Dear Blogger Friends, Hope you are all doing well and are starting to enjoy the festivities of this holiday season! I absolutely looooooove this time of year! I am slowly wrapping up my circus unit (one more cute idea/freebie to come!) and have begun looking into my holiday activities (great ideas/freebies to come!). Seeing as though I am slightly in between units at the moment, I thought it would be nice to share something I do each day during my morning routine! As a cycle one teacher, my main focus is to help my students learn and improve upon reading and writing skills. I do so by having my students take part in many daily 5 and balanced literacy activities. Furthermore, I have a phonics routine! This can be done at the beginning of each day, during calendar time. Everyday, my students review the jolly phonics (b, s, t, etc...) sounds as well as other more difficult sounds (ee, ea, ough, ow, etc...). My bestie, Mrs. Leslie (I think I've mentioned her before, hehe), has so graciously shared some wonderful sound posters (free of course). These are displayed on the wall and a designated student (usually the V.I.P for the day, also courtesy of Mrs. Leslie!) points to the sounds and the students say each sound. We say "oo" as in "tooth," thus helping students remember the letters and sounds. More specifically, when they are reading or writing, we can refer back to the sounds cards. For instance, if a student wants to write the word "booth" and is stuck on the "oo" sound, I say: "oo, like in tooth!" The students usually refer to the sound posters and are then able to write the sound correctly. Click here to download Mrs. Leslie's Sound Posters Click here to download Mrs. Leslie's V.I.P. Student Another great freebie by Mrs. Leslie, is the mini sound chart. It is a great resource to have in writing folders and around the classroom for reference. It includes all the same sounds as the posters with the added bonus of fitting all on the same page! Click here to download Mrs. Leslie's Sound Chart I have also made small sound cards that can be cut and used as flash cards. Once again, they include all the above sounds (bottom portion of the poster) and are without pictures. These are used after a certain knowledge of the sounds has been attained. It is a good daily practice for the sounds and can be sent home. I use these with my students who are having a little more difficulty remembering the sounds. A great tool to use when the resource teacher is in your classroom. Also fun to use when the students are in centers and you want to work one-on-one with a struggling student. Click here to download FREE Sound Cards Hope these prove to be helpful for some of you out there! Be sure to continue to check out my blog and Mrs. Leslie's for more great ideas!
It's tutorial time once again. I realized that I didn't have a broom in the Colonial Kitchen. We can't have that! So you get to make several types of brooms/mop along with me. There are two types of broom in the photo. The colonial broom on the left and the modern broom on the right. They are both made from the infamous Penelope needlepoint canvas. You will also need some 1/16" dowel or a bamboo barbecue skewer cut into 4" lengths , some embroidery thread and if you are making the modern one you will need some fine wire and a scrap of wood about 1/4 x 3/4", the grain running lengthwise. The crochet thread is if you want to make an old fashioned rag mop. The first thing you do is cut a piece of needlepoint canvas 15 holes by 35 holes. The 15 will run on the straight unwoven threads and the 35 will be on the woven. Next you run two lines of running stitches the length of the canvas on the 8th and 9th holes from the bottom. Then you run glue on the backside of the stitched area and fold it around the scrap of wood. I used 1/16th bass wood left over from the armoire. The canvas should go around twice. After the glue dries, take a pair of tweezers and pull out all of the threads below and above the stitched area. Leaving one course of woven threads on either side of the stitches. Put some glue on the end of the dowel and stick it down into the area above the stitches and fix it to the wood scrap and let it dry. Pull up all of the strands of canvas above the stitch line and wrap fine wire around it and the handle. I marked the broom to indicate where you should start wrapping. You will go up the handle and end at the top of the bundle. The mop and the colonial broom are done the same. The mop is done with crochet cotton and the broom is done with the threads that you pulled out of the modern broom. The handles are cut 4" long. If you want to paint the handle do it before you start and let it dry. I don't normally measure or count for this one. I just wrap enough crochet cotton around two fingers to make a pretty full mop or broom. Put some glue on about 1/4" of one end of a 4" dowel. Glue the threads with the long part towards the top of the handle. Next wrap the bundle about 1/4" from the end with matching thread. I used contrast so that you could see what I was doing. When it is dry pull all of the long threads down over the tied part. Arrange them to cover evenly all around. Then wrap with matching or contrasting thread. and glue or tie off. There you have it. Two brooms and a mop. Now get to work! Actually the brooms do a pretty good job sweeping a mini house. I've got to go clean house now. See you tomorrow.
