Elena Salo is back again to show us some transparent cards using the new collection Romancing The Swirl by Beeca Feeken. Elena was so inspired by this collection and she loves how you can make quick elegant cards with these dies.
This tutorial is a long time coming! About two years ago, Becca Feeken at Spellbinders came out with these great Vignette dies where you die cut different layers of a scene and put them all together with a structure that you also die cut. These things BLEW MY MIND! I couldn't wait to get some of these dies. Everyone else felt the same way. These dies sold out very quickly! By the time I got to the website with my credit card, they were gone! I had no way of making an adorable vignette that would fold up, go in an envelope, and bring not only my good wishes but "ooos" and "ahhhhhs" from the recipient. Or did I? That's when I invented this card. But unfortunately, my life was so busy at that point (sole caregiver to my mother, who has dementia) that I didn't have time to make a tutorial. But now I do, and so here we go! Because I wanted this to be a springtime card, I chose to use a base of Stampin' Up's Mint Macaroon cardstock. I cut one piece of cardstock at 11" X 5-12," and cut another piece of cardstock into four pieces, each 4-1/4" X 5-1/2". If you want to make it easy on yourself, MAKE SURE THE 4-1/4" MEASUREMENTS MATCH! Each of those four pieces should be EXACTLY the same width. Stack them on top of each other, and if they are not EXACTLY the same width, trim them so they are. I sound like someone who didn't do this earlier, don't I? Mmmmhmmmm. Score the big piece of cardstock right down the middle at 5-1/2", and score each of the smaller pieces at 1/2" on both long edges (see diagram below). Remember: When you score cardstock, fold AWAY from the indentation, not with it. I know it's counter-intuitive, but if you fold away from the indented score line on the big piece, it's going to make one of the instructions further down make sense. Michelle Wright explains it well here. I bought these dies from Poppystamps specifically to create this technique. If you do not have these dies, you can use any nesting dies you have. You can use dies that are the same size for that matter. If you don't have dies at all, you can cut a tunnel in your cardstock with a paper trimmer or scissors. Heck, it's just paper! Play around with it! Here is the same cardstock after I die cut. (Okay, some of you have noticed that there are two right-side score lines on the bottom right-hand panel. I initially scored the wrong indentation. Whoops! That's why I designated this panel to be in the back. No one will notice.) I colored directly onto the trees and branches with the brush tip of a Copic W5 marker and airbrushed with some yellow-green Copics. I used the lightest marker for what's going to be the front panel and went gradually darker. However, I don't think that was necessary because you can always change how light or dark you go by airbrushing lighter or darker. (Eventually, I end up adding more color anyway, but at this point in the process, I didn't know I was going to do that yet.) Cut a contrasting panel (mine is yellow) at 5" X 3". This is going to go at the back of the tunnel, so I used a really bright panel. Then, after placing the tree panel with the smallest opening over top of the 3X5 panel so I would know where to stamp, I stamped the word "Spring." I also smeared some glue at the bottom and covered it with Flower Soft that I found in a drawer. The flower soft did not cover completely, so I added some light green glitter as well. It's like a meadow of flowers and glitter, like in real life. Now it's time to add our first windowed panel to the inside of the card. Start with the panel with the smallest opening. Add some Score-tape (or other adhesive; your choice) to the left flap of that panel. Because you have folded your 11" X 5-1/2" cardstock against the fold indentation, you should have a ridged score line on the inside of the card. Place the panel with the tree window on the right side of that ridge. Peel the Scor-Tape liner off, make sure everything is lined up, and close the front of the card. Now, when you open the card back up, you should see something like this. Take the panel with the second smallest opening, put some Scor-Tape (or other adhesive) on the left flap, and adhere it just above the panel you just did. Keep doing that until you have all four windowed panels stuck down evenly on the inside front of your card. I forgot to take a picture of it, but adhere the 3" X 5" panel (mine is yellow) to the inside back cover so you will be able to see it through the windows. Even though I forgot to photograph that part. You are very smart and will be able to figure out exactly where it goes. At this point in this particular card, I realized that just airbrushing some green around the tree tops was not going to make