VERSES: Lamentation 1:1-5:22 MEMORY VERSE: Lamentations 3:40 "Let us search and try our ways, and turn again unto the LORD." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Colossians. Write "Colossians" on small slips of paper and hand out to the students at the end of class. PRAYER: Pray our hearts will be tender and pure and, when we sin, we will have a heart like David's and repent with our whole heart. SPECIAL SONG: Be Careful Little Eyes (see March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #3 on this blog. Click on orange circles to hear tune.) VISUAL AID: Draw a large Activity (see below) on the chalkboard or whiteboard. LESSON POINTS: When Jeremiah, the prophet of God, wrote the book of Lamentations, it was at the saddest time ever for a child of God. "Lamentations" mean grief, sorrow, and extreme sadness. God had allowed the Babylonians to come into Jerusalem, the city of David, and totally destroy it. The Babylonians were ruthless soldiers and were not careful about anything. They wrecked the temple, and took all of the gold and precious things back to Babylon. They set the city on fire. They killed so many people and truly did not care if the person was old, young, man or woman or child. It was a terrible, terrible time for the Jews. Why had all of these dreadful things happened to God's people? It was because of their disobedience to God. God is a patient God, but, after warning His people for so long, His patience finally wore out. He had warned the people through Moses, through Joshua, through the judges, and through the prophets, to return to Him and serve Him only, but they did not listen all of those years. God finally said that he had had enough of their sin, their idols, their selfishness, and their lack of love for Him. He allowed a nation from the north, the Babylonians to come and ravage the city and take away the captives as their slaves to their city of Babylon. Jeremiah had lived through all of this destruction. He spent his whole life warning the people of Judah to turn from their evil ways and return to God. But, the people would not repent and stop doing their wicked deeds. Jeremiah saw the city destroyed and, when he wrote his book, he wrote like someone had died and he was attending a funeral, but it wasn't someone, it was the city of Jerusalem and God's people. It was so very, very sad. Some people call this book of Lamentations, the "Weeping Song." Jeremiah cried over the destruction of Jerusalem, but also over the disobedient people and their stubbornness to do wickedness. "Older Student" Tips: Jeremiah wrote Lamentations after the city of Jerusalem was destroyed and the people were in Babylonian Captivity. This book was read on the anniversary of the destruction of Jerusalem. The book of Lamentations has a unique writing style. In Hebrew, there are 22 letters of their alphabet. This book is unusual because Chapters 1, 2, 4, and 5 have 22 verses in each of those chapters and each of the verses in each chapters begin with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. While chapters 1, 2, and 4 are alphabetized, chapter 5 is not. When the alphabet is used in this way to write, it is called an acrostic form of writing. Chapter 3 is unusual because it has 66 verses and the first three verses begin with aleph (the first letter of the Hebrew Alphabet), the second three verses begin with beth (the second letter of the Hebrew alphabet), and continues that way throughout the chapter, repeating the complete Hebrew alphabet. Perhaps it was written this way to help the people remember more easily. A 'dirge' is a funeral song. Lamentations was a long, sad funeral song. ACTIVITY: The Tears Of The Weeping Prophet Materials needed: 9"x 12" tan construction paper, 9" x 12" light blue construction paper, marker, crayons, scissors, glue. Hand out tan paper. Write "The Tears Of The Weeping Prophet, JEREMIAH" and "Lamentations 1-5" at the top of the paper. Write "(Why Jeremiah Cried Over Jerusalem)" at the bottom of the paper. Hand out blue paper. Fold blue paper twice, so that seven or eight 'tears' can be cut out of paper. Write on each tear at a time: "Jeremiah's friends had become enemies. 1:2" "The beauty of Jerusalem departed. 1:6" "Jerusalem sinned a terrible sin. 1:8" "Jerusalem had no comforter. 1:9" "God was far from His people. 1:16" "Jerusalem's enemies were glad. 1:21" "Jeremiah's heart was faint. 1:22" Glue 'tears" on tan paper. Color.
Então o Espírito Santo disse a Filipe: — Chegue perto dessa carruagem e acompanhe-a. O funcionário perguntou a Filipe: — Por favor, me explique uma coisa!

