I've been trying to figure out how to make the most out of what I've got. How do you make something new out of what is already in existence? What I've got is a lot of porcelain pendants. And these pieces above have all now been etched. What is etching? I wondered the same thing... Years ago I was talking to my friend Nikki (Thornburg Bead Studio) about how she got that awesome satin matte finish on some of her glass beads - the ones that I was completely drawn to more than any other bead. We were both selling our work at a bead show, and I think the conversation was something along the lines of me asking novice questions like: "What kind of glass is that? The one that has a satin matte etched finish?" Then she politely giggled as always and explained that it was an extra step she took after creating the beads to remove the glossy glass finish. She used a liquid glass etch (Etch All) to get that finish on some of her beads. Update: Check out the bottle on this post. I thought that since my pieces were glazed - and glaze contains silica (glass) - I should be able to etch my glazed pieces... So I ordered the Dip 'n etch etching solution, etched pieces, but was a bit occupied traveling selling my work at bead shows at the time to really spend a lot of time in the studio experimenting, so I put it up on the shelf. (still can't find that original bottle - it's in a box in the studio somewhere!) Marsha Neal Studio Newly Etched Butterfly and Bat Pendants. Pin It This time I was really ready to experiment and play with it (no show pressure this time). I followed the directions on the bottle and soon figured out that my glazes would take a lot longer than a few minutes to get the look I wanted (this took lots of testing and keeping track of time - 15 minutes give or take depending on the actual glaze). Marsha Neal Studio reenactment of rinsing etched pendants. After the 15 minutes was up, I carefully emptied the etching solution back into the original bottle, then rinsed each piece at the sink. My pieces have a lot of texture so I used a green scrubby, the industrial kind, to clean each piece individually. Also, please note that I was wearing gloves during the entire process around the etching solution. Always follow safety guidelines on bottle! I remembered that I should be taking a photo after these were rinsed, and ran the water just to show the step... This Large Bead Rack is designed for potters, jewelers and glass artists. It allows you to easily glaze fire beads, pendants, buttons, etc. - without the worry of them sticking to your kiln shelf. The entire rack gets placed in the kiln with your glazed pieces on it. Replacement wires come six to a pack and are 10" long nichrome wires that are 9 gauge. The wires rest on grooves in the rack, so they can be easily rearranged to accommodate different size pieces. The wires are heavy gauge metal and can withstand multiple firings. We recommend that if you are firing heavy items, you use shorter wires. Maximum firing temperature is Cone 10 (2400 F).

Celebrating Art Beads, Inspiring Those Who Use Them.
Finally the weather is getting warmer. Over here in the UK, we’ve been having some beautiful weather in between the showers, and I’m thinking of seasonal beads made in clay. Today I’d like to share how I create my Spring flower beads. They are made from ceramic clay, but I think they’d work equally well in polymer if you don’t have access to a kiln. To start, grab yourself a lump of clay and roll a sausage. Cut the sausage in to equal sized pieces. This will help your beads to be roughly the same size. Roll each piece in to a ball and flatten. I do this by squashing the ball in the centre and then gently squeezing around the edge to level the clay. This will give you a square edge. Next you need a chisel ended tool. This is one of my two most used tools for bead making. I never use the other end, but the chisel tip is great for smoothing, shaping and marking your clay. Press the tool in to the clay at the edge and then roll the tip towards the centre of the bead to make an indent. Do this at opposite sides around the edge until you have petals. Flip the bead and putting your tool in the groove from the first side, roll around to the centre again to create petals on the second side. Take a skewer or your favourite hole making implement. Pierce centrally in between two petals through to the other side so that the point just pokes through the clay. (I find it’s easier to look at the bead edge on while doing this to make sure the skewer goes through level. Take out the skewer and pierce from the opposite side to join the first hole and push all the way through. Working like this gives you a neater hole, and also gives you the chance to correct any lining up mistakes from the first poke. With the bead still on the skewer, take a ball stylus tool and poke a ring of dots in the centre of the flower. Poke another ring inside that, and continue until the centre is filled. Leave the clay to harden a little and then if there are any cracks around the hole, you can clean these up with a damp paintbrush before leaving to dry completely. When they are dry, these go in to the kiln for a bisque firing. Next they are glazed, the glaze is wiped from the front surfaces to create a nice contrast and highlight the centres, and they are fired again to full temperature. The dotted centres are quite a simple design, but there are lots of different effects you can go for in the middle, add lines, wiggles, more petals, whatever you like to make them your own! If you’re trying this in polymer, I think you could get some great effects with inks and pastes, and I’d love to see what you create if you try! Caroline http://www.blueberribeads.co.uk
