Hemp is a non-drug variety of the Cannabis plant with many uses. Hemp fibers can be used for clothes, hemp seeds are used in food and hemp oil can be found in soap and shampoo.
DIY Topical Cannabis (Pot) Salve I think I should start out by saying that I only endorse this if marijuana is legal in the state you live in. I suppose since I make other salves (which are awesome!), I'd eventually get to making a cannabis salve (which is also awesome!). Infusing pot salve is basically the same as all the other salves I make with one little difference. Decarboxylation. And what's nice about this is you will also have made your own CBD Oil. More on that below. How to Decarb Cannabis After you have good quality bud, trim or shake: Place the amount you will infuse on a clean cookie sheet. You will need enough, when finished infusing, to get at least 1 cup of oil for this recipe. Turn the oven to 220 degrees. After it's heated, place the cookie sheet in for about 25 to 30 minutes. Chop into fine pieces. So heating in the oven will cause the room to smell like pot. I didn't think it was as potent as I've read but there was obviously a smell. I opened windows and really didn't think it was that bad and it really didn't stick around too long. If you do want to make your own salve but don't want the smell, another option is to buy a decarboxylator but I don't know how much product these hold. Infusing the Decarboxylated Cannabis Note: Remember when infusing your herbs, and in this case pot, you don't want to use a jar where there is more than an inch of headroom between the oil level and top of jar. Put the decarbed cannabis in the glass jar. Add in a good quality extra virgin olive oil or MCT Oil or Coconut Oil (extra virgin olive oil has anti-inflammatory benefits, it moisturizes the skin, improves elasticity, and it has good fats and antioxidants to help heal the skin) and cover about 1 inch higher than plant material. See Note above. Seal with an airtight lid. Place in warm area, maybe a closet or on the pantry shelf, etc. At least every couple of days swish the jar back and forth to move the material around. At least once a week I open the jar and lightly smash the plant material. Before putting the lid back on, wipe any oil from around the edges of the jar. Let the product infuse for 4 to 6 weeks. Note: You can add other herbs to the cannabis you'll be infusing if you want. I've also added Calendula and Arnica. Straining Your Infused Cannabis/CBD Oil Yeah! Now you're ready for straining, I use a piece of doubled up cheesecloth large enough to be able to hold and wrap the plant material so you can squeeze all the liquid out into a bowl. If it looks like it might be necessary, you can strain your oil twice. Cannabis CBD Salve Recipe Butters and Oils These are some of the butters and oils that I have used in this recipe. You can do your own research as well for more information. Avocado Butter - moisturizing, softens and soothes the skin, antioxidant, healing Shea Butter – light nutty scent, moisturizing, hydrating, softens skin, healing, conditions damaged skin, and good for mature skin. Kokum Butter - moisturizing, antioxidant and antibacterial properties, softens the skin and restores skin flexibility, rejuvenate skin, anti-inflammatory, Coconut Oil - moisturizing, softens and soothes the skin, slightly oily until absorbed Apricot Kernal Oil - softens/soothes skin, anti-inflammatory, nourishing for dry and mature skin, good for sensitive skin, slightly oily until absorbed Emu Oil - anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, healing properties, essential fatty acids and vitamins, can help relieve pain Vitamin E Oil - antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, healing properties, helps dry skin Arnica Herbal Oil - anti-inflammatory, healing properties, antioxidant, can help reduce pain St. John's Wort Herbal Oil - antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, healing properties, improves skin quality Cannabis Salve Ingredients 1 cup Oils - I've typically make this with just the Cannabis Infused Oil but I've also lessened the amount of cannabis oil and added in a few teaspoons of other oils. 2 - 4 Tablespoons Beeswax Pastilles (see Note 1) 1/4 cup Butter of Choice (listed above) 12 - 18 drops Clove Essential Oil Glass containers - 1 or 2 ounce size Directions In a bowl large enough to melt your ingredients, add the oil, beeswax, butter. Fill a larger pot a little less than half way full of water and place the bowl with your ingredients inside, like a double boiler idea. Heat slowly over a medium-low to medium heat, stir occasionally until all ingredients are melted. While this is melting, get your containers