It was such a privilege to make this Dacha quilt for RJR's "What Shade Are You?" blog. Working with all of these bright fabrics was so much fun! Don't you just love the way that they stand out against the freshly fallen snow? You can find the original blog post HERE on the Quilt With Love blog. I've had several people ask me if I was going to make a pattern for this quilt. That wasn't my original plan, but I decided to throw together a quick tutorial, for those who might be interested in making something similar. Although I love this quilt in solids, I can also imagine this as a scrappy quilt, so I'll give directions for an individual house block, and will also include basic guidelines for making the quilt as it is shown. For each house block you will need the following pieces: House One (1) - 3.5" x 6.5" One (1) - 2" x 2.5" Two (2) - 5.5" x 2.5" Door One (1) - 4" x 2.5" Background Two (2) - 3.5" x 3.5" To make the roof, draw a diagonal line on the back of each background square. Sew on the line, as shown below. Press back to make sure your blocks is square, then trim. Repeat on the other side to make one flying geese...or is the one flying goose? Haha. Sew the small house piece to the top of the door piece. Assemble the block as shown below. Block size is 6" x 8" (finished). You will need 49 blocks to make the quilt as shown. It measures approximately 57" x 72". For this design, I selected the 12 house colors from primary, secondary, and tertiary colors of the color wheel, in deep saturated shades. I used RJR Cotton Supreme Solids, which are listed on the Quilt With Love blog. IMPORTANT: You will need 1/4 yard of each fabric. Please note that 1/4 yard will allow enough to make 4 houses. If you do the math, you'll realize that only gives you 48 houses, so make sure that you have a little extra of one of the colors to make the 49th house. The cutting requirements for the house fabrics are pretty tight, so be mindful that you have a full nine (9) inches from which to cut. FABRIC REQUIREMENTS: HOUSE FABRICS - 1/4 yard - 12 different colors From each solid, cut the following. One (1) 3.5" strip, subcut into: Four (4) 6.5" x 3.5" (roof) Two (2) 2.5" strips, subcut into: Eight (8) 5.5" x 2.5" (house) Four (4) 2" x 2.5" (house) Four (4) 4" x 2.5" (door) BACKGROUND FABRIC - 2.5 yards Nine (9) 3.5" strips, subcut into: Ninety-eight (98) 3.5" squares Nine (9) 1.5" strips, subcut into: Forty-nine (49) 6.5" x 1.5" (horizontal sashing) Eight (8) 1.5" strips (vertical sashing) Note: you may be able to get by with only seven (7) cuts, if you use leftovers from the horizontal sashing. Cut and piece together to fit Seven (7) 4" strips (borders) BINDING - 1/2 yard I hope that you find this tutorial helpful. If you know me you also know that I am a fan of Bollywood music. The poetry-rich meaningful songs don't quite make a splash as much as the peppy foot-tapping numbers. And while the peppy songs make me smile, it is the poetic songs that will often hit me hard. There is the title song from the Hindi movie Fiza, which has the following line... Maine tinke uthaye hue hain paron par, aashiyana nahin hai mera. Translation - I am carrying twigs on my wings, I do not have a nest. It is a poetic way of saying, I am wandering. I have no home. It is not that she is homeless. It is symbolic of her yearning and her rootless state. Fabric Audition For many years I felt that way too. And whenever I heard the song, it struck a chord with me, so much so that I felt tears streaming down my cheeks. When I walked out of my troubled marriage many years ago, I felt uprooted. I went to school here in the US and changed jobs a few times. Felt independent and free but there was no place to call Home. I did not belong. I just longed...for home. A few at a time... Meeting and marrying Paul was one of the best things that happened to me. Yet, I felt that I was still carrying the twigs on my wings. Only after we bought a house, with our savings, with both our names on the deed, and our stuff/junk in every room, do I feel like I have come home...my home. Pink and Purple Houses The messier it is, the greater the sense of ownership. (Yes, that is why I don't clean...but that is another story). Now that I feel grounded (in a good way), I can listen to the song without tearing up. To celebrate this feeling, I wanted to make a quilt with houses. And I did. A few blocks at a time. Some purple and pink, some blue and yellow, and the neighborhood seemed to come together. Then I thought, this neighborhood needs trees. A treeless neighborhood would be sad. So I made some trees. Fabric Scraps - Transformed Won't it be nice if someone was waiting for you when you returned home? And that special someone would also keep an eye on your neighborhood. That is when I made this block. My favorite house I created these blocks a few at a time, using scraps, fat quarters and bindings leftovers. Bit by bit I built my neighborhood. The