Hello everyone and welcome to my blog. I hope, wherever you are, that you are experiencing some lovely weather. Adelaide has been cold and overcast for weeks but, today, we finally have some sun!! It's still pretty cold though so all I can say is "Bring on the summer"!!!! OK, down to business ... I have another card to share with you. A very masculine and quite 'grungy' card as my title suggests. I distressed all the edges with my Ingvild Bolme Distressy Tool and inked them with 'Gathered Twigs' Distress Ink. A bit of Heather Jacob influence here I think, but still with my own stamp on it!! If you don't know Heather (Can't really imagine that, but) HERE is the link to her blog if you'd like to take a look!! You won't be sorry, as she creates the most gorgeous and inspiring projects! Looooveeee her work!! The papers used are from Prima's 'Engraver' Collection. The tickets were fussy cut from the papers then I crumpled them a little, inked the edges and slipped them in between the layers. Used a spatula to add some 'Clear Rock Candy' Distress Crackle and, when that was dry, I went over it with 'Gathered Twigs' Distress Ink to bring out the cracks. I then just used my finger to swipe some gesso around the edge. I love how the gesso also 'cracked' when it dried. Used the same technique on the belly band as you can see. I've had the metal key and the clock in my stash for a little while and am not sure where I got those but I really love that key. Was a bit sorry to use it as it is the only one I have but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet don't you?? Here's another closie of the 'crackle' effect. I really love it and you'll be seeing a lot more of this in my work!!! Decorated the inside with wide bands of the paper which were border punched with the 'Optic Dot' Punch by Martha Stewart. Then I added a bit more texture with Tim Holtz 'Latticework' Stencil and 'Frayed Burlap' Distress Ink and, again, wiped a little gesso around the edge on one side. A different view ... lying down ... ... and standing up!! This is the first of two 'grungy' masculine cards I created. The second is similar to this but of course a bit different as well and I will show you that one further down the track. Thank you so much for visiting today and I do hope you enjoy the rest of your day. Take care and God Bless.

If you love a good sketch as much as I do then you'll love this week's new challenge at Just Add Ink. The sketch Narelle has created is full of possibilities. Even better, most of the team are off to Stampin' Up! convention next week so this challenge runs for two weeks. That means more time for you to try it. Lookie! Here's what I made with it - a very clean & simple creation with a touch of gold for a lovely friend's birthday. I really hope she likes it....& doesn't check my blog before I see her today - shhhh! I used the butterfly as my circle element from the sketch, but also added a circle behind it to ground it to the card. I love that the Birthday Bash DSP has little gold foil elements in it which add a little more subtle bling. You can perhaps see the gold shimmer a little better in this pic. My only uncertainty with the card was that I didn't want a sentiment to detract from that beautiful gold butterfly so I didn't add one. It felt weird to leave it off, but hopefully the fun gold embossed sentiment from Balloon Bash I added inside made up for any absence on the front. I don't know why this looks pink in the pic - maybe the early morning pic or bad photo editing did it ;-) So what do you think? Did I do justice to the sketch challenge? Leave me a comment to let me know where/whether you'd add a sentiment. Do also check out all the lovely creations by all the design team & remember we'd love you to try this sketch challenge yourself. Thanks for visiting today. Hope to see you back here soon. Exploding Box Class - "An Exploding Year" - by Anso Please feel free to use these instructions to make your own boxes. You are free to link to this page from any forum etc if you wish. Please do NOT copy this information and/or photos to use for your own classes/forums/webpages without permission. Please also note that I'm not claiming that I have invented the exploding box, but these simple step-by-step instructions and photos are mine. Class Supply list: For the box you will need: * 3x 12x12 sheets of cardstock For the lid you will need: * 1x 12x12 sheet of cardstock (though this can be A4 also, you only need a 6 ¼”x6 ¼” piece) Tools: * trimmer * scissors * scoring tool, like a bone folder etc, or the scoring blade if you have a Zision trimmer or similar * glue (I would recommend double-sided tape PLUS a wet glue like Glossy Accents, Diamond Glaze etc) * 4 paperclips (to hold card in place while drying) – optional * corner rounder – optional * inkpad