Here is our list of ideas that we will use when making our plans for our homeschool week for Classical Conversations - Cycle 2, Week 3: History Eleanor of Aquitaine {via} For history this week, I think we may "act" out the crusades. After reading a little about the crusades, I think I will have one child represent Richard the Lion-Hearted, one child represent the Muslims, and one child represent the Jews. They will probably use very non-middle age weapons such as light sabers, but the pretending will be fun. {via} A little info where we can learn about the weapons and armor used in the Crusades. Here is an incredible homeschool resource page for ALL of World History. I will definitely be using this link for future reference. Middle Ages for Kids - some very simple info regarding the crusades Not sure this has any thing specifically to do with Eleanor of Aquitaine or Richard the Lionhearted, but I really like the idea of making this castle together! {via} Awesome timeline of the Middle Ages and Renaissance period (and important figures). Super helpful! Science Food Chain game and free printable from Teach Beside Me. Also recommends a couple of The Magic School Bus books. Food Chain idea from Bookish Ways in Math and Science FUNNY YouTube video just for pure entertainment. Merrick loves this video. ;) Geography I will probably end up just making some food from some of the western european countries we'll be studying this week. For example, I will make some crepes while we talk about France and a Tortilla Espanola (Spanish Potato Omelet) while we talk about Spain. But, here are some craft ideas as well: Ireland - Irish recipes here at DLTK (though, truthfully, I'd rather just pick up some Irish soda bread from the local store). I really like this idea from Choices for Children (picture below) for my younger kids. There's also a version for older kids in the shape of Ireland itself. England - Palace guard craft made out of toilet paper rolls by DLTK. Of course, we'd have to watch a YouTube video on the changing of the guard. And, I will most definitely have to throw in a video like this one! Watch the movie Robin Hood (I loved this movie as a kid!). Portugal - Some craft ideas from Culture Cottage. Spain - Since we will only be talking in very broad terms about these countries this week, I will probably tell them what stood out to me the most on my trip to Spain (many years ago) - the flamenco dancing and the bull fighting. I will probably just show them a couple of YouTube videos like this one (Flamenco Dance) and this one (Guitar) and this one (bullfighting - if we watch this one, we'll only watch the first 2 minutes). Then, we'll probably act out a flamenco dance performance where my daughter dances and my sons play the guitar (or dance). Scout, my daughter, will totally dig that! We might even have to give Marcos, my husband, a performance when he gets home! Here is a cool post on how to make maracas out of leftover plastic eggs from Easter. France - I like the idea here of making an Eiffel Tower out of Legos! I also like this idea from The Chocolate Muffin Tree of making a "stained glass window" like the one in Notre Dame. My husband and I just returned from Paris this past week and have lots of pictures to share with the kiddos of these windows (and all of Paris, really). There are lots of great Europe Unit Study boards on Pinterest. Here's a good one! Or, we could always do a Europe Lapbook! As usual, here is my disclaimer: I should mention...this is just a list of resources and ideas. We don't actually complete all of these activities. In a typical day, we have a Bible lesson, review the CC memory work, do phonics and math, and (perhaps) complete one craft activity or game that correlates to our memory work. We also spend time reading together. Merrick will be in the 2nd grade starting Fall 2013. The twins will be 4 years old. Aside from the Bible lesson, I do not expect any thing from the twins in regard to their formal education. If they choose to join us, they may. If they do not want to participate, they may play independently. I'm linking up to the Cycle 2 Weekly Link Up Page on Half-a-Hundred Acre Wood blog. It is one of the most helpful blogs there is for CC parents!

This guide teaches step-by-step drawing instructions for How to Draw Newton's Second Law of Motion. These drawing instructions align with Classical Conversations Cycle 2 Week 17 Science memory work but work with any curriculum studying this topic! This is a great way to keep kids of varying ages occupied while reading on the topic! Younger students can use the line drawing as a coloring page or hold it up to the window to trace it, then color. Older students can use the drawing guide to hone their drawing skills and create a final colored product they can be proud of! These drawings work wonderfully for student notebooks or as an illustration to accompany any copywork the teacher chooses. This file includes detailed step-by-step how-to-draw instructions, a black and white final drawing or coloring page, and a colored example drawing. Classical Conversations Week 17: How to Draw Newton's Second Law of Motion Newton's second law of motion states that force equals mass times acceleration. F = ma These drawing instructions are a wonderful resource to supplement science memory work from Classical Conversations (CC) Cycle 2. This is week 17 of Classical Conversations CC Cycle 2. The full guide with all 24 weeks is available here. Why Draw to Learn? Our guides are designed to help your students learn science facts while also learning how to draw them! Drawing dramatically aids knowledge retention! Studies show that drawing information can improve recall by more than double compared to just writing the information down! Draw and color science facts to make a notebook you can be proud of!
Learning can be so fun with these Science Printables! They are brightly colored, interactive, and easy to use. Perfect for little learners!
