of military conquests; according to Diodorus Siculus he conquered the whole world except for Britain and Ethiopia. Returning in triumph (he was considered the founder of the triumphal procession) he undertook to introduce his worship into Greece, but was opposed by some princes who dreaded its introduction on account of the disorders and madness it brought with it (e.g. Pentheus or Lycurgus). Dionysus was exceptionally attractive. One of the Homeric hymns recounts how, while disguised as a mortal sitting beside the seashore, a few sailors spotted him, believing he was a prince. They attempted to kidnap him and sail him far away to sell for ransom or into slavery. They tried to bind him with ropes, but no type of rope could hold him. Dionysus turned into a fierce lion and unleashed a bear on board, killing those he came into contact with. Those who jumped off the ship were mercifully turned into dolphins. The only survivor was the helmsman, Acoetes, who recognized the god and tried to stop his sailors from the start. In a similar story, Dionysus desired to sail from Icaria to Naxos. He then hired a Tyrrhenian pirate ship. However, when the god was on board, they sailed not to Naxos but to Asia, intending to sell him as a slave. So Dionysus turned the mast and oars into snakes, and filled the vessel with ivy and the sound of flutes so that the sailors went mad and, leaping into the sea, were turned into dolphins. In Ovid's Metamorphoses Bacchus begins this story as a young child, found by the pirates, but transforms to a divine adult when on board. Malcolm Bull notes that "It is a measure of Bacchus's ambiguous position in classical mythology that he, unlike the other Olympians, had to use a boat to travel to and from the islands with which he is associated". Other stories Midas Dionysus discovered that his old school master and foster father, Silenus, had gone missing. The old man had been drinking, and had wandered away drunk, and was found by some peasants, who carried him to their king (alternatively, he passed out in Midas' rose garden). Midas recognized him, and treated him hospitably, entertaining him for ten days and nights with politeness, while Silenus entertained Midas and his friends with stories and songs. On the eleventh day, he brought Silenus back to Dionysus. Dionysus offered Midas his choice of whatever reward he wanted. Midas asked that whatever he might touch should be changed into gold. Dionysus consented, though was sorry that he had not made a better choice. Midas rejoiced in his new power, which he hastened to put to the test. He touched and turned to gold an oak twig and a stone. Overjoyed, as soon as he got home, he ordered the servants to set a feast on the table. Then he found that his bread, meat, and wine turned to gold. Later, when his daughter embraced him, she too turned to gold. Upset, Midas strove to divest himself of his power (the Midas Touch); he hated the gift he had coveted. He prayed to Dionysus, begging to be delivered from starvation. Dionysus heard and consented; he told Midas to wash in the river Pactolus. He did so, and when he touched the waters the power passed into them, and the river sands changed into gold. This was an etiological myth that explained why the sands of the Pactolus were rich in gold. Pentheus, his mother Agave, and his aunts Ino and Autonoe do not believe that Dionysus is a son of Zeus. Despite the warnings of the blind prophet Tiresias, they deny him worship; instead, they arraign him for causing madness among the women of Thebes. Dionysus uses his divine powers to drive Pentheus insane, then invites him to spy on the ecstatic rituals of the Maenads, in the woods of Mount Cithaeron. Pentheus, hoping to witness a sexual orgy, hides himself in a tree. The Maenads spot him; maddened by Dionysus, they take him to be a mountain lion, and attack him with their bare hands. Pentheus' aunts, and his mother, Agave, are among them; they rip him limb from limb. Agave mounts his head on a pike, and takes the trophy to her father, Cadmus. The madness passes. Dionysus arrives in his true, divine form, banishes Agave and her sisters, and transforms Cadmus and his wife Harmonia into serpents. Only Tiresias is spared. Bacchus/ Dionysus returning from India. Unknown - Bacchus returning in Triumph from India Published 18th–19th century Bacchus returning from