The púca (Irish for spirit/ghost), pooka, phouka, phooka, phooca, puca or púka, is primarily a creature of Irish folklore. Considered to be bringers both of good and bad fortune, they could either help or hinder rural and marine communities. The creatures were said to be shape changers which could take the appearance of black horses, goats and rabbits. The púca has counterparts throughout the Celtic cultures of Northwest Europe. Other high-quality nonfiction books that cover the basics of ancient Celtic life may be used to complete the activities, but only the topics (plus one additional topic about Celtic cattle farming) presented in the previously mentioned Usborne books are represented in this resource. The activities in this resource primarily use simple cutting, pasting, matching, sorting, drawing, tracing, and coloring skills as a means for students to show what they know about the given topics. Please note that students should not be expected to complete the activities without guidance. Nearly all students will need help reading through the activities and following directions.