Hello my dear friends, seriously ~ I am hooked! Hooked on crocheting mini flowers from a pattern I made up this morning and now I just can't seem to want to stop making these tiny blooms. It takes not even 5 minutes to have one done. Right now I have no idea what I am going to use them for but I am sure something will pop into my mind. I first learnt how to crochet when I was 8 or 9 years old in school (yes, in those days we were still taught how to sew, knit, crochet and cook at school, something I think they should bring back, I actually learnt how to sew when I was about 5 years old and my Grandma taught me how to ) and I have always loved to crochet. When I was a teenager I would crochet large doilies or tablecloths and sell them to make a bit of extra pocket money. These days I still like to crochet but nothing too big but I do love making smaller pieces like snowflakes, little hearts or like these little flowers now. Take a look ... ... aren't they just so neat and tiny?! These could be made plain and then you could dye them any color you would like either with food coloring or even Easter egg colors! They could be used to embellish tags or pincushions or anywhere you would like them to be! And you can use them to make these ... ... an old idea with a new twist ... ... instead of using little flowers of paper or book pages you can use these to make your little flowers pins! And because I love to create and I think I am a happier person because of it I would like to share how to make these tiny flowers with you today. I am sharing the instructions two ways ... ...once as a graphic with the crochet symbols and secondly as written instructions as well . How to make a tiny flower ... ... you start off with a magic ring/circle ~ if you don't know how to make a magic circle you can find many videos on 'how to' on the net. There is only one round you need to crochet for this flower ... ... form a magic ring ~ into this ring crochet ... 3 chain stitches, one double crochet, 3 chain stitches, one slip stitch. Repeat this 4 more times ~ making the 5 petals for the flower ~ finishing with a slip stitch. Now just fasten off, tighten the magic ring by pulling the tail of the thread, cut off and you are done with your little flower. I hope my instructions are written so you will be able to make this little flower and now all you have to do is find something you want to embellish with them. I hope you are well and life is treating you kind. Have a peaceful and creative day, Karen B.

*Updated 3.9.217 I came across a blog post about using fans and scarves recently and it inspired me to look again at a previous post I had about using Movement Cards I created a couple years ago. The original post is here. I have many different kinds of ribbon streamers but all were homemade. My favorite are made out of dowels and have fishing bobber atttachments (they twirl!) so don't get wrapped around students arms! I have also attached ribbons onto new elastic hairbands, and these work well for going around the wrist, although I prefer the ones on sticks as students have more control "drawing" with them in the air. Here is how mine are made: 6 - 7 feet of ribbon works perfectly and will not get tangled! The silver stick is a yard stick (spray painted silver for the North Skelton Sword Dance). And here is how the fisher bobber attachments look once placed: Lots of music can be made into a fan/ribbon/scarf dance, from traditional instrumental folk recordings to classical pieces, from Indian folk to Spanish flamenco music. Here is one idea for using a piece with the movement cards: Tale of Two Villages Source: Music for Creative Dance by Eric Chappelle, Contrast & Continuum, Volume 1, available from itunes Formation: Individuals scattered around room Prepare for movement: Move only arms to the beat for 8 beats, teacher plays drum for 8 beats Move only one leg, etc., experiencing various levels of movement (high, middle, low), shapes created with body (circle, triangle, etc.), and ways of moving (twist, leap, jump, walk, bend, slither, sway, melt, etc.) A Section: Non-locomotor movement (stay in place, move body to the beat) B Section: Locomotor movement (travel and move body to the beat) “Notice what your neighbors are doing, try something you see someone else doing” Discuss words to describe movement, discuss the activity; lead to discovery/labeling of same/different, “A” and “B” sections of music. Another day use ribbon wands and UPP; half the class has ribbon wands, half the class has UPP. Ribbon wands will watch as teacher changes shape cards below * on A section (mbira/kalimba playing on recording) UPP players will improvise on B section (drumming) Movement Cards: Right click to save, import into powerpoint or other graphics-friendly program, enlarge, print onto cardstock, laminate and cut apart!

I can't wait to use this (review) activity with my Precalc class. As the students come in the room, I'll hand them a parabola graph card. They will go to three different areas and pick up the equation card, the axis of symmetry card and the vertex card. There are only 12 of each, so I made two sets. One set is shown and the other one is printed in blue, green, teal and purple. I will post the answers on the smart board for them to self-check. This isn't my original idea. Credit to follow...