India lycurgus When King Lycurgus of Thrace heard that Dionysus was in his kingdom, he imprisoned Dionysus' followers, the Maenads. Dionysus fled and took refuge with Thetis, and sent a drought which stirred the people into revolt. Dionysus then drove King Lycurgus insane and had him slice his own son into pieces with an axe in the belief that he was a patch of ivy, a plant holy to Dionysus. An oracle then claimed that the land would stay dry and barren as long as Lycurgus was alive. His people had him drawn and quartered. Following the death of the king, Dionysus lifted the curse. This story is told in Homer's epic, Iliad 6.136-7. In an alternative version, sometimes shown in art, Lycurgus tries to kill Ambrosia, a follower of Dionysus, who was transformed into a vine that twined around the enraged king and restrained him, eventually killing him. Prosymnus Dionysus was of the few Olympians with the power to remove deceased mortals from the underworld, and thus restore them to life.[citation needed] He descended to the underworld (Hades) to rescue his mother Semele, whom he had not seen since his birth, making the descent by way of a reputedly bottomless pool on the coast of the Argolid near the prehistoric site of Lerna, and bypassing Thanatos, the god of death. According to Clement of Alexandria, Dionysus was guided by Prosymnus or Polymnus, who requested, as his reward, to be Dionysus' lover. Dionysus returned Semele to Mount Olympus; but Prosymnus died before Dionysus could honor his pledge, so in order to satisfy Prosymnus' shade, Dionysus fashioned a phallus from an olive branch and sat on it at Prosymnus' tomb. This story survives in full only in Christian sources whose aim was to discredit pagan mythology. It appears to have served to explain the secret objects of the Dionysian Mysteries. As related by Ovid, Ampelus became the constellation Vindemitor, or the "grape-gatherer": ...not so will the Grape-gatherer escape thee. The origin of that constellation also can be briefly told. 'Tis said that the unshorn Ampelus, son of a nymph and a satyr, was loved by Bacchus on the Ismarian hills. Upon him the god bestowed a vine that trailed from an elm’s leafy boughs, and still the vine takes from the boy its name. While he rashly culled the gaudy grapes upon a branch, he tumbled down; Liber bore the lost youth to the stars." Another story of Ampelus was related by Nonnus: in an accident foreseen by Dionysus, the youth was killed while riding a bull maddened by the sting of a gadfly sent by Atë, the Goddess of Folly. The Fates granted Ampelus a second life as a vine, from which Dionysus squeezed the first wine. Chiron Young Dionysus was also said to have been one of the many famous pupils of the centaur Chiron. According to Ptolemy Chennus in the Library of Photius, "Dionysus was loved by Chiron, from whom he learned chants and dances, the bacchic rites and initiations." For a drawing Secondary myths When Hephaestus bound Hera to a magical chair, Dionysus got him drunk and brought him back to Olympus after he passed out. A third descent by Dionysus to Hades is invented by Aristophanes in his comedy The Frogs. Dionysus, as patron of the Athenian dramatic festival, the Dionysia, wants to bring back to life one of the great tragedians. After a competition Aeschylus is chosen in preference to Euripides. When Theseus abandoned Ariadne sleeping on Naxos, Dionysus found and married her. She bore him a son named Oenopion, but he committed suicide or was killed by Perseus. In some variants, he had her crown put into the heavens as the constellation Corona; in others, he descended into Hades to restore her to the gods on Olympus. Another different account claims Dionysus ordered Theseus to abandon Ariadne on the island of Naxos for he had seen her as Theseus carried her onto the ship and had decided to marry her. Psalacantha, a nymph, failed at winning the love of Dionysus as his main love interest at the moment was Ariadne, and ended up being changed into a plant. Callirrhoe was a Calydonian woman who scorned Coresus, a priest of Dionysus, who threatened to afflict all the women of Calydon with insanity (see Maenad). The priest was ordered to sacrifice Callirhoe but he killed himself instead. Callirhoe threw herself into a well which was later named after her. Dionysus is also strongly associated with satyrs, centaurs, and