Today I headed to Opus (artist's supply store) in Langley with Jeremy. He wanted to pick up acrylic paints and canvasses ... he's planning on painting a set of three geometric design panels for his new apartment. I found a nice piece of thin balsa wood and used it in today's card. I wasn't sure if it was too thick to cut with dies, but after running it through a few times, the Big Shot compressed the wood enough that it was able to cut all the way through. Just love the look of the wood pieces on the card ... and the great thing about balsa, is that it is extremely lightweight - perfect for embellishing a card. Today's card is for the Color Throwdown Challenge (CTD197 - Crumb Cake, Calypso Coral, Cajun Craze, Kiwi Kiss). I just love the combination of these colors! I used mostly dies for my card (and again I used my newest toy, the flourish die from Cheery Lynn - it is my favorite die I have!!). I also used the birdcage die (and bird) that I've had for a while, but haven't used yet. I still have several unopened dies ... need to get on that!! Hope you like today's CAS card. "Flourish Birdcage" Stamp: Vintage Labels (SU!) Paper: White cardstock (C.C. Designs); Basic Black, Kiwi Kiss, Cajun Craze, Everyday Enchantment DP (SU!) Ink: Basic Black, Crumb Cake, Kiwi Kiss (SU!) Accessories & Tools: Big Shot, Nestabilities Labels Two (Spellbinders), Fanciful Flourish die (Cheery Lynn); Birdcage and bird dies (Poppy Stamps), Hydrangea punch (Martha Stewart); balsa wood, mat, stylus, glue, and dimensionals I ran the balsa wood through my Big Shot with the Nestabilities Labels Two and bird dies and then sponged both pieces with Crumb Cake ink. I cut out the Flourish die from Kiwi Kiss cardstock and then sponged the edges with Kiwi Kiss ink. I die-cut the birdcage from Basic Black cardstock. The blossoms were punched from Cajun Craze cardstock and Calypso Coral DP from the Everyday Enchantment paper series and then molded using my mat and stylus. I mounted all the pieces as shown, tacking down the flourish, birdcages and flowers with glue and popping up the bird to add depth. The whole image was mounted on the cardbase and popped up for added dimension.

I've created this card using several Marianne Creatable Cutting dies which you can get from FatCatsCardCorner. The bird cage I gave some shaping to so it didn't just sit flat on the card, I also rubbed a bit of metallic rub on with my finger to give it a bit of an aged look (not sure that worked :)) ). The birds I have coloured with prisma pencils and used tiny black pearls for the eyes. The large flowers I made with the Rose and leaf die set and the leaves were cut with the Sizzix Flowers, Branches and Leaves set. The brick wall is background is an embossing folder called Bricked from Sizzix.

I know we cardmakers start creating for Spring long before the first crocus peeks its head, but I think it's safe to say Spring is finally coming for real to Virginia, at least! Today's card has been sitting on my work table partially assembled for what seems like forever, mocking me, almost, for not getting it finished. Today was the day! Here's a quick how-to just to show how easy it was. Most of the supplies I used are available at Stamper's Dream. 1. Cut background designer paper panel to A2. I used a pattern from Prima's Botanicals collection. 2. Crumple the full panel and distress the edges with both ink and a distressing tool. I used Tim Holtz's Old Paper and Tea Dye Distress Inks by Ranger, along with an edge distressing tool. 3. Machine stitch around the panel twice in irregular fashion. 4. Adhere a length of ivory trim, ivory crinkled seam binding and May Arts natural burlap string vertically along the left. Finish off string and seam binding with double bows. Adhere to card base. 5. Top seam binding bow with a Prima Pebble from the Botanicals collection. 6. Die-cut tag using JustRite's Happy Everything custom Spellbinders dies and stamp sentiment from JustRite's Nature's Nested Sentiments in light aqua. Ink edges with Old Paper and Tea Dye Distress Inks. 7. Die-cut birdcage using Tim Holtz's Caged Bird Bigz die by Sizzix and ink the edges with Old Paper Distress Ink. 8. Add Kaisercraft Blush pearls along the bottom of the bird cage and adhere to card with foam dimensional tape. 9. Adhere tag with foam dimensional tape. 10. Adhere a bird from the Birdsong Script Collection by Prima. 11. Send it to a friend and make her day! Here's a detail shot of the gorgeous Prima Pebble, since the picture in the store doesn't do them justice at all! Half of the 8-pack are domed glass pebbles topped with what looks like a jewelry bead cap and a rhinestone. The other half are pebbles surrounded by a ring of bling and you wouldn't believe how much they sparkle in real life! Thanks for stopping by today!

This is in honor of my Queen for the Day friend Judy (jaydekay on SCS). Memory Box window and bird cage die cuts, Martha Stewart bird punch, Cuttlebug ef, Lovely as a Tree stamp set by SU and branch die by SU, with some Dazzling Diamonds "snow". To make the wood look of the window I used my ink pads, swiping them on the cardstock going all in the same direction. First I used Sahara Sand, then Dusty Durango, finished with Soft Suede. So easy!

Welcome to our first Wednesday Sketch Challenge of September! As the summer winds down it's always fun to get back into the craft cave and create. And man oh MAN the September release sure is filled with inspiration, don't you think? Below you'll find Sketch 244. Let's give a warm welcome to this month's MFT Challenge & Inspiration Guest Designer, Lindsay Amrhein! Lindsay is a busy mother of two boys, but somehow she manages to cram in time to create. It's one way she can relax after a busy day! Because time is a factor (and isn't it for all of us?), Lindsay tends to make uncomplicated cards with pops of color and clean and simple designs. Lindsay has been playing along with our sketch challenges since January. It's always fun to see what she has created with products from My Favorite Things! Let's look at how Lindsay interpreted her first sketch as our guest designer: Sketch 244 is a simple one which is perfect for Lindsay's uncomplicated design sense. A bold rectangle takes the place of the tag, and she used her stellar coloring skills to created a tropical scene by combining the Birds of Paradise and Polynesian Paradise stamp sets. The lovely florals not only create a spot for the bird to rest, but it also takes the place of the banner of the sketch. The Challenge Team is at it again with inspiring creations. Let's see how they interpreted Sketch 244! Alice elaborated on the sketch to creat this fun scene using the brand new London Mouse stamp set and London Skyline Die-namics. Big Ben replaces the tall aspect of the tag in the sketch while the utterly adorable mouse stands sentinel. Erin Lee sticks pretty closely to the sketch with the tag, the banner, and the rectangular panel. Her design is super glamorous with the gorgeous brand new Delicate Pretty Poppies stamp set and the Etched Flower Background stamp. Jill rocked out new stamps, Die-namics, and a stencil to create this energetic card. The Soda Pop line features all sorts of fun puns and iconic images. I love how Jill took the sketch and then angled it for this bubbly design. Miriam's stunning poppies steal the show on a crisp white banner. The contrast of the black sentiment and border frame the lovely design, and her artistic use of the Scattered Bars stencil creates a magnificent backdrop. Like Erin Lee, Vera stays pretty true to the sketch, but look how different the two cards turn out! The POWER of good sketch, don't you agree? I love how she paired the whimsical birds from the Birds of Paradise stamp set with the subtle and intricate background stamping. A very pretty juxtaposition, indeed! Veronica double layered the banner in place of the tag and inked up the brand new Fall Florals stamp set and Die-namics for this delightful autumnal bouquet.