This is the display I used for this lesson. It is the same set for the Resurrection of Jesus. I wrapped up one of the guys with gauze to be Lazarus, used Jesus and the two women. You can see it here. This lesson is about Lazarus and is found in John 11:1-45 and John 12:17-18. He had two sisters named Mary and Martha. They lived in Bethany. Mary and Martha sent for Jesus because Lazarus was sick. The message stated, “the one you love is sick.” Jesus loved Mary, Martha and Lazarus. But when Jesus heard about Lazarus being sick, He stayed two more days where He was. Lazarus died during that time, and he was buried before Jesus could visit him. Jesus told His Disciples that they were going to Judea. They asked Him “Are you sure? The Jews have been wanting to stone you.” Jesus told them it would be all right, He needed to go see their friend Lazarus. Lazarus is sleeping, and I will wake him up. They told Jesus that if Lazarus is sleeping, then he would get better. But Jesus told them that Lazarus was dead. Jesus told them that He was glad they weren’t there so they would believe what they see. And then He told the Disciples "Now, let’s go to him." When Jesus arrived at Bethany, Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Bethany was two miles away from Jerusalem. And many of those people had come to be with Martha and Mary to comfort them. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him. Mary stayed at the house. Martha told Jesus that if He would have been there, Lazarus wouldn’t have died. But she said, I know that whatever you ask God, He will give You. Jesus told her that her brother would live again. Jesus asked her if she believed that whoever believed in Him would live even though they died. Martha replied that she believed in Him. “I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who came into the world.” After she answered Jesus, Martha secretly went to find her sister Mary and told her that Jesus had come and was looking for her. Immediately, Mary went to Jesus. Jesus wasn’t in town yet; He was waiting for her where He had met Martha. The people who were with her, comforting her, thought she was going to the grave to cry about Lazarus. When Mary came to Jesus, she fell at His feet and told Him that Lazarus wouldn’t have died if He’d been there. When Jesus saw her crying, he felt sorry for her, and He was upset that she was so sad. Jesus asked her where Lazarus was laid at and the people said “Lord, come and see.” vs. Jesus wept. (The shortest verse of the Bible, but very important.) Jesus was upset, even though He knew He would raise him from the dead. It still upset Him. The people said, “See how much He loved Lazarus!” Some of them said if Jesus healed the blind, couldn’t He have kept Lazarus from dying? When they came to the tomb, it was a cave cut into the rock with a stone in front of it. This tells us that Mary, Martha and Lazarus had more money than the average family. This is the family burial place and only the rich could pay to have it cut out of the rock. Jesus was so upset when He came to the tomb. He said, “Take away the stone.” Martha said there is going to be a bad smell since Lazarus has been dead for four days! Jesus told her that she would believe after this. They took the stone away from the tomb and Jesus lifted up His eyes and said “I am thankful that You have heard Me. I know that You always hear Me. Because of these people standing here, I am saying this so that they may believe that You sent Me.” After that, Jesus said really loud “Lazarus, come forth.” Lazarus, who had been dead, came out with the wrappings around his hands and feet and face. Jesus said to unwrap him and the people that were there with Mary and Martha saw what Jesus had done and they believed in Him. The project is a cut and glue of Lazarus coming out of the tomb. I cut the rock, used my craft knife to make the slit for the rock tab and glued the rock cover before class. The students can lift the rock flap and will cut & glue Lazarus. It is available in color and black & white. You can download it here. For this lesson, I purchased gauze and let them wrap it around cheap plastic people I have found. Or, I have used pretzels and string cheese and let them wrap the string cheese around the pretzel. Click here to print the worksheet. We continue the Miracles lapbook today. The students will leave them in class until we finish the miracles lessons, then they take them home. Click on the lapbook to see it. I decided to limit this lapbook to the miracles that Jesus did to prove Himself. We will study Malchus, Resurrection of Jesus and Jesus Returns to Heaven, etc., but I did not include these. Papai do céu... (inicia a oração) Para os maiores: Sei que Deus me ama e me compreende. Minha oração eu sei que ouve e atende. Sei que Deus me ama, e me compreende. Minha oração. Sempre atende. No futuro, elas agradecerão. Easy cardboard DIY prop for walls of Jericho Bible story. Goes up and down like a drawbridge.