sileni. He is often shown riding a leopard, wearing a leopard skin, or in a chariot drawn by panthers, and may also be recognized by the thyrsus he carries. Besides the grapevine and its wild barren alter-ego, the toxic ivy plant, both sacred to him, the fig was also his symbol. The pinecone that tipped his thyrsus linked him to Cybele. The Dionysia and Lenaia festivals in Athens were dedicated to Dionysus. On numerous vases (referred to as Lenaia vases), the god is shown participating in the ritual sacrifice as a masked and clothed pillar (sometimes a pole, or tree is used), while his worshipers eat bread and drink wine. Initiates worshipped him in the Dionysian Mysteries, which were comparable to and linked with the Orphic Mysteries, and may have influenced Gnosticism[citation needed]. Bacchus and the Bacchanalia A mystery cult to Bacchus was brought to Rome from the Greek culture of southern Italy or by way of Greek-influenced Etruria. It was established c.200 BC in the Aventine grove of Stimula by a priestess from Campania, near the temple where Liber Pater ("The Free Father") had a State-sanctioned, popular cult. Liber was a native Roman god of wine, fertility, and prophecy, patron of Rome's plebeians (citizen-commoners) and a close equivalent to Bacchus-Dionysus Eleutherios. In Livy's account, the new Bacchic mysteries were originally restricted to women and held only three times a year; but were corrupted by the Etruscan-Greek version, and thereafter drunken men and women of all ages and social classes cavorted in a sexual free-for-all five times a month. Livy relates their various outrages against Rome's civil and religious laws and morality; a secretive, subversive and potentially revolutionary counter-culture. The cult was suppressed by the State with great ferocity; of the 7,000 arrested, most were executed. Modern scholarship treats much of Livy's account with skepticism; more certainly, a Senatorial edict, the Senatus consultum de Bacchanalibus was distributed throughout Roman and allied Italy. It banned the former Bacchic cult organisations. Each meeting must seek prior senatorial approval through a praetor. No more than three women and two men were allowed at any one meeting, Those who defied the edict risked the death penalty. Bacchus was conscripted into the official Roman pantheon as an aspect of Liber, and his festival was inserted into the Liberalia. In Roman culture, Liber, Bacchus and Dionysus became virtually interchangeable equivalents. Bacchus was euhemerised as a wandering hero, conqueror and founder of cities. He was a patron deity and founding hero at Leptis Magna, birthplace of the emperor Septimius Severus, who promoted his cult. In some Roman sources, the ritual procession of Bacchus in a tiger-drawn chariot, surrounded by maenads, satyrs and drunks, commemorates the god's triumphant return from the conquest of India, the historical prototype for the Roman Triumph. But, apart from some reliefs of maenads, Dionysian subjects rarely appeared in large sculpture before the Hellenistic period, when they became common. In these, the treatment of the god himself ranged from severe archaising or Neo Attic types such as the Dionysus Sardanapalus to types showing him as an indolent and androgynous young man, often nude. Hermes and the Infant Dionysus is probably a Greek original in marble, and the Ludovisi Dionysus group is probably a Roman original of the 2nd century AD. Well-known Hellenistic sculptures of Dionysian subjects, surviving in Roman copies, include the Barberini Faun, the Belvedere Torso, the Resting Satyr. The Furietti Centaurs and Sleeping Hermaphroditus reflect related subjects, which had by this time become drawn into the Dionysian orbit. The marble Dancer of Pergamon is an original, as is the bronze Dancing Satyr of Mazara del Vallo, a recent recovery from the sea. The Dionysian world by the Hellenistic period is a hedonistic but safe pastoral into which other semi-divine creatures of the countryside such as centaurs, nymphs, and the god Pan and Hermaphrodite have been co-opted. Nymphs by this stage "means simply an ideal female of the Dionysian outdoors, a non-wild bacchant". Hellenistic sculpture also includes for the first time large genre subjects of children and peasant, many of whom carry Dionysian attributes such as ivy wreaths, and "most should be