When the unimaginable happens, it’s often difficult to know what to do or say and how to let someone know how much we care. When my friend found out that her teenage daughter had a very rare and inoperable brain tumor, I knew that I wanted her to feel the love from me since I couldn’t physically be with her. I am fortunate to have a large group of childhood friends. We’ve known each other since we were very young, and we’ve been through all stages of life together. Grade school, middle school, high school, college, weddings, having babies, parent deaths, tragedies and everything in between. But this was a first. A heartbreaking diagnosis for a child. Even though most of us have experienced cancer firsthand with a loved one, this was the first for one of our kids. And other than prayer, I felt helpless. We listened as she told us about driving hours every day to treatments and sitting with her daughter as she received hours of chemo. They were doing everything in their power to face this head-on. Their motto is #faithoverfear and they were an immediate example of not allowing cancer to take over their lives and to live each day with faith and purpose. What to Give I have always loved the Because Love beautiful and soft Big Hug Lap blanket. I’ve given it to multiple people and it immediately came to mind as something we could give her. While my friend was not undergoing cancer treatment herself, I knew it would be something special that she could keep with her during these difficult times. I sent tags to all of our childhood friends and to some of her family. I asked them to write an encouraging and loving note to her on the tag and then to send it to her individually. I sent her the blanket with my own tag and in the days and weeks to come, she received the loving messages from all of us and placed them on the blanket. How it Helps From that point on, she packed it with her every time they went to treatments. She felt our love by wrapping herself in the silky soft fabric and could read our encouraging messages any time she felt scared and alone. It was a simple and loving way to show her how much she is loved. Her daughter recently finished her last chemo treatment and we are grateful for her continued improvement in health. This painting/fundraising project was started by my three legged painting dog Kaiserin. Kaiserin lost a leg to cancer in 2018 and spent two years living an amazing life on 3 legs and inspiring those who were going through a tough time. We sold her artwork to raise money for the Tripawds Foundation. After she passed on October 2020, her 4-year old GSD brother Schultz took over to raise money for the Tripawds Kaiserin Cancer Care Package program. Kaiserin’s great niece Wilhelmina joined our family last year. This piece of work called NICE TRI was painted by Wilhelmina on Tri-Day (March 3). $20 from each painting sold goes to the Kaiserin Cancer Care Package program to help dogs just like Kaiserin.
When we find out a friend or family member has cancer, we want to help. Sometimes the needs are obvious and easy to identify. Other times, the friend or family member really doesn’t know what they need as they are slowly trying to adjust to this new “normal.” This can leave you feeling helpless! I […]
7 Ways To Love On Your Friend With Cancer Supporting a friend or loved one with cancer is something that you probably never planned for. It's hard to process, but super important to always show them that you love them no matter where they are in their diagnosis. As a 3-time cancer supporter of close friends, I try to keep a running list of ways to help and show love. After starting BECAUSE LOVE, I now get a ton of emails asking: “What do I say? What do I do?” A couple people have even said, “I want to call and find out what's going on, should I?” In the beginning, calls can be hard because you’re telling the story over and over again. A note, an email, or a physical card work a little better because they can be read anytime. In reality, if you’re asking yourself whether you should call, chances are you’re not in the inner circle of folks who can or even should. (A little truth talking here!) Just know that cancer is not about you. I have seen plenty of good people, do really great things, and when the response isn’t what they expected, they feel slighted or snubbed. PLEASE, if someone in your life has cancer, just make it about them. What they want. What they need. Even if it is constantly changing – emotions are like that. Some people want inappropriate humor, or flowers, or not flowers, or crafts, or meals with no spinach, or a bottle of wine! Here are 7 of my fave things to do when your friend has cancer: Consistently Check-in. Set up a reminder on your phone to check in with a quick hello or offer of support on a consistent basis. This is more caring and helpful than you may think! Life gets busy and we often can't see outside our own craziness. An alert on your calendar is the nice reminder to check in on your loved one! But please don't expect a text back... Just tell them you love them, and be on with your day! LOL. Be hilarious with your friend. Laughing out loud can really brighten the spirits. Maybe even watch your favorite stand-up comedian on Netflix together, or YouTube those ridiculous cat and cucumber videos! Be Proactive. Know that your friend is likely too distracted by cancer to ask for what they need. Be proactive by offering specifics, instead of saying,
Kaiserin was a 9 year old long coat german shepherd and cancer warrior who painted. She had her rear right leg amputated in august of 2018 (due to cancer) and took up painting to help raise money for fellow tripawds. After she passed, her 5 year old brother Schultz took over to continue her legacy. $20 from each painting sold will be donated to the Tripawd Foundation, an organization that helps amputee pets and their owners and sends care packages to dogs and cats battling cancer. Each painting is signed on the back with a paw print and photo of the artist. Each painting also has a unique name. This one is called BURNING BUSH.

The season of giving is officially underway. I often get questions from people who are putting together gift baskets for friends and family undergoing chemotherapy, so I thought it would be helpful to put together a list of items that are most useful, particularly if your friend or loved one is taking a type of chemo with harsh side effects (as I did five years ago.) Side effects can include hair loss, neuropathy, and altered taste, so a thoughtfully curated care package can be a true comfort.1