This week we continued using the awesome Jesus story book Bible which I cannot recommend enough for use at home or in Kid's Church. You can buy it here. I was teaching this lesson to the 4-8 year old age group with the under 3's joining in as much as they wanted and were able to. When the kids arrive there are lots of different blocks laid out for them to build with, lego for the older ones, Duplo, wooden blocks and also some random cardboard boxes to make bigger structures (which are more fun for knocking down!). This is an introduction to the story, when I told the story I reminded the children about the big towers and walls they made, just like the big high walls of Jericho! After a little time playing with these we are going to make our first craft which will also serve as a prop / something to keep their hands busy during the story. The kids each decorated a sheet of orange card however they liked using crayons and stickers and then we helped them roll them up and tape them into the shape of a horn like this! Very simple but they make an effective sound when you blow into them! During the story I got the children to play their horns each time the people of Israel marched around the walls of Jericho. After the story we moved back to the art table and I gave each child a template like this which I made in about 2 seconds with a ruler and sharpie and photocopied. I laid out lots of colourful pre-cut shapes which I salvaged from scraps from previous art projects (never throw anything away if you can help it!). Then the children "built" the walls of Jericho by sticking on the shapes with a glue stick. As well as reminding the children about the story by talking about it as they got creative, this was also a good time to talk about shapes and colours. I used a similar craft idea about 6 months ago when we learned about the Tower of Babel. Some of the children's finished masterpieces! Complete with cotton wool clouds :)

Esther is so much fun and there are so many different applications! Let's learn about a woman in the Bible called Esther. We can read all about Esther in the Old Testament book called Esther. There was a king named King Ahasuerus. He was having a great big feast (party or celebration). The feast lasted a long time! He invited his important people and servants to the feast. His queen was named Vashti. One day, the king was feeling happy and told some men to bring Queen Vashti to him, wearing her crown, so he could show his friends how beautiful she was. Queen Vashti refused to go to the king’s feast! You don't say no to the king! King Ahasuerus was so angry! The king's wise men told King Ahasuerus to make a new law. If the queen would not come to the king’s feast, then the king would give her royal position to someone else. He decided to find a new queen! All the beautiful women were gathered together and were brought before King Ahasuerus. King Ahasuerus liked Esther, and Esther was moved to the best place for the women in the palace. It took the women a whole year to get ready to go before King Ahasuerus! Once a woman went before the king, she couldn’t go before him again, unless HE called for her by name. Four years later, Esther went before the king again. The king loved her more than all the other women. King Ahasuerus put the crown on her head and made her the new queen. There was a man named Haman that talked the king into making a bad lad. The new law would hurt Esther and her people. When Esther learned about the law, she prayed and fasted (didn’t eat) for 3 days. Who did she pray to? God Then Esther went to see the king. Remember, people were not allowed to go to the king. He had to call for them. She was afraid but did the right thing for her people. The king held out his gold scepter and she touched the end of it. (I held out a scepter and let them touch it.) He told Esther that she could have up to half of his kingdom! But she just wanted to save her people. With Esther’s help, the law was changed, and her people were saved! Queen Esther was faithful to God, and she was well liked and considered great among the people. Lesson found in the Old Testament Book of Esther. I told the kids that we were doing something a little different for this lesson. We prayed, sang some songs, then they were allowed to eat a snack while I told the lesson. They all said they were hungry and thrilled to have food. I only bring in food when it applies to the lesson. I set the table with different crackers, Fruit Loops, cheeses, grapes and small bottled water. They enjoyed the 'feast'. I gave them beaded necklaces when we reviewed about Esther getting ready to see the king. They had their crown and the scepters I made. I made these a bit smaller than I usually do for my second grade classes. I bought the long dowel rods and cut them into 3 sticks. I glued these caps onto one end. I used this paint to make them gold and they loved them. I always give a speech about "It's not a sword or a stick. Do not hurt anyone with it." The review project I created for Esther is this scepter. You print (cardstock will work best) the one page color or black and white, cut and glue the ends together to make the scepter. The students will glue the pictures in order onto the scepter. (I put mine through a sticker maker and they put them on like a sticker.) There is a completed teacher's visual included also. Click here to print. I decided to create crowns for the king and queen lessons in this series. I kept them simple for preschool and because I will let them attach gems to them. This is an updated crown for this series. You can find the original below. They include color and black & white. Click here to download Queen Esther. Click here to download the above lesson. I totally changed this lesson when I was reviewing it just before class. What you read above is how I taught it. If you want the original shorter lesson, click below. Click here to download the original short lesson. Click here to download the updated visuals. All are not shown. There are over 50 visuals in the file and includes visuals for the whole book of Esther. Click here to download the pictures to color. (These are the same as the visuals but are black & white.)
One of the keys to getting anything to stick in our long-term memory is repetition. God, knowing the inclination of His people to forget, blessed them with what we know as the book of Deuteronomy. It literally means “the second law”, but it is often called the “book of remembrance”. Moses, at 120-years-old, over the […]