seen as part of his realm. They have in common with satyrs and nymphs that they are creatures of the outdoors and are without true personal identity." The 4th-century BC Derveni Krater, the unique survival of a very large scale Classical or Hellenistic metal vessel of top quality, depicts Dionysus and his followers. Dionysus appealed to the Hellenistic monarchies for a number of reasons, apart from merely being a god of pleasure: He was a human who became divine, he came from, and had conquered, the East, exemplified a lifestyle of display and magnificence with his mortal followers, and was often regarded as an ancestor. He continued to appeal to the rich of Imperial Rome, who populated their gardens with Dionysian sculpture, and by the 2nd century AD were often buried in sarcophagi carved with crowded scenes of Bacchus and his entourage. The 4th-century AD Lycurgus Cup in the British Museum is a spectacular cage cup which changes colour when light comes through the glass; it shows the bound King Lycurgus being taunted by the god and attacked by a satyr; this may have been used for celebration of Dionysian mysteries. Elizabeth Kessler has theorized that a mosaic appearing on the triclinium floor of the House of Aion in Nea Paphos, Cyprus, details a monotheistic worship of Dionysus.[56] In the mosaic, other gods appear but may only be lesser representations of the centrally imposed Dionysus. The mid-Byzantine Veroli Casket shows the tradition lingering in Constantinople around 1000 AD, but probably not very well understood. Bacchus by Caravaggio Caravaggio - dAEBrgRq5AvsQA at Google Cultural Institute Art from the Renaissance on Bacchic subjects in art resumed in the Italian Renaissance, and soon became almost as popular as in antiquity, but his "strong association with feminine spirituality and power almost disappeared", as did "the idea that the destructive and creative powers of the god were indissolubly linked". In Michelangelo's statue (1496–97) "madness has become merriment". The statue aspires to suggest both drunken incapacity and an elevated consciousness, but this was perhaps lost on later viewers, and typically the two aspects were thereafter split, with a clearly drunk Silenus representing the former, and a youthful Bacchus often shown with wings, because he carries the mind to higher places. Titian's Bacchus and Ariadne (1522–23) and The Bacchanal of the Andrians (1523-26), both painted for the same room, offer an influential heroic pastoral,while Diego Velázquez in The Triumph of Bacchus (or Los borrachos - "the drinkers", c. 1629) and Jusepe de Ribera in his Drunken Silenus choose a genre realism. Flemish Baroque painting frequently painted the Bacchic followers, as in Van Dyck's Drunken Silenus and many works by Rubens; Poussin was another regular painter of Bacchic scenes. Depictions of the proverb Sine Cerere et Baccho friget Venus were a particular feature of Northern Mannerism, but the subject was also painted several times by Rubens. Because of his association with the vine harvest, Bacchus became the god of autumn, and he and his followers were often shown in sets depicting the seasons. Modern literature and philosophy Dionysus has remained an inspiration to artists, philosophers and writers into the modern era. In The Birth of Tragedy (1872), the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche proposed that a tension between Apollonian and Dionysian aesthetic principles underlay the development of Greek tragedy; Dionysus represented what was unrestrained chaotic and irrational, while Apollo represented the rational and ordered. Nietzsche claimed that the oldest forms of Greek Tragedy were entirely based on suffering of Dionysus. In Nietzsche's 1886 work Beyond Good and Evil, and later works The Twilight of the Idols, The Antichrist and Ecce Homo, Dionysus is conceived as the embodiment of the unrestrained will to power. In The Hellenic Religion of the Suffering God (1904), and Dionysus and Early Dionysianism (1921), the poet Vyacheslav Ivanov elaborates the theory of Dionysianism, tracing the origins of literature, and tragedy in particular, to ancient Dionysian mysteries. Károly Kerényi characterizes Dionysus as representative of the psychological life force (Greek Zoê). Other psychological interpretations place Dionysus' emotionality in the foreground, focusing on the