this a very woodsy card, so I took some distress ink and a sea sponge and sponged leaves on the various layers. It was extremely easy to mask off each layer by simply putting a half sheet of cardstock behind the panel I was working on and another half sheet to the left of that panel. I also took the opportunity to airbrush some moss or grass on the ground under the trees. And then I die cut some deer, and a bunny, and some birds. I believe these dies are from Impression Obsession. I sponged some ink on the edges to make them look more rounded and lifelike. This is a great time to add any critters or flowers or vines or whatever to your layers. So much harder after sticking the right side of the flaps together (voice of experience). I also realized I wanted to scatter some more Flower Soft at the bottom of each layer, so I did that too. Now cut one more piece of the green cardstock at 5-1/2" X 4-1/4" and score it lengthwise at 2". I went ahead and stamped mine with a wood background. The 2" part of the panel is going to be used to hold all four of the right-hand side flaps together, and the 2-1/4" part of that panel is going to get stuck to the right-hand inside of the card. Because you are sticking flaps together, on the back of that panel, run your adhesive horizontally. I used my wide Scor-Tape for this because . . . I really don't have a lot of other uses for tape that wide, and I have a whole roll. You can absolutely use adhesive that is narrower. Open up your card completely and press all those layers down. See how they line up nice and even? That's where the 2" part of the new panel is going to go! Take your Scor-Tape liners off, and stick it all together. I glued the 2-1/4" part to the back cover first, and then--while it was all still flat--glued the 2" side down. Open the close your card to make sure it all works. If you want to take another run at it, Scor-Tape can be loosened with your heat gun and the paper very gently pried apart again. Also feel free to use your scissors to trim anything that didn't quite fit. To finish up the inside of the card, I stamped this sentiment by Penny Black to the left of the trees. And this is how the tunnel looks all put together! Magical! Here is the entire inside of the card put together. Oh yeah, I need an outside of the card too! I used this die from Eutreec that I bought really reasonably from Amazon, and a wood-grain embossing folder from Stampin' Up. Here are a couple more samples I made: This one uses regular old nesting dies, and some very old but gorgeous paper from a company I don't even think is in business anymore. I can't remember what this paper is. I made the card two years ago. I have a thing for adding butterflies wherever I can. The nesting dies used here are Spellbinders, and the butterfly and plant dies are Cheery Lynn. And this one uses Spellbinders dies from the one and only Becca Feeken! Yes, the very dies I was looking for and couldn't get at the time, came back in stock and I bought them!!! And now I can use them in the Storybook Tunnel Card! I also got to use some very beautiful paper from Graphic 45 on this one. This card is made even more special with a door. The door opens and everything. Look! Another magical world inside! A message of thanks! And thanks to all of you who hung in there all the way to the end of this very long blog post. If you have made it all the way to the end, you have to click on this link and see the VERY GORGEOUS card made by my good friend, Shelly Hickox. Shelly is a genius with Graphic 45 (with anything really--very creative that one). Now go make one of your own! Cyndi

Today I am featuring three different projects using the new 3D vignette Twin Lens Camera die set from Becca Feeken. This set can be used for both a 3D project or 5x7 cards as I have showed in my examples. The camera features pockets that hold4 different cards on which you can mount photos for a cute display and storage. I am sure you will love this whole collection.! As usual, I have listed all the products used to create these projects at the end of this post. For the first card I decided to create a fun belated birthday card. I love how the sentiments make for a fun kind of play on words. The top sentiment comes with the set and the bottom sentiment was from the Birthday Unboxing set. I used some pretty yellow and green papers along with black and brushed silver making just the front part of the camera. I then added the flower which also comes with this die set. The green enamel dots were from my stash and both sentiments were popped up onto foam squares. For the next project, I decided to create a 3D camera which I did from different black and grey colored cardstock. It really looks like a box camera! I just love how it turned out. I decided to add a pink flower to this camera with a pearl from my stash in the center. For the third and final card, I also decided to create