If you are teaching NGSS Disciplinary Core Ideas PS2.A: Forces and Motion, PS2.B: Types of Interactions, PS3.A: and need an online AND hands-on distance learning/in-person 5E resource, this is perfect for you! Students watch a video about crash test dummies and car safety. They then answer questions, look up definitions, do 2 hands-on activities and a 10 question EdPuzzle. This activity should take about 45 minutes depending on the grade level of your students. This resource is also included in these bundles: Integrated NGSS Middle School Science MEGA Bundle Full Year Distance Learning Distance Learning PS2.A PS2.B NGSS Forces & Motion Growing Bundle Google Ready This resource has the following concepts: -Newton’s 1st Law -Inertia -Motion -Balanced Forces -Unbalanced Forces -Gravity Each student needs the following materials: -5 or more coins -1 Cup -Some type of card ie. 3x5 card, playing card -Flat ruler or butter knife This resource includes the following: -7 slide Google Slideshow -Key -Links to websites for definitions -Link to an EdPuzzle on Inertia This resource has the following NGSS Standards: NGSS Disciplinary Core Ides (DCI): PS2.A: Forces and Motion • The motion of an object is determined by the sum of the forces acting on it; if the total force on the object is not zero, its motion will change. The greater the mass of the object, the greater the force needed to achieve the same change in motion. For any given object, a larger force causes a larger change in motion. (MS-PS2-2) • All positions of objects and the directions of forces and motions must be described in an arbitrarily chosen reference frame and arbitrarily chosen units of size. In order to share information with other people, these choices must also be shared. (MS-PS2-2) Scientific & Engineering Practices 3.) Planning and Carrying Out An Investigation- Students conduct an investigation to produce evidence of Newton's First Law of Motion and use their understanding to create a poster displaying examples from the real world that relate to this law. Crosscutting Concepts 2.) Cause and Effect- Students conduct an investigation to determine the effect of a force applied to an object are rest. They use their observations to understand the effects of force and inertia.