for edges of card - optional I would recommend that your four sheets are either exactly the same colour, or different shades of the same colour. Of course, if you want more of a rainbow effect (!) you could use four sheets of totally different colours. I have used two different shades of green Bazzill. The class with mainly focus on how to make the exploding box itself. However I will also supply some photos of my finished box. If you wish to continue after the class and decorate your box you will need: about 5-6 sheets of co-ordinating patterned paper (assuming you want to cover the “pages”) up to 26 small photos (assuming: one on each “flap”(front and back), one in the middle of the box and one on the top of the lid) ribbon to go around the lid (optional) any other embellishments etc that you want to use. The class is called “An Exploding Year” because my box will feature “random” photos from the past year…so it’s kind of like a summary of a “year in a box”. First of all – please don’t be put off by how long the instructions are. It’s only because I have made them VERY simple and step-by-step with lots of pictures. Making the box and lid (not decorated) only took me 30 minutes. And then I had to stop all the time to take photos of the different stages. Normally I work in metric, but for making this box it’s actually easier to make it using inches…so that’s what we’ll do. Ready? 1. First we’ll do the box itself. Take your three sheets of cardstock and cut them as follows: • one sheet to 9 x 9 inches • one sheet to 8 5/8 x 8 5/8 inches • one sheet to 8 ¼ x 8 ¼ inches 2. Now score each sheet according to the measurements below. You score on all four sides (see photo below). • score the 9 x 9 sheet, 3 inches in from each side • score the 8 5/8 x 8 5/8 sheet, 2 7/8 inches in from each side • score the 8 ¼ x 8 ¼ sheet, 2 ¾ inches in from each side 3. Following your scored lines, cut off all four corners on all three pieces. 4. At this point (and this is optional) you might want to ink the edges (don’t forget to do both sides!) and/or round the corners. 5. Now you need to glue together your pieces. It’s easiest if you start by putting the smallest piece on to the middle piece and then the medium (+smallest) piece onto the largest one. I would suggest you use double-sided tape for this. You ONLY put your tape/glue on the MIDDLE square. Like this: …and don’t forget you do NOT need glue on the back of your largest piece. Once you have put them together, you should end up with something looking like this: 6. Fold up the edges of your scored lines. 7. Now you can put the box to one side. It’s finished for you to continue decorating now or later. Onto the box lid: 8. Take your piece of cardstock for the lid and cut it to: 6 ¼ x 6 ¼ inches 9. Now score the lid, 1 ½ inch in from each of the four edges. 10. Right, this might be a bit tricky to explain in words, but the photo below should help you. TURN YOUR CARD OVER and you need to score from the tip of each corner, diagonally, until you meet your scored “corner” lines. See photos: 11. Fold all your scorelines and pinch the corners and fold them inwards. See photo: 12. Glue the corners in place. I found that double-sided tape was NOT strong enough for this (it holds for a little while and then lets go) so I would recommend a wet glue, something like Glossy Accents or Diamond Glaze for this. You can either hold the corners for a little minute until the glue is dry enough to hold the corners in place, or you can use some paperclips to hold the corners in place while drying. ...your lid should now be finished and look like this: And your finished complete box should look something like this: If you want to continue decorating your box, I would recommend the following measures for your paper (I’m swapping to metric now since it’s easier to be more exact): • one 7,5x7,5 centimetre square for the top of the lid • one 6,5x6,5 centimetre square for the centre inside your box • eight 7x7cm squares for your largest “pages” • eight 6,7x6,7cm squares for your medium “pages” • eight 6,5x6,5 cm squares for your smallest “pages” Round your corners and/or chalk your edges if wanted. I have used Chatterbox papers for mine and this is what my box looks like decorated: I have used small photos in mine. I used 20 photos in my box. One on each page (not on the lid, centre square, or the four sides that makes up the outside of the box) and I printed my photos: 8 photos to a 15x10cm photo (6x4 inches). Very easy if you have an Epson PictureMate. Each little photo measures: 5x4 cm. And here is my finished box: I hope you have enjoyed my class and thank you so much for taking it! Anso
Learn to make pop up flower bouquet cards for Mother's day or any special occasion. Print then cut the free templates to DIY your own pop up flower cards.
