There are a lot of people asking me a lot of questions of what our homeschool curriculum involves. I am eager to share everything we are doing with our friends and family. Here are a few things we did last week and this week... History: Week 1: We learned about Charlemagne. My favorite coloring pages come from Google image searches and filtering for line drawings. Blaine colored these while I read about Charlemagne and practicing reciting/singing his history sentence for the week. Week 2: We learned about William the Conqueror. Blaine colored this image of William the Conqueror while I read. We also discussed feudalism and did a cut and paste activity. I can tell Blaine is definitely starting to absorb more of what I'm teaching him because last night, he jumped onto the sofa, threw all the pillows off, stomped his feet and declared that he was William the Conqueror and Vivienne was King Harold. It was basically the funniest thing ever. Geography: Week 1 - I made this "puzzle" (printable here) and laminated everything so we can reuse it. We also looked at everything on a globe and talked about how we live on the continent of North America. He really liked singing a song we downloaded from C3 and can identify all the continents and oceans! Week 2 - I made another puzzle for European bodies of water (printable here). He is doing very well with geography. He quickly (in one sitting) memorizes everything. English: Week 1 - We memorized 8 parts of speech. I made this pirate ship visual (printable here) with flaps that reveal parts of speech with a short description of their purpose. I laminated it so we can refer back to it throughout the year. Week 2 - We talked about how pronouns replace nouns, so I came up with this cut and paste activity. Blaine really seems to enjoy cut and paste activities, so we will probably be doing a lot of those. Art: Week 1 - We learned about the 5 shapes used to "build" a drawing (boy terminology). I made another cut and paste activity to categorize shapes. Week 2 - We did this mirror image exercise and took a trip to the tattoo shop to play on the big light table to create mirror images. Math: Week 1 and 2 - Skip counting by 1s, 2s, 3s, and 4s. I brought out the scissors and glue stick again with these projects. This was actually the first time I've let Blaine use scissors on his own. So far, he is ambidextrous but insists on cutting with his left hand. Maybe I should find some preschool lefty scissors if this keeps up. Science: Week 1 - Blaine memorized 7 of the world's biomes - this was one of his favorite subjects this week mostly because of a catchy song on C3. He is still asking to listen to it. I found a color by number project of North American biomes that he really enjoyed. I'm not sharing it because I really don't think it was accurate. But, at his age - I think the purpose was mostly to understand the world is made up of different biomes with various climates, animals and plants (more importantly being able to name them). And seriously - there is nothing cuter than a 4 year old saying "deciduous forest" Week 2 - We are learning herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. I made this with random clipart found online and we did some other worksheets that I downloaded from C3. He is connecting that the chicken we eat is/was an actual chicken. He did seem a little troubled by that. Latin: We are learning present tense verb conjugation endings. Nothing really fun to show along with that, but he knows it! I am starting to consider future foreign language curriculums to add on at home. Maybe in a year or 2. Suggestions welcome! Considering Spanish, French, or possibly Mandarin. That's it! Hopefully I will be posting every 2 weeks with what we are learning! Next week we start Hands On with Vivienne too!

Tiger Picture to work on symmetry for Earth Day or an Animal Unit Study. 3 levels of difficulty for differenciation. No prep, just print, copy and use! For the level 1 the drawing is complete and the student must color symmetrically. For the level 2 half of the drawing and part of the other half are done and the student must complete and color symmetrically. For the level 3 half of the drawing is done and the student must do the other half and color symmetrically. This product is different from other symmetry products. The drawing is my own and is made geometrically so that the symmetry work is a real precision work and locating on the grid. Level 3 is challenging for elementary students and will be more appropriate for middle school students or gifted elementary students. This activity is a great addition to any math center and is perfect for early finisher, substitutes or homework. I didn't include my printables for Science and Art for Cycle 1 Week 1, so I'm doing them in a separate post, and I hope that's not too confusing! Science: Baby Bean Experiment from Van Cleave Science . I tutor an Abecedarian class (it's a fun class, but with ages 3, 4, 5, and 6), so I want to leave myself some grace to skip an overly-long explanation, but still provide children with all the information and ideas. I also don't want anything too "writing intensive", so in addition to demonstrating the experiment, I provided the children with a dry and wet bean to break apart and explore, as well as a few beans to plant and draw into their science journals at home. I sent home an explanation of what we were doing, along with pictures so the kids could follow along with the steps and concepts. Yay for iPhone pictures as a learning tool ;) I included a diagram of the bean parts in the back with numbered parts that I encouraged the kids to color when they got home (one color for each part) since we ran out of time. So then there was art. I have to admit that I'm super nervous about teaching art. I'm not really an artist and I'm not terribly comfortable pushing kids outside of their comfort zone where art is concerned, since I'm not in mine either!! This week's Cycle 1 Week 1 Art was OiLS, or "Basic Shapes". O for circles, i for dots and line, L for angle lines, and S for curved lines. I decided to fold a sheet of paper in half and then in thirds and let the kids fill in examples of each of the basic shapes. We didn't do a great job on creating an image using the basic shapes, and that was my fault. I offered several suggestions and with such a mixed age group, I think we'd have done better if I mandated that we were drawing a bird and then demonstrated each shape as we added it. We were at the beach the week before CC started, so I just hand-drew my charts, but you could just as easily print them.