another fun birthday card. I I used fun colorful polka dot paper for a background paper. I added some pretty blue cardstock along with more brushed silver accents. I also added several different multicolored flowers to the camera at both the top and bottom corners. I used some of the flowers from the petite floral Potpourri die set for this card to add some different sizes of blossoms. The sentiments also came from both the set and the Birthday Unboxing set and were popped up on foam squares. This camera set was so fun to play with and created some great cards and project. I hope you will check out this whole collection as there are some really cute die sets in it. And as always, you know Becca Feeken always hits a home run when she designs something! Hi there friends, Today is release day at Spellbinders! I was lucky enough to work with one of the new collections, 3D Vignettes by Becca Feeken! There's 4 die sets in this collection but I've only worked with two. I'll be honest, I was terrified at first haha! I never really create projects like these, so I thought I could just try working with two to start with! I'm happy to report that they are much easier than they look! Yes, there's a lot of teeny tiny die cuts in the sets, but there are instructions available for each set. I just followed those and I had no problems at all. I love love love the 3D projects, especially the TV! I will not go into step by step tutorials here, since I made a process video for all of today's projects - I'll just attach some photos! I'll link the video down below, if you're interested. You can also subscribe to my YouTube Channel and press the bell icon so you never miss a new video! You'll find all the supplies I've used linked in the description box of the video. Anyway, here are today's cards and projects: Here's the video (WARNING! It's super long!): That's it for today guys! I hope you love these new die sets as much as I do and I hope you won't be discouraged just because they look overwhelming. I felt the same way I swear! I'm so happy I accepted the challenge though, because it was pretty straightforward how the pieces come together and I love the final result as well! I hope I could inspire you in some small way! Thank you so much for stopping by! Have an amazing day! X

Cyndi

Hi there, this is Annie Williams and I’m so excited to have the opportunity to share a couple of projects using the new Sweet Cardlets Collection by Becca Feeken. The adorable bug and bird images and beautiful sentiments in this collection inspired me to make three loving cards perfect for nature enthusiasts or anyone who needs a smile. When I saw the beautiful bee image in the Just Bee-cause Glimmer Hot Foil Plate Set, I knew I wanted to create a big hive with a flurry of wings around it. A slimline card was the perfect format to convey that feeling. Trim a piece of white cardstock to 3.75” x 8.75”. Apply Gold Hot Foil three times across the center of the panel using the Patterned Medium Circle Foil Plate from the Christmas Essentials Glimmer Circle Hot Foil Plate Set and the Glimmer Hot Foil Machine. Die cut the center of each circle out using the Nestabilities Standard Large Circle Dies. Apply Gold Hot Foil to gold satin cardstock using the Honeycomb Foil Plate from the Just Bee-cause Glimmer Hot Foil Plate Set. Repeat two more times. Trim the foiled panels down so that they fit behind the windows of the white panel without overlapping. Apply Gold Hot Foil to both black and white cardstock using the Bee Foil Plate from the Just Bee-cause Glimmer Hot Foil Plate Set. Die cut the whole bee out of the black cardstock and just the wings out of the white cardstock using the coordinating dies. Adhere the wings on top of the bee bodies using foam adhesive. Adhere the honeycomb panels to a top-folding white card base measuring 4” x 9” with tape runner. Pop the foiled window panel up on top using foam adhesive and then adhere the bees around the windows with more foam adhesive. Foil the sentiment onto black cardstock using Gold Hot Foil, cut it out with the Angled Sentiment Die from the Shimmering Merry Christmas Sentiments Glimmer Hot Foil Plate Set, and adhere it to the card front with foam adhesive. Spellbinders Supplies: Other Supplies white cardstock, black cardstock, Tonic Studios Gold Pearl Satin Mirror Cardstock, foam adhesive, tape runner Many of my close friends and family members love ladybugs, so I wanted to make a sweet and simple card inspired by their beautiful colors. A little punch of bright green in the background makes this card perfect for sending a happy hello. Apply Black Hot Foil to white cardstock using the Background Pattern from the Lovely Ladybug Glimmer Hot Foil Plate Set and the Glimmer Hot Foil Machine. Blend Mowed Lawn and Squeezed Lemonade Distress Ink over the leaves in the background pattern with sponge daubers, concentrating the green ink in the