blocks added up and they waited, and waited some more. Lots of Trees Larger Trees - Assembly Line Just like your home (and your puppy) waits for you and is there for you when you return, so also these blocks waited for me to come around and make them into a quilt!!! The quilt is entirely scrappy. The gingham fabrics came from my mother-in-law's stash. The tree fabrics were remnants. Some of them were in fabric basket won at a guild meeting. And when I wanted a specific color, I bought a few fat quarters. Finished Top The making of this quilt has been a journey just like buying our house. Among other things, I wanted a north-facing entrance to the house, because it is considered auspicious in Indian culture. Paul wanted a house with a yard and without any Home Owners Association (HOA). Fortunately, we found a house that met both our requirements. We are homeowners However, unlike the house that belongs to both of us, the quilt is all mine!!! Puppies and Angels My favorite house and the tall trees It is mine for so many reasons. It is wonky. The roofs are made with HSTs, that were all cut on the bias (wonky), squaring was optional (wonkier), and the overall quilt is not square (wonkiest). Dappled Some houses had their rooftop points clipped in piecing. I am sure no one will want that :-D The backing is an old sheet bought from a Goodwill Store. Wonky, mismatched fabrics, scrappy, crooked, tucks in quilting, haphazard, very colorful, eye-popping bright = Preeti's Quilt. There are a total of 71 houses in 10 rows and about 46 trees. The finished quilt is about 70" by 90". I am in love... Paul: That house looks a bit crooked. Preeti: Remember, there is no HOA. Paul: Looks like there are no regulations. Preeti: You are not invited to this neighborhood party. Basting, in process Used my favorite batting - Warm & Natural. I quilted it using curvy lines, after I used a decorative stitch to secure the rows together. White Backing (Sheet from Goodwill) Paul, the model :-) The binding is leftover from a pillowcase I made for Divik, my nephew. With the white backing and the very Christmas-y binding, I think I just gave myself a Christmas present. Striped Binding Christmas in July - how appropriate. Oh no, did I do something appropriate??? That is so unlike me, tch, tch, tch... Here are few more pictures of the finished quilt. Yes, Paul is on a chair!!! Thank you, Paul Close-Up This block is for Jonesie, our cat See the Angel? Blue House and Yellow Dog Here is the label. I decided to call it "Homeful". Yes, it is like Hopeful but it is also the opposite of Homeless. I have laid down roots... Homeful!!! Floral Door, Doors with Disco Lights - My Neighborhood, No HOA, No Rules!!! Lots of Trees! Did you miss me? Lighting up my backyard Puppy Love Merry Christmas (in July) to Me!!! Homeful is on my bed and this is the one I will be sleeping under every night. I might even take it with me on car trips. Just like a favorite/familiar song that you want to hum on all trips, I want to make sure that I have my favorite comforting quilt with me at all times. Right here, wagging for you!!! Creating this quilt has made me so happy that I might just wag my tail!!! If you were a puppy, what would make you wag your tail? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I know. It's not even Halloween yet and this is looking very Christmassy. What can I say, Christmas is my favorite holiday, and when we're all coming down from our candy buzzes in a few days, it will be time to kick into all-out holiday crafting mode, so why not get a head start? Don't you love a cute house ornament? I made a little fabric house last year, but it bugged me that the door and embroidery disappeared into the bottom of the house (Exhibit A), so I changed the design to avoid that problem. These scrappy house ornaments don't take very long to make, and they do include a hanger, I just tucked them under for the photo above. I mentioned before that I was in the mood for a tutorial, well...here it is! Fabric House Ornament Tutorial Materials: Pattern (click here to get pattern) Quilting cotton scraps for house back, roof, window, and door Fabric with numbers or fabric selvage for house number Linen, linen/cotton blend, or cotton quilter’s linen for house front Wool or wool-blend felt scraps for bird 10” length of ribbon, 3/8” to 1/2" wide (satin, grosgrain, velveteen, picot edge, twill tape, etc.) Rick rack (1/2" wide), miniature pom pom, or other trim Wonder Under fusible web (1/8 yard) Sheer weight or lightweight fusible interfacing (1/8 yard) All purpose thread Embroidery thread Button Polyfill or other stuffing material Tools: Scissors, rotary cutter/quilting ruler/cutting mat (optional), sewing machine, iron/ironing board, pins, seam ripper, hand sewing needle, disappearing fabric ink, chopstick or turning tool *Seam allowances are 1/4" unless otherwise noted, finished house is 4-1/2" tall, not including chimney. *Always backstitch/backtack at the beginning and end of each seam. Instructions: HOUSE 1. Cut a piece of fusible interfacing slightly larger than the house pattern piece. Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the linen with a hot iron according to package instructions. Press with iron on the linen side until the interfacing is completely fused. Use a ruler and rotary cutter to cut around the house pattern. 2. Draw the cutouts at the bottom of the house with disappearing fabric ink (the cutouts are 1/2" x 1/2"). Cut on the lines with scissors. Cut another house from quilting cotton (there is no need for interfacing for the cotton house). ROOF 1. Place a length of rick rack or pom pom trim on the linen house fabric, indicated on the pattern with a dotted stitch line. Center the trim over the line. I find it helpful to draw a line with a fabric pen 1-3/4" from the top of the house (the solid line on the roof of the house pattern). The top of your medium sized rick rack should meet this line, as well as the roof fabric when you place it over the rick rack (see Step 2). Mini pom pom is a little narrower than rick rack, and so sits a little lower than 1-3/4". 2. Place the roof fabric on top of the trim, right sides together, with the edge of the fabric 1/4” above the stitch line. Sew a 1/4” seam along the stitch line. 3. Fold the roof fabric up. If you use rick rack, go ahead and iron the fabric. If you are using pom pom trim or other synthetic trim DO NOT PRESS WITH IRON!!! Pom pom trim melts very easily. Finger press the fabric only. 4. Turn the house over, and trim the roof fabric to match the outline of the house. 5. Turn the house back over and machine baste the roof fabric in place, very close to the edge of the house. DOOR, WINDOW, & HOUSE NUMBER 1. Cut a piece of Wonder Under slightly larger than the appliqué piece. 2. Adhere the Wonder Under to the wrong side of the appliqué fabric with an iron (bumpy side of Wonder Under to wrong side of fabric). Let cool. Lift up an edge of the paper backing to loosen it from fabric. 3. Cut out the piece of fabric that is fused to the Wonder Under. 4. Remove the paper backing from the fabric. Place the pattern piece on the sticky side of the fabric and cut around it. 5. Remove the pattern and iron the appliqué in place on the front of the house. Do this for the window, door, and house number, using the pattern as a guide for placement. DO NOT decorate your house below the line marked on the pattern, and remember to keep the iron away from any heat-sensitive trims! 5. Using a straight stitch on your machine, sew around the outside edge of the appliqué, just off the fabric edge. Sew a second line just on the inside of the fabric edge. For the door, I used thread that matched the door on the inside of the fabric, black on the outside. For the window, I used black thread only. I sewed pretty fast, not aiming for a super straight line, I like the hand drawn look of wobbly lines. For the house number, I only sewed one seam, on the inside of the fabric edge. BIRD 1. Cut a bird from felt and place it on the house. Sew in place by machine with matching thread, just on the inside edge of the felt. 2. Divide the embroidery floss and use three strands for the bird. Hand embroider beak, feet, and wing with backstitches. 3. Make a French knot eye. BUTTON DOORKNOB 1. Add the button last so you don't have to worry about bumping into it while sewing the birdie or other appliqués. CHIMNEY & HANGER 1. Fold chimney fabric in half. Sew across the top and down the side with the raw edges. 2. Trim corner and seam allowances. 3. Turn right side out and press. 4. Place chimney upside down where indicated on the pattern, right sides together. Sew in place very close to the edge of the fabric. Fold ribbon hanger in half, place on the top and center of the roof and sew in place very close to the edge. 5. Alternate method: you may press under the top and side edges of the chimney fabric 1/4", right sides facing out, and hand sew the chimney closed with a ladder/blind stitch before attaching to house. FINISH 1. Place the front and back of your house right sides together and pin. Make sure your ribbon will not get sewn into the seams. Sew around the bottom, sides and top of the house, leaving a 1-1/2” turning hole on one side. DO NOT sew the notched cutouts yet. 2. Reach inside the house to pull open the cutout on one side. Flatten it so the seams match up, and the seam allowances go in opposite directions. Sew across this short straight edge with a 1/4” seam allowance. Repeat for other side. Make sure the seam allowance on the bottom of the house is folded the same direction on both sides. 3. Turn the house right side out, stuff, and close the turning hole with a ladder stitch. 4. You're finished! Hang your ornament on a tree, doorknob, wall or stocking hook. Happy homemaking! Kim P.S. The number fabric is Annie's Farm Stand Seed Catalog from Lakehouse.
