As soon as I put out the call for pattern testers, I knew that there was one pattern in the mix that I would not be able to resist making for myself. And that was the Ay, Chihuahua!!!! Not only is this fun to make.... It's really fun to say! I had a reader contact me after seeing the Forest Friends quilt pattern online. And they were wondering if I could adjust the deer block to make a cute little Chihuahua block. Well.... One thing led to another. And I fell in love! After coming up with the basic doggie face, I added the bow tie. And then I thought of how fun it would be to make these boy doggies surrounding a girl doggie. For her, I transferred the bow to the top of her head and added a little collar. I was visiting at my LQS in Newton, Ontario last week and happened across the Blossom collection by Northcott Fabrics. I knew that the dotty fabric would be perfect for the background. Then I chose the green print for the binding and the boy doggie bows. And this sweet floral print for the backing. This quilt finished a little wider than the width of fabric, so I added a plain grey strip along one side. I'm telling you..... It was lined up straight when I basted, but ended up off kilter by the time the quilting was finished. Looks like I planned it that way? Just like with the Black Birds in Blue quilt I shared last week, I used a Light Grey Omni from Superior Threads, both on top and in the bobbin. Of course the quilting is organic wavy lines made using my walking foot. Zoom! Zoom! I actually pieced the mini quilt version first. For this one, I felt a bright yellow background would be a nice contrast to the blue bows and binding. I had this colourful dotty print left over from another project and used it for the backing. I added two corner tabs for hanging, before applying the binding. This was quilted using plain white Guetterman thread in tighter wavy lines. The "Ay, Chihuahua" baby quilt finished at 44" x 50" and was the 7th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels ordered from Ikaprint. The "Ay, Chihuahua" mini quilt finished at 17" x 19" and was the 8th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels ordered from Ikaprint. You can find the Ay, Chihuahua quilt pattern here! A Goldschmidt walk-off home run in the 10th inning sealed Cardinals win over the Blue Jays at Busch Stadium during inter-league play.
Birders have noticed blue jays and cardinals eating food from the same feeder. Does that mean these birds get along? Let’s find it out.

Blue Jay Meaning: This bird does not tolerate getting its feathers ruffled, and that's symbolic for you and me. Bold meanings for this bold bird.
A female cardinal in winter
Four lovely colored birds that you can print, assemble and hang. These birds are easy to assemble and can be hung from a mobile or used as an ornament or decoration. My family loves to watch the birds in our backyard, and this is a fun way to bring a piece of nature into our homes. Also comes in a color-your-own version.
8″ square finished size. The Blue Jay was introduced to The FLOCK in December 2019. It is common throughout eastern and central US and southern Canada. It has a loud, raucous call with lots of variation. The Blue Jay is easily coaxed to backyard feeders with a menu of nuts and seeds, their favorite foods.

Lithograph, or offset lithograph prints, are typically open edition prints and unsigned, unless otherwise marked. Lithograph art prints are the most affordable of Charley’s designs, but no less beautiful! Most of the lithograph designs are not available in other print formats. Charley Harper lithograph prints look great framed and make wonderful gifts!

