Borgward was a German automobile manufacturer founded by Carl F. W. Borgward (November 10, 1890 - July 28, 1963). The first "automobile" Carl Borgward designed was the Blitzkarren (i.e. lightning cart, a sort of tiny three-wheeled van with only two horsepower (1.5 kW), which was, in the gap in the market it filled, an enormous success. Traders with a small budget bought it for delivery. The Reichspost ordered many of them for postal service. In 1929 Borgward became the director of Hansa Lloyd AG

Before it was forced to shut its gates in 1961, Borgward employed more than 23,000 people and made one of the fastest mid-sized cars on the road, the Isabella TS. It invented the mid-sized sports sedan years before BMW did. But it hasn’t made a car since. So what happened?
Little-known in the United States, the high-quality and elite Borgward automobile was revered in Germany, where it was produced from 1929 until 1961. Henry Mohrschladt’s family hails from Bremen, where Borgwards were built, and, indeed, some of his relatives worked in the factory. Because of this connection, he acquired his first Borgward Isabella during his college years and grew to appreciate their rock-solid, superlative engineering. “The quality of construction was really equal to Mercedes-Benz at the time,” he notes, “with really high-quality castings, including an aluminum cylinder head. I’ve never known of anyone blowing a head gasket in one!”