ready to fill. I put an old towel down (to protect the surface from any spills) then put the containers on that. When the ingredients have been completely melted, turn the burner off and carefully remove the bowl from the hot water. Be so careful not to spill, this is hot! Use pot holders and set the bowl on a towel. I let the mixture cool a bit before adding the essential oils. I really don’t know if you have to do this but I do, I think I am getting a better sense of what my mix of essential oils will smell like when it's a bit cooler. Add the essential oils and stir well then pour in the containers and wait for them to harden before you start using it and giving it to friends and family. Notes: I always start with the least amount of beeswax. When all ingredients are melted, I take some of the mixture and put it on wax paper to cool to see what the consistency is like. From there if I want, I'll add in more beeswax. Let it melt and test again. If using glass containers, let the oil cool enough so as not to crack the glass. It will take 2 to 3 hours before it's hardened. Start with just a little bit so you know what it will be like on your skin. Making Homemade CBD Oil If your goal is to make a homemade CBD Oil, when you go to make your purchase at a dispensary, ask for something that is a high CBD strain. If you live in a state where you cannot legally purchase cannabis, look into a place where you can buy Hemp flower which is legal for purchase. You can read more on Hemp and the Farm Bill below: Industrial Hemp - National Institute of Food and Agriculture Brookings - The Farm Bill, hemp legalization and the status of CBD Making CBD Oil is the same process as infusing bud for salve. The only difference is the strain of flower you are buying. You will end up with a nice good oil. Just the oil itself can be applied to the skin and taken internally (see the disclaimer at the bottom of the website). If you are concerned about taking it internally, check with your doctor. How to Take CBD Oil Internally If taking internally, start with a few drops under the tongue and let it sit about 30 seconds before swallowing. Now I don't mind the taste but some of you may not like it (but you do get used to it) so you can put a touch of organic honey under the tongue first. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines yarn in this as a continuous strand made of natural or human-made fibers used for knitting and weaving. When it comes to understanding how yarn is made from hemp fibers, the process starts from the time of sowing the seeds - literally. Different Stages of How Yarn is Made from Hemp Fiber Pre-Spinning Stage The method of cultivating hemp for fiber use is different from the method of hemp farming for the use of its seeds, or its flowers and leaves. Seeds of hemp for fiber use are sown densely so that the plants grow tall and slender with almost no branching. These plants get harvested when they start flowering, but before the hemp seeds come. A hemp harvester is a popular machine as it separates the stalks from the top part with the leaves without damaging the stems in any way. Several steps follow the harvesting before the fibers are ready for spinning. Once the leafy part has been separated, the stalks are left in the field for retting. This process is necessary to weaken the pectin that binds the fibers to the harder woody core known as the hurd or shive. Leaving the stalks in the field gets dew, natural bacteria, and fungi to do the job in about five weeks. Some farmers also soak the stalks in water for retting while others use chemicals such as enzymes. In both dew and water retting, the stalks need to be turned from time to time to ensure uniform retting. A machine known as the decorticator is also used. The broken stems are then beaten to separate the fibers from the hurd. The technical jargon for this process is scutching. A stage of combing for further cleaning of the fibers of any hurd remnants follows. This is known as hackling. Then comes the stage of roving, which indicates twisting the fibers to improve their strength. Only then they are finally ready to be spun into yarns. The shorter fibers known as tow fibers also get separated from the long fibers known as line fibers during the process. It is possible to do all of these stages manually, but for large commercial crops - mechanical processes are more the norm today.