March 2009 The Phoenix Cardinals gave all of us something to cheer about this year, but now that football season is over, you may want to go check out Arizona’s other Cardinals, the birds! Our teams’ handsome mascot, a male Northern Cardinal, is native to the state and fairly common down here in desert regions. (By contrast, the football team is not native to Arizona: the team originated in south Chicago in 1898, then migrated to St. Louis, Missouri in 1960. It wasn't until 1988 that Phoenix became the territorial center for the team.) With their jaunty mohawk, brilliant red plumage, black face and orange beak, male Cardinals are one of the easiest birds in the country to recognize. They have a vast distribution, ranging all the way from southeastern Canada to Guatemala, and stretching from Maine to the Baja Peninsula. For some reason they don't make it over the Continental Divide, so they are most common in eastern North America. They are honored as the state bird in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia. But not in Missouri (Bluebird) or Arizona (Cactus Wren). If you spot a bright red male, there is usually a female nearby. Cardinals are devoted mates and travel with each other year round. As is common in the avian world, females are not as colorful so that they are better camouflaged during nesting season. But she is quite elegant in buffy gray feathers tinged with red on the crest, tail and wings. Cardinals are also well known in the bird-watching world for the clear, melodious songs exchanged between mates or territorial rivals. At this, both males and females are equally gifted. Female cardinals tend to choose the reddest males as partners because they become the best mates and fathers, being better able to defend their territory and provide food for the family. In order to maintain their feathers' scarlet sheen, they need to feed on insects and fruits high in carotenoids during their molting period. Cardinals are common throughout their range in thickets, riparian areas and in suburban shrubs and trees. They are non-migratory, so can be seen throughout the year in good habitat. Here in Arizona they are restricted to the southern parts of the state and are most common along washes and rivers, but not so much in very dry areas of the desert. They love thick mesquite bosques that provide protective cover from predators. Bright red wolfberries are a favorite food that helps maintain the scarlet sheen of their feathers. In the Deem Hills you are most likely to see a Cardinal on the north side in the trees along the wash that runs along the base of the Hills. Occasionally a pair will establish territory in the neighborhoods, especially if there is dense natural vegetation in a nearby wash or open space. The name Cardinal actually originated from the Catholic Church when the Pope’s principle advisors were named Cardinals, which means “important” or “main.” The official robes of cardinals were dyed bright red to symbolize the blood of Christ and the idea that these bishops would die for their faith. From then on, certain shades of red have been known as “cardinal” red. Some bishops also wear pointy hats as part of their ceremonial garb. That is why European naturalists were reminded of the Roman Catholic cardinals when they first encountered these amazing red birds.
I have this post today at the Classy Cards 'n Such blog and this is my card for our current challenge using the inspiration photo below... we would love to have you join in with us! Hello Classy Friends, Diane here with you today. This week our challenge theme is Winter Birds. I have to admit, my card today is far from winter, but I just could not resist using this awesome stencil by Dreamweavers called Birds and Blossoms. I had a technique I wanted to try and this bird just kept calling to me, or should I say chirping! But, before I get to my project, I wanted to share a real winter bird. I have had about 12 Cardinals at my feeders all at one time. I love seeing their bright red feathers against the white snow! Okay, back to the project. I used a gorgeous Metallic Silver embossing paste by Dreamweavers, applying it with my Palette Knife to black card stock. Here is a photo of the image drying, it is pretty enough, you could stop right there! After the embossing paste was totally dry, I placed my stencil back over (after cleaning it of course) the embossed image, applied Perfect Medium by Ranger, then applied Perfect Pearls with a small brush using the colors Mandarin, Jubilee Blue, and Sour Apple. This same technique can be done using VersaMark and Dreamweavers Mica Powders. There are a few more steps after applying your powders, that I haven't gone into here. The design papers I used are from Glitz Felicity. I added a baby blue bow and a beautiful Ribbon Slide. The finishing touches, were adding LaCreme Pearls to some of the flower centers! Wouldn't this be a perfect card for a "birthday" to chase away those "winter blues"!! It's a Wildbird Gathering in Jerry's backyard - the cardinals, bluebirds, blue jays and other delightful feathered friends enjoy tweeting in person. A tray puzzle is made up of a board with a recessed center with a raised edge frame, plus removable puzzle pieces. This allows the durable puzzle pieces to fit into the tray creating one flat surface when completed, just like a regular jigsaw puzzle. When the puzzle pieces are removed from the board, you'll find a greyed out image as the background. This greyed out image also has definitive lines to give the puzzler two clues: the shape of the puzzle piece and the image printed on it. Originally, our tray puzzles were intended for young children, but we quickly realized that seniors enjoyed these puzzles as well, particularly those living with dementia. This is why our image selection hopefully appeals to both the young and the young at heart. For ages 3+.
