Hablemos de algo espectacularmente bello y lo mejor es que podemos sentirlo, se trata de, “El sótano de las golondrinas”. Es uno de los abismos naturales mas bellos del mundo. Esta caverna vertical se formo con el paso del tiempo por la erosión del agua sobre la piedra caliza del subsuelo, haciendo que el domo colapsara, dejando una abertura impresionante que al interior se ensancha para darle una forma cónica. El fondo de este sótano mide según los que lo saben, unos 300 metros de diámetro. La boca del abismo tiene aproximadamente 60 metros de diámetro y es sorprendentemente redonda, de fondo o de abismo por así decirlo tiene 512 metros (mas del doble de la altura de la torre mayor de la ciudad de México) y en caída libre son 376 metros hasta su oscuro fondo (el segundo mas profundo de México). Este sótano esta considerado el mas bello del mundo, y fue descubierto por ornitólogos texanos que estudiaban los patrones de comportamiento de las aves de la zona Huasteca, esto fue en el año de 1967. Se penetro por primera vez por hombres mexicanos en 1974 siendo Lorenzo García el primero .Isabel Vivian fue la primera mujer mexicana en llegar al fondo en 1978. Algo que lo hace espectacular son las aves que lo usan como refugio, pese al nombre de esta maravilla, la cavidad no hospeda golondrinas, sino una inmensa colonia de vencejos Apus Apus, y loros de la especie aratinga holochlora, conocidos como cotorras, los lugareños llaman a los vencejos, “golondrinas “, porque se parecen bastante. Al amanecer como a las 6 hrs. a.m. Miles de estas aves vuelan en círculo desde el interior del abismo, hasta llegar a la superficie, saliendo y dando un espectaculo natural, que atrae a miles de turistas. Al atardecer , realiza un vuelo en espiral para luego precipitarse, muchos en caída libre hacia sus nidos en lo profundo del sótano , produciendo un ruido ensordecedor , generalmente esto sucede entre las 5 y 6 hr p.m . Fue declarado Área Natural Protegida en el año 2000, dentro de una área de 285 hectáreas. Si tu quieres decender debes contar con buena condición física, allí hay expertos y equipo necesario que te ayudaran a hacerlo por una cuota de verdad accesible. La mejor manera para llegar ha este lugar, es en camioneta desde el pueblo de Aquismon, ya que la terraceria para llegar al sótano es de 12 Km., y tiene tramos accidentados para un auto normal. Generalmente la hora para descenderlo es entre las 9 AM y 15 PM, cuando las aves no están y así no molestarlas , si solo deseas visitar y recórrerlo por la superficie, también es una actividad muy recomendable. Las tarifas van desde los 10 pesos hasta 40 pesos por una pequeña tienda de campaña, para estar un rato allí encima de este sótano.