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] The Spinning Process Spinning is the process of twisting and drawing out the fibers to make them into a smooth and continuous yarn. For hemp, spinning can either be dry or wet. Dry spinning produces coarser yarns while wet spinning leads to finer yarns. Hemp gives you bast fibers, which is why wet spinning is preferred. Typically, the line fibers are wet spun while the tow fibers are dry spun for ropes and twines, etc. Wet or dry, the twisting is necessary to produce the yarn. However, you don’t spin the hemp fibers like you would wring wet clothes. For manual spinning, a piece of simple equipment known as the spindle (picture below) is necessary. A spindle is a thin, rounded rod with tapered ends and a weight on it. It may be made of wood, metal or plastic. This is a traditional tool for spinning manually. In some cases, hemp is spun with other fibers such as silk, cotton, and flax. For manually spinning hemp fibers into yarns, a spindle about a quarter of a pound in weight would be most suitable. There is a hole somewhere near the weight, to which you need to tie the hemp fiber. Pinch some length of the fiber and turn the spindle. That will add the twist to your fibers and turn them into a continuous strand of fine yarns. Continue the process till you’ve reached the end of your fibers. A gap of about two inches per pinch is good for a really fine spin. Check that your yarn is tough enough not to be pulled apart easily. Otherwise, you need to add more twist. Also, make sure that the spindle does not roll backward, as that will get your work unwinded. Keep joining fibers by rolling the ends together with your fingers to get longer yarns. The final step in manual spinning is blocking. You need to take the yarns out of the spindle and loop them using the thumb and elbow of your less active hand as the two points. Soak the loops gently into lukewarm water and squeeze out excess water. Stretch them out or hang them to dry. Once dry, your hemp yarns are ready to be woven into fine hemp clothing.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] Mechanical Spinning Manual spinning is hardly practiced these days, except in tribal belts in many countries where they prefer continuing with their traditional methods. Manually spinning hemp fibers into yarns is also hard work. Even the mechanical spinning process is fairly long-drawn. For a fine yarn, the fibers need to go through several passages of doubling and drawing. Doubling refers to the process of combining, necessary to ensure uniform thickness of the yarn. This has to precede drawing. Drawing or drafting is the process of passing the fibers, usually called ‘silver’ in the textile industry, through a series of rollers to straighten the yarn. Each roller turns faster than the previous one. After several rounds of doubling and drawing, the fibers get attached to the roving frame for wet spinning and drying. It is customary to boil the roved fiber in caustic soda and bleach it with hydrogen peroxide for finer quality yarn. The fibers are usually put inside a drum with a tightened lid and then put into a bigger drum full of water, often operated electrically. The caustic soda and the hydrogen peroxide is added into that water. This process is known as degumming and bleaching. Then the power gets switched on for the water to boil. The fibers inside the other drum gets refined by the heat and the chemicals. The fibers then pass through a trough of warm water before being spun. In mechanical spinning. spinning bobbins perform the task of the entire spindle operation. They are nothing more than spindles that run mechanically on a spinning wheel. Spinning bobbins pinch and draw the yarn from the fibers. The yarn also gets dried in the process. The final stage is winding, which in spinning terms means packaging. It is the process of transferring the lengths of yarns properly rolled or looped from the spinning bobbins to a suitable package. The finishing stages are considerably important in determining how fine the yarn is. The natural characteristics of hemp fibers can be altered for finer yarns through facilitating efficient fluid diffusion. This is why the process of degumming and bleaching is particularly critical. The proportion of the chemicals and the boiling time can lead to differences in the quality of the yarn. These in combination with the right settings for the spinning bobbins have everything to do with how yarn is made fine and of higher quality. Traditionally, hemp yarn was used for ropes, twines, sacks, canvas for ship sails, etc. Its use was limited to items made of coarse fabrics, that is. However, with improvements in the mechanical spinning process, hemp can now be spun into fine enough yarns to produce linen-like clothing.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] Fun Fact to End With Ancient China was known as the land of silk and hemp: silk clothing for the rich and hemp clothing for the poor.
