Central Synagogue, designed by Henry Fernbach in 1872, is the oldest building in New York State in continuous use by a single Jewish congregation, Congregation Ahawath Chesed, a German Reform congregation founded in 1846 on the Lower East Side by Jews from Bohemia. Dominated by two onion-shapped, green-copper-domed octagonal towers rising 122 feet, meant to be reminiscent of Solomon's Temple, Central Synagogue reflects Moorish Islamic Revival form reflecting the heritage of Jews in Moorish Spain, a response to the 19th century debate on the appropriate style for synagogues. The exterior features one large rose window, accompanied by many smaller arched windows. Central Synagogue was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1966. National Register #70000423 (1970)