joy, terror or hysteria associated with the god. Sigmund Freud specified that his ashes should be kept in an Ancient Greek vase painted with Dionysian scenes from his collection, which remains on display at Golders Green Crematorium in London. Walt Disney uses a modernised version of Silenus, Dionysus or Bacchus in the "Pastoral" segment of the animated film Fantasia. In CS Lewis' Prince Caspian (part of The Chronicles of Narnia), Bacchus is a dangerous-looking, androgynous young boy who helps Aslan awaken the spirits of the Narnian trees and rivers. Rick Riordan's series of books Percy Jackson & The Olympians presents Dionysus as an uncaring, childish and spoiled god.[citation needed] The triumph of Bacchus by Cornelis de Vos. Cornelis de Vos Worship after Christianization of Europe Though the last known worshippers of Greek gods were converted before 1000 AD, there were instances of revived worship of Dionysus afterwards, and finally with the rise of neopaganism, worship of the god has once again been revived. During Easter in 1282 in Scotland, the parish priest of Inverkeithing led young women in a dance in honor of Dionysus. He danced and sang at the front, carrying a representation of the phallus on a pole. He was killed by a Christian mob later that year. In the 18th century, Hellfire Clubs sprung up in Britain and Ireland. Though activities varied between the clubs, some of them were very pagan, and included shrines and sacrifices. Dionysus was one of the more popular deities, alongside deities like Venus and Flora. Today one can still see the statue of Dionysus left behind in the Hellfire Caves. In 1820 Ephraim Lyon founded the Church of Bacchus in Eastford, Connecticut. He declared himself High Priest, and added local drunks to the list of membership. He maintained that those who died as members would go to a Bacchanalia for their afterlife. Bacchus by Paulus Bor. Paulus Bor Parallels with Christianity Some authors have argued that similarities exist between Dionysus and the traditional Christian portrayal of Jesus. The earliest discussions of mythological parallels between Dionysus and the figure of the Christ in Christian theology can be traced to Friedrich Hölderlin, whose identification of Dionysus with Christ is most explicit in Brod und Wein (1800–1801) and Der Einzige (1801–1803). Theories regarding such parallels were popular in the 19th century. Some modern scholars such as Martin Hengel, Barry Powell, Robert M. Price, and Peter Wick argue that Dionysian religion and Christianity have parallels. They point to the symbolism of wine and the importance it held in the mythology surrounding both Dionysus and Jesus Christ. Wick, however, argues that the use of wine symbolism in the Gospel of John, including the story of the Marriage at Cana at which Jesus turns water into wine, is intended to show Jesus as superior to Dionysus. Many sources reject the parallels between the cult of Dionysus and Christ, asserting that the similarities are superficial, often general and universal parallels found in many stories, both historical and mythical, and that the symbolism represented by the similar themes are radically different. Death and Resurrection Scholars of comparative mythology identify both Dionysus and Jesus with the dying-and-returning god mythological archetype. On the other hand, it has been noted that the details of Dionysus' death and rebirth are starkly different both in content and symbolism from Jesus. The two stories take place in very different historical and geographic contexts. Also, the manner of death is different; in the most common myth, Dionysus was torn to pieces and eaten by the titans, but "eventually restored to a new life" from the heart that was left over. The Trial Another parallel can be seen in The Bacchae where Dionysus appears before King Pentheus on charges of claiming divinity, which is compared to the New Testament scene of Jesus being interrogated by Pontius Pilate. However, a number of scholars dispute this parallel, since the confrontation between Dionysus and Pentheus ends with Pentheus dying, torn into pieces by the mad women, whereas the trial of Jesus ends with him being sentenced to death. The discrepancies between the two stories, including their resolutions, have led many scholars to regard the Dionysus story as radically different from the one about Jesus, except