 My Tree of Life as inspired by artist Jane LaFazio, using stencils.  One of my favorite motifs to use with students is tracing their hands as an element in an artwork. To me, hands are representative of the self, so students are able to put a bit of themselves into their artwork. Here are just a few ideas using hands as a motif. This may be what started it all...my friend Suzie created a series of inspiring hand paintings in college... raise your hand, please!  Trace hand on neon color copy paper, create sections using lines, zentangle with line patterns.  black and white circle of light mandala Trace hands from each side/corner so that they overlap in the center, section off with 4 lines, use 4 colors to shade each section. It is fun to see what personal symbols students come up with for their designs! overlapping hands with border, crayons, and watercolor The shading of white pencil on black paper gives such a powerful effect!  Using neutral or bright colors, it is always fun to see the cubist effects that result!  The variety of compositions created with this assignment are pretty amazing!  An idea from my friend Ruth, finish by zentangling all, or just the space around the hand...optional, add color. An idea from a student...trace hand over drawings of personal symbols, color with markers...I might just have to use this idea! Thanks M!

Advent Day 13 - Cycle 1 Ghiberti Flashback for Christmas Craft! Today we decided to delve backwards into some Cycle 1 antics for our Christmas craft project! So I decided a little Ghiberti today would be a fun review and a neat medium for the kids to work with. You all remember Lorenzo Ghiberti, right? He was that trained goldsmith turned sculptor from the late 1300's to early 1400's. He painted the baptistry doors at Florence Cathedral. Supplies Needed: Cardboard to size you want for picture (this is your base) Yarn or Wikki Stix Craft glue (if using yarn) Popsicle Sticks Pom Pom Tin Foil Black Paint/Paint Brush Steel Wool or Scrubby Glitter glue (optional) The kids first decided on a design - which was a manger scene. They used the popsicle sticks for their barn exterior and Jesus' manger. Then they decided on what characters/scene besides the baby Jesus in a manger they would have. One picked three wise men and the other a sheep with a shepherd. So they began forming their yarn into the design and gluing down the pieces to keep them in place. Once the design is in place it should look something like this..... Then we took large sheet of tin foil to place on top of the design and begin pressing down around the various yarn designs and craft sticks to make the images pop out. Once the outlines of all the shapes were made, then the foil was folded over and taped to the back to keep it in place. I wouldn't recommend doing that first because you will need some give from the aluminum foil as you press on the shapes -so wait till that part is done. Then you begin to add your black paint all over the design and let it dry. The next thing we did was add glitter glue to the stars and around Jesus' head. Once the paint dried, then we began to scrape off the black paint from all around the raised areas of the design using a scrubby. Once we were done this is what we had! (We lost a crew member :) to a doctor appt -so that one will have to be finished tomorrow.)

Today we kicked off our Wonderful Wednesday's Week #15. We started with our lapbooks as always. Two of my fabulous Mom's came up with a brilliant idea of putting all the answers onto peel-n-stick labels to help expedite writing/filling in blanks. We did a project today on the 7 tallest Mountains from our memory work for this week. I cut up some old boxes I had out in the garage and made long rectangles big enough to hold the models and the information for each model that they would be gluing down in front of them. I made a document with the 7 mountains that had the name, country, elevation and map. I also added a map of the world for them to note where each mountain was in the world view and a label that asks the memory work question. I next took egg cartons and cut out the "mountains" from each of them so each kids had at least 7. I gathered newspaper, tape, hot glue gun and paints/paint brushes. Then we let the kids glue and create their mountains model. We ended our day with a game of "review war"! Thanks to the fabulous Mrs. April! Click on this to download document

So in classical conversations, one of our art lessons is on OiLS. Not the oil pastel kind, the drawing component kind! This was awesome to me when I first learned about this. You really can break down everything you draw to those 5 components. Here is a quick cheat sheet to learning them: click HERE to download them. I had a cute fun little practice lesson with my kids before CC starts and it was so much fun! I can't wait to teach a whole class of these little guys and watch them draw! So for the first part of our 30 min segment we introduced the sheet above, the OiLS and let them practice them for about 3 minutes. Then I did some board drawings, instructing them to follow along. Here they are: The cute little mouse I learned on a facebook page : ART FOR KIDS, The Alligator I got from an ED Emberly book. The kids had fun Here are theirs, I really wish I would have had them use black marker, it would have looked so much better. So in our actual class that's what we will do: Then we did a final project as I instructed them in a clown fish:

Directions:1. Cut "fish-shaped ovals" from netting.2. Next, peel the adhesive cover from the boards and (sticky side up!) position the fish-shaped netting where you want your fish to be.3. Lay yarn around the edges of the netting to "draw" the outline of your fish.4. Add a top fin, if desired, and any other details.5. Press yarn firmly onto adhesive.6. Center aluminum foil over picture, leaving an equal margin on each side.7. Press firmly and rub well with fingers to pick up the texture of the fish.8. Fold edges of foil over the back of the board and fasten with tape.9. Color with permanent markers, beginning with the water first and then coloring the fish with contrasting colors. Use a black marker to create a "frame" around the outside edge. Add a wiggly eye!10. Tape a loop of yarn to the back for hanging, if desired.
