Sometimes I sit down to stamp and the card just comes together right away and other times I have to really work on it to get the parts to look right or play around with just the right color combination. And other days it just takes that "A-Ha!" moment and the right inspiration for it all to come together. For today's card I had a picture from a catalog of a shower curtain with different fish in shades of blue as my starting point. The fish were a bit more whimsical than the fish in Seaside Shore but I figured that I could get something to work. I started with a Whisper White panel and began sponging with my lightest color; Pool Party, then went onto Pacific Point and finally the darkest blue; Dapper Denim. Next, I moved on to stamping my fish. I did one in each of the background colors and then fussy cut them out. We get spoiled by so many sets having coordinating framelits but don't let the lack of a framelit set or punch keep you from getting a set that you like. Fussy cutting isn't hard it just takes a bit of patience and the more you do it the better you become at it. Then I sat and I sat and I sat with these pieces, moving them around, trying to imagine what some seaweed at the bottom would look like....maybe some bubbles going to the surface. Several different colors of ribbon were pulled out... But nothing was looking right to me. So I left all the pieces on my desk and moved on to something else. Then along came the Freshly Made Sketches challenge (see below for the sketch) and the lightbulb went off and the card came together quickly after adding in the squares! It just takes that one little bit of inspiration some times! I cut out 3 small squares with the Stitched Shapes framelits and adhered my fish to them with dimensionals and the arranged them like the sketch. The sentiment is embossed in white using the Thoughtful Banners stamp set. And I added a little Pool Party baker's twine bow as the final touch. So I guess the moral of the blog post is to not give up on a card even if at first it doesn't seem to be coming together. Save the pieces and take a break and I bet after some time you'll find the right inspiration to finish it off! Thanks for looking! Did you stamp today? Welcome to our September Mix-Up! Why a Mix-Up? Well, maybe it's because right now we have two fabulous catalogues to tempt us - the 2015-2016 Annual Catalogue and the Holiday Catalogue which we can order from until January 4, 2016. Because our Hops always go in a circular fashion, if you are starting here, I'm the first stop on the journey. If you joined in somewhere along the line and are working your way around, you may have come from Deb's Stamp and Create blog. I don't how she comes up with all the amazing creations she shares with us! Let's jump right in with my first project. The idea of the Free-For-All or Mix-Up is to use products from both catalogues. So my first project features the Woodland Textured Impressions Embossing Folder and the Among the Branches stamp set - which very conveniently are offered in a bundle which saves you 15%. I teamed them up with the Thankful Forest Friends stamp set which is also in the Holiday Catalogue. When I looked at the bear image, I immediately pictured him peeking out from behind one of the trees. I call this card Peek-A-Boo Bear. For products from the Annual Catalogue I used the sentiment stamps from Work of Art and punched it out with a retired punch because I didn't have any current punches that would work for this! Many apologies! Next, I had to re-visit a favourite technique. Bokeh! Because it reminds me of bubbles, I teamed it up with this very fun jellyfish stamp from the Land to Sea set from the Annual Catalogue. The inks are all blues - Night of Navy, Bermuda Bay and Pool Party. To make the jellyfish pop - they are stamped with Versa Mark ink and embossed using White Embossing Powder. For an item from the Holiday Catalogue, I chose the Softly Falling Textured Impressions Embossing Folder - again, because it can be bubbles or snowflakes! Thick Whisper White card stock is perfect for the card base. Finally, I had to go all Christmas. But, Christmas with Bokeh! This is pretty much all from the Holiday Catalogue - except for the Night of Navy, Whisper White and Thick Whisper White cardstock. The Sleigh Ride Edgelits Dies are just way too much fun! And add such a WOW factor against the Bokeh sky with silver glitter that was so, so easy to do by dabbing small dots of glue using the Fine Tip Glue Pen. Love that glue!! The 'peace' is cut from silver glimmer paper using the Christmas Greetings Thinlits Dies set. I used the same ink colour as with the jellyfish card. So I have lots of new toys to play with, which is always fun. Hope I have given you some inspiration! I know you will get a lot of inspiration from the next Hopper - Debbie. It's Tuesday and time for a new challenge at CASology. This week's cue word is WAVE. I decided to look through my embossing folders to see if I had any that would fit that theme and was surprised to find 3 of them. I stamped my starfish in different colours and paired them up with different "seaweed" looking dies. The sand stamp is an old wood mounted stamp from South Africa and is about 25 years old!! I added some white Liquid Pearls to give more dimension to the starfish. Which colour and embossing folder do you prefer? This card uses the really fun Sea of Textures stamp set and matching dies. The octopus is so cute, don't you just want to hug her? I was on pinterest getting some inspiration for a card using this bundle, and ran across one by Carolyn King. I changed some stuff and made it mine. At the time I created this card I did not have the new Balmy Blue paper and ink pad, so I made it with Marina Mist which has since retired. But it looks wonderful in Balmy Blue too. I turned this card into a shaker card and used the Tranquil Textures Sprinkles as well as some teeny tiny fish that I cut out using the die from the Under The Seas dies. We are on the Alaska Cruise right now. It's an incentive trip that I earned through Stampin' Up! We are having a wonderful time and its so great to get away with so many fellow Demonstrators from all over the world.