for the parallel of the arrest, which is a detail that appears in many biographies as well. The omophagia was the Dionysian act of eating raw flesh and drinking wine to consume the god. Within Orphism, it was believed that consuming the meat and wine was symbolic of the Titans eating the flesh (meat) and blood (wine) of Dionysus and that, by participating in the omophagia, Dionysus' followers could achieve communion with the god. Powell, in particular, argues that precursors to the Catholic notion of transubstantiation can be found in Dionysian religion. In The Bacchae, a poem of prayer is directed to Dionysus and Demeter, honoring the two deities as both the most precious forces to mankind and honoring Dionysus' blood as the wine drunk by humans: Young man, two are the forces most precious to mankind. The first is Demeter, the Goddess. She is the Earth Or any name you wish to call her And she sustains humanity with solid food. Next came Dionysus, the son of the virgin, Bringing the counterpart to bread: Wine and the blessings of life’s flowing juices. His blood, the blood of the grape, Lightens the burden of our mortal misery. Though himself a God, It is his blood we pour out to offer thanks to the Gods. And through him, we are blessed. Other parallels E. Kessler has argued that the Dionysian cult developed into strict monotheism by the 4th century AD; together with Mithraism and other sects, the cult formed an instance of "pagan monotheism" in direct competition with Early Christianity during Late Antiquity. Scholars from the 16th century onwards, especially Gerard Vossius, also discussed the parallels between the biographies of Dionysus/Bacchus and Moses (Vossius named his sons Dionysius and Isaac). Such comparisons surface in details of paintings by Poussin. The pillar-support is adorned by a group of Dionysos, Pan and a Satyr. The nude Dionysos holds a rhyton (ritual vase) ending in the front half of a panther. Next to him the goat-footed god Pan holds a lagobolon (stick to hares). In front of him is a small cylindrical basket, from which a snake is emerging. A young Satyr climbs up the vine and cuts grapes with in his right hand. From the branch hangs a lagobolon, a pan-pipe and a goatskin. The exposed parts of the bodies are very well polished. Traces of red and yellow colour are preserved on the hair of the figures and the branches. This elaborate piece is from an Asia Minor workshop. AD 170-180. National Archaeological Museum, Athens, Greece Names Etymology The dio- element has been associated since antiquity with Zeus (genitive Dios). The earliest attested form of the name is Mycenaean Greek 𐀇𐀺𐀝𐀰, di-wo-nu-so, written in Linear B syllabic script, presumably for /Diwo(h)nūsoio/. This is attested on two tablets that had been found at Mycenaean Pylos and dated to the 12th or 13th century BC, but at the time, there could be no certainty on whether this was indeed a theonym. But the 1989–90 Greek-Swedish Excavations at Kastelli Hill, Chania, unearthed, inter alia, four artefacts bearing Linear B inscriptions; among them, the inscription on item KH Gq 5 is thought to confirm Dionysus's early worship. Later variants include Dionūsos and Diōnūsos in Boeotia; Dien(n)ūsos in Thessaly; Deonūsos and Deunūsos in Ionia; and Dinnūsos in Aeolia, besides other variants. A Dio- prefix is found in other names, such as that of the Dioscures, and may derive from Dios, the genitive of the name of Zeus. The second element -nūsos is associated with Mount Nysa, the birthplace of the god in Greek mythology, where he was nursed by nymphs (the Nysiads), but according to Pherecydes of Syros, nũsa was an archaic word for "tree". R. S. P. Beekes has suggested a Pre-Greek origin of the name. The cult of Dionysus was closely associated with trees, specifically the fig tree, and some of his bynames exhibit this, such as Endendros "he in the tree" or Dendritēs, "he of the tree". Peters suggests the original meaning as "he who runs among the trees", or that of a "runner in the woods". Janda (2010) accepts the etymology but proposes the more cosmological interpretation of "he who impels the (world-)tree". This interpretation explains how Nysa could have been re-interpreted from a meaning of "tree" to the name of a mountain: the axis mundi of Indo-European mythology is represented both as a world-tree and as a world-mountain.