center of the leaves and the yellow ink toward the outer edges of the leaves. Trim off any excess edges from the panel and mat it with a piece of black cardstock measuring 3.25” x 3.25”. Foil the lady bug body onto white cardstock and the wings onto red satin cardstock using Black Hot Foil. Die cut each out with the coordinating dies. Foil the sentiment from the Heartfelt Sentiments Glimmer Hot Foil Plate Set onto white cardstock using Red Hot Foil. Cut it out with the coordinating die. Die cut white cardstock with the Large and Small Square Dies from the Richelieu Square Die Set. Die cut red satin cardstock with the Large Square and Large Square Edge Inlay Die. Adhere the large white square beneath and the small white square on top of the red edged square die-cut with tape runner. Mat the stack with black cardstock measuring 4.5” x 4.5” and adhered to a top-folding white card base measuring 4.75” x 4.75” with foam adhesive. Adhere the matted background pattern panel to the card front with foam adhesive and pop the ladybug and sentiment up on top to complete the card. Spellbinders Supplies: Other supplies white cardstock, black cardstock, Tonic Studios Scarlet Organza Satin Mirror Cardstock, Mowed Lawn Distress Ink, Squeezed Lemonade Distress Ink, sponge daubers, foam adhesive, tape runner The gorgeous swan images in the Graceful Swan Glimmer Hot Foil Plate Set reminded me of a fairytale, so I wanted to use a soft color palette and iridescent foiled elements to create this magical and sweet card. Trim a piece of white cardstock to 3.75” x 5”. Apply Prism Hot Foil to the bottom portion of the panel twice using the Background Pattern from the Graceful Swan Glimmer Hot Foil Plate Set. Blend Salty Ocean and Peacock Feathers Distress Ink over the foiled area with a blending brush to look like softly rippling water. Blend Tumbled Glass Distress Ink just around the edges of the rest of the panel to give it just a bit of a feel of sky. Foil both the solid and outline swan designs using Black Hot Foil onto white cardstock and cut them out with the coordinating die. Die cut lavender and blue iridescent mirror cardstock with the Large Picot Petite Rectangle Die and adhere together with tape runner, offsetting just a bit to let the blue layer shine through. Foil the sentiment onto lavender cardstock using Prism Hot Foil and die cut it out using the Scallop Edge Banner Die from the More Sentiments Glimmer Hot Foil Plate Set. Adhere the Picot Petite Rectangle layer onto a top-folding white card base measuring 4.75” x 6” with foam adhesive. Adhere the foiled background panel to the card front using foam adhesive and pop the sentiment and swans up on top to complete the card. Spellbinders Supplies: Other supplies white cardstock, lavender cardstock, Tonic Studios Mariana Mist Iridescent Cardstock, Salty Ocean Distress Ink, Peacock Feathers Distress Ink, Tumbled Glass Distress Ink, blending brushes, foam adhesive, tape runner I hope you enjoyed this trio of sweet nature-inspired cards and thanks so much for stopping by today. Hi there friends, I have a card to share to day and it uses a technique that earlier I had promised I would share; I'm sharing the card and the technique today. When you make cards that have borders on the bottom, it's important that the border is strong enough to support the card. What I'm…

Hi there, this is Annie Williams and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share a couple of projects using the new Make A Scene Collection by Becca Feeken. The beautiful scene builder, fun kinetic card base, and gorgeous accent dies in the collection inspired me to make three cards using the elements in very different ways. I had to start out by trying my hand at one of the classic Make A Scene cards first. The Picture Perfect Window Scene die set was the first set to catch my eye and I really wanted to create the feeling of a garden at sunset. To do this, I blended color all over the main pieces of the card base and left my scene in silhouette with glints of light peaking out here or there. For a little contrast and to convey a bit of color, I used deep purple shimmer cardstock for all of the flowers in the scene. Die cut the four main panels of the kinetic card base out of white cardstock using the Make A Scene Card Base die set. Blend pink, purple, and blue ink over the different panels with a foam blending tool to create a sky at sunset. Die cut the two front scene inserts out of black cardstock using the Picture Perfect Window Scene die set. To give the window and flower box a subtle highlight, die cut them again out of silver cardstock and adhere them to the back of the black scene inserts, peaking out just a bit. Embellish the front inserts with tulips and floral stems cut from black and purple shimmer cardstock. Die cut the last scene insert (furthest back) out of white cardstock and blend the same three inks over the