By popular demand I've tried to make this tutorial 'Idiot proof' and have tried to think of every little detail. If anyone has any problems ...
I've put this tutorial together from various online sources and a few little tricks I've learnt along the way, on capturing the best side of your cards. Please note I'm no professional photographer - so laymen terms will frequent here, I hope you don't mind! If you're a scrapbooker I have a similar short tutorial for you too. Click here to check it out. Some of the same old rules first: Rule 1: Natural Light! Why would you take a photo of your creation in the dark? We want to see all those beautiful colours, the textures - not shadows! You don't need to go out and buy yourself a light box or a snazzy camera - let the light do the work for you. Great light is just a small step away - like the shade of your back patio for example. Direct light beaming down on your creation is a No-No - it will wash it out, create ugly shadows - but shade is perfect. Other light tips: Don't use your flash - PLEASE! Just like direct natural light beaming down on your creation, it will wash a lot of your detail out or create ugly shadows. Trust me, I've been down this path many, many times. If it's night time, just wait until the morning to take your photo, it will be worth the wait. Use the MACRO setting - especially with cards. This is usually the little flower on your settings dial. All camera's are different - so play with the different settings.Rule 2: Take LOTS of photo's Everyone loves eye candy. There's nothing better than seeing all the little details you (and we!) love about your creations up close. That's why! Rule 3: Dress it Up & Fill The Frame It doesn't matter what kind of camera you have - it could be a $100 point and shoot to a $1000+ DSLR, if you fill the frame with your card — get close enough so the card fills at least 75% of the viewfinder — you'll make the best use of whatever camera you have. Dressing It Up Got patterned paper? Chances are, you have a few sheets stashed away somewhere (hee!). Again, you don't need a light tent - a couple of sheets of 12x12 white card stock and you're half way to having a fail-proof, basic backdrop for your creation. I always keep two Whisper White 12x12 sheets in a protective case at all times (see below) - just in case. It's a great 'grab bag' for when I need to run out the back and shoot a picture quickly. Because I used Stampin' Up!s Haiku patterned paper on my card, I've grabbed some contrasting DSP from the same range for an alternative backdrop. Have a play when you're shooting your creations! Sometimes white works well, but for this particular card I felt it needed a little more of a kick. All I have done here for my 'temporary photo shoot' space, is clear away some paint tins and copper piping on a table, laid one sheet down flat (on protector sheet - it's grubby out there ATM), the other sheet is propped up against any flat, sturdy surface (in my case, an old mirror). I placed my card on the bottom page, squatted down so I was level with the card and took my photo. White Backdrop. (Please excuse my messy back patio - we never seem to stop fixing the house up). Photo after cropping & editing. (As my 6 year old would say: Boring!)Now, if you want to get really fancy, you only need one sheet of white 12x12 and a piece of pretty patterned paper and you can do something like this: This is the exact setup I used for the photo at the start of this post. Primitive, but it works for me.Do you see how my card is further away from the patterned paper sheet this time? This is so when I focus on the card (macro setting preferably) the background is out of focus, thus the main focus being on the card. Rule 4: Focus Nothing can save it if you don't get the image in focus. This is where the MACRO setting comes in mighty handy - it's the 'flower' setting on most cameras. Rule 5: A Little Editing Goes a Long Way The legendary Karen Giron directed me towards a software program called GIMP, it's really easy to navigate through (well, if I can use it I'm sure anyone can figure it out) and you can download it for free here. Please check out the end of this post for a basic way to fix up your photo's with GIMP. Thanks for tuning in, if you have any additional tips on photography, please share.
