Today you will learn how to install a car stereo headunit system in your home. Basically what you require is a source that can provide a constant 12 volts. The best cheapest solution that works great would be to use an old unused computer power supply unit also known as a PSU. These are small metal boxes placed inside a PC case that provides power to the motherboard, HDD, disc drives, processor, graphics card and other major hardware components. This also can be used to power and install a car stereo system in your home as well. But first, you will need to modify the connections slightly with your wiring harness plug to make everything work. There are different types of PSUs that you can buy and use for this little DIY project. They come in different watts and amps. Generally, cheap or expensive 500 watt ones are more than enough as they can put enough amps down the 12 volt rail. If you use a 300 watt PSU the headunit might cut out during high volume levels when the bass hits which is not good at all. Also please also remember that you can't connect your car stereo directly into a wall outlet. The voltage will be too much and you are going to blow out and damage your radio permantely also risking yourself as well. So overall its not safe to do like described and its 100% pointless because it won't work anyway in the first place to start of with. What you will need to install a car stereo system in your house is a pair of wire cutters / strippers, insulation tape and 10 mintues free of your time. 1) Snap off all the yellow wires going into the plastic four pin molex connector. Also do exactly the same from the black wires. 2) Remove the plastic insulation from both the yellow and black wire around about 2-3 cm would be fine. Then pair them up so twist all the black wires together and also do same for the yellow wires. 3) You will also need to make the power supply think that its connected to a computer so that it boots up. The green wire will be the PS On or PS Ok wire, either way whatever they are labelled they both play the same role. What you want to do is disconnect the green wire from the atx connector and connect it to any of the black wires. You could also wire an inline switch that provides you with the ability to apply the power when you want just how the ignition on a car would act all without using a key. 4) Now the hard part is done, you need to connect the wires from the car radios wiring harness plug. Connect the yellow and red wires to the big yellow wire you have just made coming from the power supply unit. Then connect the left over black wire from the CD player to the black wires coming from the PSU. 5) Once the power connections have been both made, tape them up to prevent any cables touching each other later on and causing any fuses to blow out. 6) You can now connect your speakers to the four channels on the wiring harness. Its best to use car speakers that are rated at 4 ohms such as 6X9s for good bass and clarity, you could also use home hifi speakers they would work just as good but they will be rated usually at around 8 ohms. This means that you will not be able to push the full RMS output from the internal amplifier because the lower the electrical resistance the more power you can obtain. 7) So thats it you ready to go. So connect the three pin kettle lead into the back of the PSU. Connect the plug in a free mains wall outlet and switch it on. Also ensure that the main power switch on the back of the box is set to the on 'I' position. The car stereo will now power on in your home and the lights should come up on the front faceplate. Pop in your CD and your ready to play some beat. Now that you have your car stereo in your house connected, you can also wire a car subwoofer and amplifier to get some deep bass.