panel. Embellish the last panel with a sentiment cut from silver cardstock and floral vines cut from black and purple shimmer cardstock. Assemble the card base as shown in the instructions. When closed, the card base will lay flat and your recipient will have no idea what’s behind those doors (these card base dies are genius!). Die cut black cardstock with the second largest frame in the Scallop Façade Frame die set and adhere it on the front of the card base with liquid glue. Embellish the frame with flowers cut from purple shimmer cardstock. When the recipient pulls on the side tabs, the doors open and the scene assembles itself almost magically. I found myself opening and shutting it several times just to watch it work! With so many different scenes to choose from (and even mix and match), think of all of the possibilities with this fun card system! Spellbinders Supplies: Other Supplies: Heavyweight white cardstock, Gina K Designs Black Onyx cardstock, Tonic Studios Frosted Silver cardstock, purple shimmer cardstock, Picked Raspberry Distress Oxide Ink, Wilted Violet Distress Oxide Ink, Blueprint Sketch Distress Oxide Ink, foam blending tool, liquid adhesive, tape runner. The scenic dies in this collection can be used for much more than just those fun kinetic cards…any window or shaker card works perfectly with them too! Here I added a few of the scene layers over a shaker window for a pretty and feminine wedding card. Die cut light pink cardstock using the large outline and inner frame die from the Filigree Façade Frame die set. Die cut gold cardstock using the large outline, inner frame, and flourished inserts from the Filigree Façade Frame die set. Adhere it to the pink frame with liquid glue. Die cut the gazebo and couple layers out of white, gold, and pink cardstock using the Wedding Bliss Scene die set. Assemble each layer with liquid glue and embellish with tiny white and pink flowers and garland. Adhere the couple layer directly to the back of the layered frame with liquid glue. Add foam adhesive to the back of the frame and add the gazebo layer behind the couple. Trim a piece of acetate to fit behind the window and press it into the foam adhesive behind the gazebo layer. Add another layer of foam adhesive around the window. Place iridescent, clear, and gold sequins in the opening and add to a top-folding A7-sized white card base. Die cut the sentiment from the Wedding Bliss Scene die set and adhere to the front of the window with a solvent-based glue. Spellbinders Supplies: Other supplies: White cardstock, gold mirror cardstock, Stampin’ Up Pink Pirouette cardstock, Gina K Designs Bubblegum Pink cardstock, acetate or plastic packaging, clear, pink, and gold sequins, Beacon 3-in-1 Craft Glue, foam adhesive, tape runner If you don’t want to create scene cards, this collection also has some gorgeous accessory die sets! I used a couple of them and lots of intricate layers to create this soft and pretty friendship card. Create a top-folding A7-sized card base out of white cardstock by trimming it to 7” x 10” and scoring it down the center. Using the largest die from the Scallop Façade Frame die set, cut the folded card base into a scalloped card base. Place the top of the die just slightly over the folded edge of the cardstock and run it through your diecutting machine back and forth several times until both layers are cut. Die cut mint cardstock with the largest two dies in the Scallop Façade Frame die set and adhere to the card base with foam adhesive. Die cut white cardstock with the next largest frame and insert in the Scallop Façade Frame die set and layer it over blue satin mirror cardstock with liquid glue. Pop this panel up on top of the mint layer with foam adhesive. Die cut white cardstock with the smallest frame and insert in the Scallop Façade Frame die set and layer it over white cardstock with liquid glue. Pop this panel up on top of the blue flourished layer with more foam adhesive. Die cut pink and mint cardstock with the flower layer and leaf dies from the Grand Cinch and Go Flowers die set. Ink the tips of the leafy branches with green ink and the edges of the petals with pink ink. Add a touch of light orange ink to each petal to brighten them up. Shape the petals with a ball stylus, assemble the flower, and adhere to the card front with liquid glue. Foil the sentiment onto white cardstock using the Heartfelt Sentiments Hot Foil Plate Set, Cobalt Hot Foil, and the Glimmer Hot Foil Machine. Pop it up next to the flower with foam adhesive. Spellbinders Supplies: Other supplies: White cardstock, Stampin’ Up Coastal Cabana cardstock, Tonic Studios Cobalt Velour cardstock, Evergreen Bough Distress Ink, Worn Lipstick Distress Ink, Dried Marigold Distress Ink, sponge daubers, ball stylus, foam adhesive, liquid glue I hope you enjoyed these three very different card ideas using the new Make A Scene Collection by Becca Feeken.