There are a lot of people asking me a lot of questions of what our homeschool curriculum involves. I am eager to share everything we are doing with our friends and family. Here are a few things we did last week and this week... History: Week 1: We learned about Charlemagne. My favorite coloring pages come from Google image searches and filtering for line drawings. Blaine colored these while I read about Charlemagne and practicing reciting/singing his history sentence for the week. Week 2: We learned about William the Conqueror. Blaine colored this image of William the Conqueror while I read. We also discussed feudalism and did a cut and paste activity. I can tell Blaine is definitely starting to absorb more of what I'm teaching him because last night, he jumped onto the sofa, threw all the pillows off, stomped his feet and declared that he was William the Conqueror and Vivienne was King Harold. It was basically the funniest thing ever. Geography: Week 1 - I made this "puzzle" (printable here) and laminated everything so we can reuse it. We also looked at everything on a globe and talked about how we live on the continent of North America. He really liked singing a song we downloaded from C3 and can identify all the continents and oceans! Week 2 - I made another puzzle for European bodies of water (printable here). He is doing very well with geography. He quickly (in one sitting) memorizes everything. English: Week 1 - We memorized 8 parts of speech. I made this pirate ship visual (printable here) with flaps that reveal parts of speech with a short description of their purpose. I laminated it so we can refer back to it throughout the year. Week 2 - We talked about how pronouns replace nouns, so I came up with this cut and paste activity. Blaine really seems to enjoy cut and paste activities, so we will probably be doing a lot of those. Art: Week 1 - We learned about the 5 shapes used to "build" a drawing (boy terminology). I made another cut and paste activity to categorize shapes. Week 2 - We did this mirror image exercise and took a trip to the tattoo shop to play on the big light table to create mirror images. Math: Week 1 and 2 - Skip counting by 1s, 2s, 3s, and 4s. I brought out the scissors and glue stick again with these projects. This was actually the first time I've let Blaine use scissors on his own. So far, he is ambidextrous but insists on cutting with his left hand. Maybe I should find some preschool lefty scissors if this keeps up. Science: Week 1 - Blaine memorized 7 of the world's biomes - this was one of his favorite subjects this week mostly because of a catchy song on C3. He is still asking to listen to it. I found a color by number project of North American biomes that he really enjoyed. I'm not sharing it because I really don't think it was accurate. But, at his age - I think the purpose was mostly to understand the world is made up of different biomes with various climates, animals and plants (more importantly being able to name them). And seriously - there is nothing cuter than a 4 year old saying "deciduous forest" Week 2 - We are learning herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. I made this with random clipart found online and we did some other worksheets that I downloaded from C3. He is connecting that the chicken we eat is/was an actual chicken. He did seem a little troubled by that. Latin: We are learning present tense verb conjugation endings. Nothing really fun to show along with that, but he knows it! I am starting to consider future foreign language curriculums to add on at home. Maybe in a year or 2. Suggestions welcome! Considering Spanish, French, or possibly Mandarin. That's it! Hopefully I will be posting every 2 weeks with what we are learning! Next week we start Hands On with Vivienne too!
Year 2 Week #5 Hibernation and more Today we did a project based on our science memory work. Everyone came in their PJ's to hibernate! We made a diorama of how animals adapt to environmental changes - which in our case was the start of winter. When the kids came in, they first stopped by the gym and "hibernated" inside the "cave" that we had made with some gym mats and blankets! We later used the cave to do our review game. To start our day we got our lapbooks out and sang, wrote, flipped and drew our way through Week#5. The next thing we did was begin our project. I had picked out various animals and the definitions we were learning, to place in our diorama. I provided pre drawn and cut construction paper shapes of a tree, log, cave, burrows and rocks to place the animals around. I also used cardboard that I cut into strips. One strip was used for giving the cave a 3D look by bending it around the construction paper cave and gluing it in place. Another strip was folded in half and the construction paper log was glued to that strip to create a hinged opening so you could see what would hibernate inside of the log. There were pizza boxes for each child to do their project on, that I got from a local vendor for free. I set out paint, tissue paper, foam, hot glue, markers, regular glue, sequins, pipe cleaners, puff paint, construction paper and cotton balls. The kids were given a sample of what they were going to be doing that I had laid out on my pizza box for Sarah. However, there was room for lots of imagination. To begin with, the Moms cut out their pictures of animals while the kids started on painting the background of their diorama. We used blues and greens to designate sky, pond and grass. Briefly I tied in perspective art by describing the horizon line between the two elements they were working on (grass/sky). The next thing they did was decide where they would place their various elements of tree, log, cave and rocks. Then they began pasting and hot gluing their items into place. The kids worked their imaginations as they put finishing touches and embellished their project. Such as; drawing their tunnels to their burrows, adding flowers to their grass, placing a sun (or some did a moon). To finish it off, I mixed up the puff paint! A favorite around Wonderful Wednesdays! The kids delved in, mixing and then adding their touches of clouds and snow to their masterpieces! I couldn't resist making "porridge" for the day's snack! After all doesn't hibernating bears bring to mind Goldilocks and the Three Bears??? It seemed these little bears thought this porridge was just right! Animals used in the diorama: Hibernating animals: A bear that went inside our cave, bats that hung from inside the cave, burrow animals used were snakes and squirrels, pond animals were turtle and frogs, animals in the log were lizard and spider and a bumblebee for underground below the tree. Migrating animals: Geese flying south, Butterflies flying to Mexico! Adapting animal: Ermine - we used camouflage as our means of adaptation in winter weather. He was placed near the rocks and pictures of him during the summer when his coat is brown and winter when it changes to white were used.

Link to PDF Here is the first of my Fill-in-the-Blank sheet. This is just Week 1 for Cycle 2, but the rest will be coming and I will post the whole file (when done) under Cycle 2 resources. At home, I use these the first couple days after CC and will use all week for my 1st grader this year. Put them in page protectors and let the kids go at them with a dry erase marker. The page protector helps me on my paper usage, since they fill them out a more than once. I will have them look up the information and copy it in the first couple of days. The two days before CC, I have them fill in the blank sheet with what they know. This lets me know if there is anything we need to work on before proofing. If you want a copy, you should just be able to click the "link to PDF" and save. You can also save the JPEG, but will have to make sure your printer settings are set to letter paper. Let me know if there are problems. Hope this helps you too! Oh...the answers are in your foundations guide! ;) (Don't want to mess with copy write issues!)
